Agreed. It may get close to producing visuals on that level, but the Wii is no where near capable of pumping out COD 4, Gears, Mass Effect, Killzone, or Uncharted graphