Gears 2: "Five Times Bigger"

Epic's big sequel Gears of War 2, which almost cracked a grin from Tomonobu Itagaki during the Xbox spring showcase last week, is "fives times bigger" on the action front.

That's according to exceedingly efficient interviewee Cliff Bleszinski, who says that the second game shows just how much "smoother" the Unreal Engine has gotten.

"[Unreal Engine has] never stopped evolving," Cliff told CVG in San Francisco last week. "The character lighting is vastly improved, the environment is chippable and the tress get knocked down as physics objects.

"There's just so much shit going on, it's five times bigger this time. I think it shows the engines got smoother."

All sounds great, and if anyone can push the best out of the UE3 it's obviously Epic.

Only area for concern... "chippable"? So much for destructive.

edhe5840d ago

A lot of the texturing effects in the unreal engine can and are done via code effects, not binary files.

I hope Gears pushes up to about 20 hours, would be nice.

Daewoodrow5840d ago

I'm not too worried about that sentence. To me, "chippable" could also mean it chips away till there's nothing left, which is actually better than "destructible" which sounds to me like "you shoot it and it blows up", like the chairs and fruit produce you get in most games.

dan-boy5839d ago

and i will be happy!

and some different multi-player game types. gears2 should be a great sequel! the first was more than good.

CrazyMystical5839d ago

did M$ get BR?

can they fit all this into 8 gigs? (dvd9)

either they going force u guys to install a lot of stuff on ur HDD, use multiple discs, or they going to do some hardcore compression & make the game choppy like G. Bushes a$$.

Nostradamus5839d ago

He was talking about how the U3 engine has evolved. It can do alot more now with the same amount of resources.

Just because a game is 5 times bigger, doesnt mean it has to have 5 times the storage space.

Kleptic5839d ago

imo UE3 is only acceptable when Epic is at the wheel, with 2k Boston being the only exception...

and yeah, 'chippable' doesn't sound bad to me...Crysis is the only current game that really has fully destructible stuff...other games that claim it don't really live up to that (BF:BC for example)...sounds to me UE3 will be doing stuff like what was shown in KZ2, in which cement pillars break away to reveal the re-bar underneath...of which can't be destroyed...but it makes a really cool effect when someone is taking cover behind it...

in either case, chippable is better than nothing...

and Rein commented on the HDD stuff when interviewed about UT3 on the 360...he said pretty much every console UE3 game they make from here out will have an option for a ~3gig install...for both the 360 and PS3...UT3 had the option already on the PS3, and it helps tremendously...especially with texture pop-in, which it nearly gets rid of...if fanatic see how much HDD installations help with bigger games, they won't point their fingers so much most likely...

How about instead of making it 5 times bigger they make it 5 times longer. The original had good campaign gameplay but could be beaten in about 6 hours. I personally would like to see a campaign that was at least twice as long.

BubblesDAVERAGE5840d ago

Hd graphics on a last gen format.....it takes up some space

pharmd5840d ago

yeah i agree, it was phenomenal looking but terribly short... some tradeoff eh

5x0=0

zypher5840d ago (Edited 5840d ago )

completely agree. it'd be a stretch to take "5 times bigger" to mean 5 times longer (that would make the game something like 30 hours), but still i hope they manage at least a 12 hour single player campaign. lack of length was probably my only complaint with the first GOW.

thewhoopimen5840d ago

How are they going to make it longer when they're trying to pump five times the action onscreen and work with DVD space limitations? I think GeoW2 will be the same length or slightly longer than its predecessor.

Jack Meahoffer5839d ago

Sony fans need to point to a game that actually benefited from Bluray before they throw around "last gen DVD9" every two seconds.

MSG4 is supposed to be like 15 to 20 hours? Where did the 50GB go?

power of Green 5839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

Seems like all of you need to work on those comprehension skills, did any of you even read anything other than the header?.

I find it comical that PS3 fans worry about it, isn't there better things to do besides troll 360 threads?(this specific remark isn't aimed at #2 or #2.5).

6 Hours?.

theKiller5839d ago

MGS4 is 36 hours long, and around 24 hours of gameplay and the rest is cut scenes!

i think they will have to put 2 DVD's for GeOW 2, other wise expect it to be not more than 10 hours long!

zypher5839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

sorry. i'm no technology whiz, but i don't see what graphics have to do with lenght of game. while not as impressive graphically as GOW, Mass Effect used UE3 as well, and it was easily 30 hours long. Mistwalker put Lost Odyssey (which was chock full of CG cutscenes) on four dvds. if DVD limitation is the reason GOW was so short, then i'd happily settle for a 3-disc game if it meant a longer single player campaign.

as to Heavenly Sword and Uncharted, you're right. both those games were way too short as well. lack of lenght was my only complaint with those too. so whats your point?

madmike5839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

just go and play all your AAA games like haze runing at 1080p with 120fps jokers. ps ps3 games aint short cough cough

Prototype5839d ago

I agree bigger doesn't always mean longer, I want something that takes time to beat, not overnight like the first.

JBaby3435839d ago

Ninja Theory stated that Heavenly Sword was on a 25gig BR and that 10gigs of it was sound (music, effects, voices, etc.) so that leaves 15 gigs of game. Gears 1 is said to take up less than 7 gigs due to anti-piracy stuff on DVD.

My brother and I beat Gears on co-op in 4.5 hours. I beat HS in 9 hours and Uncharted in 12 hours. So yeah twice the space equals twice the length.

Not to mention that Uncharted and HS do things that not even Gears 2 appears to be doing.

P4KY B5840d ago (Edited 5840d ago )

Not 5 times longer.

It would be nice if it was both.

xhi45840d ago (Edited 5840d ago )

but i thought it was a good length, but i geuss replayability was a bit low.

lol its funny how he takes the piss out of the 360 a bit, 'saving on polys'. That's probably what the smear effect's for.

xhi45840d ago

what are you disagreeing with? beats me :S

flexbox3605839d ago

now ur at 14 disagrees and counting lol. people will disagree with anything. dont take it personal

popup5839d ago

I thought the 'saving on polys through clever artists' comment was really sound. They have obviously crafted this game on a frame-by-frame nature (much like the last) to look at it's very best all the time with no rock untextured (so to speak).

It is that level of care and attention to detail that I hope goes into polishing off every last aspect and angle on the already excellent looking Killzone2 on PS3.

Nice to know that there are devs like this out there.

Hellsvacancy5840d ago

they've had such little time 2 make it

Fishy Fingers5840d ago (Edited 5840d ago )

Most development time is spent on engine development. Obviously Epic havent had that problem as they are constantly working on the Unreal Engine.

Pain5839d ago

GoW2 is like Epic's 4th Game!!! this "gen" they had like 3 years to make GoW1 ( was a Xbox 1 game ported to 2) they been making GoW2 since they finished 1, wtf u taking il time to make?

and top it off the game dont look like a Forth Game , Gear1.UT3 ps3, UT3 xbox, Gears2 with ut3.5 and it still looks like 1st Game they made.

but u kids cant see that , and its a NO Brainer that Gears 2 will be 5 times Bigger The game is Using 5 DVDS!!!

Gam715839d ago

You clearly don't understand if you think 5x bigger means 5dvds.

You clearly don't understand how games are made and rendered.
1. thats if gow1 used the whole dvd in the fist place.

2. once the engine is on the dvd the rest of the space is taken up with the graphics, level design etc.

The engine then creates the level, charchters, etc and the graphics on the disc are reused throughout the game. Even on the almighty ps3 with its 50GB bluray. Ever come across npcs in games with exactly the same clothes. Thats the engine reusing the same sprites, graphics, character models etc.

5x more game doesn't mean 5x more space.
But a little baby like you can't see that.

psycho3605839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

NOt every game requires 5 years in development. Some platforms are easier to design for. They are called Dev friendly.

n00bPwner5839d ago

the greatest-looking game ever made is Crysis, and that's only 6 gigs fully installed.

LAY OFF THE SONY KOOLAID, DROIDS.

The Gears of War series has been a consistent deliverer of quality for Xbox, but which games are the best?

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies692d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638692d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72693d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337693d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever692d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

MadLad693d ago

3
5
2
1
4
Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds693d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.

It's brilliant but personally liked part one more. It's the only one that had a near horror movie vibe to it in parts, the atmosphere was amazing.

Also, the commercial for it was 🔥🔥🔥

https://youtu.be/wy8LRlS1SC...

Neonridr826d ago

Mad World was such a perfect song for that trailer. I loved part 1 too just because it was so fresh at the time. The series has been solid, but experiencing everything for the first time was pretty awesome.

ChasterMies826d ago

Gears of War 2 has one of the greatest campaigns of all time. Carmine, all that juice, fighting inside a giant worm, and riding monsters.

Knightofelemia827d ago

Gears 1 and 2 will always be my favorite Gears titles. The scene where Dom find his wife and then has to shoot her was an epic scene.

monkey602826d ago

I always found that scene laughably bad myself. Fantastic game though.

1 will always be my favourite. Most were great with the exception of 4 being okay and judgement being terrible.

They still have the most satisfying headshots from any multiplayer game around.

lucian229826d ago

Nah I laughed, the acting was soooooooooo bad

KicksnSnares827d ago

My favorite Gears game list
1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 1
4. Gears 4
5. Gears 5
6. Gears Judgement

Gears Of War is my favorite video game franchise. I can’t imagine how Gears 6 will look in UE5 after watching Hellblade 2 gameplay trailer

RetroCaptainSteve827d ago

Or if they remake 2 and 3 with that engine.

KicksnSnares827d ago

There is a rumored Marcus Fenix collection (Gears 2 & 3 remake) in the works at the Coalition. Hopefully, it’s true, but I doubt it.

Profchaos827d ago

For me you can't beat gears 1 the original was so fresh and revolutionary at the time.
Then basically I'd rank it 2,3,5,4 and judgement

Viljong827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

One of the reasons why i got the series x. Been fan since the first game.

myfathersbastard827d ago

Played them all recently on gamepass. Great games. But my favorites gotta be gears tactics. Don’t know why. I just had a blast with it lol

2
5
1
3
Judgement
4

Sciurus_vulgaris1169d ago

1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 5
4. Gears 1/UE
5. Gears 4
6. Gears Judgement

Atom6661169d ago

This is the correct answer.

nibblo1169d ago (Edited 1169d ago )

Close to my rankings but some differences. My rankings:

1. Gears 3
2. Gears 5
3. Gears 4
4. Judgement
5. Gears 2
6. Gears 1

People will hate on me putting Gears 2 so low but I always felt the graphics were too busy to the point of confusion and the combat/movement hadn't really improved over 1. Lot of cool ideas but execution wasn't the best as far as I'm concerned.
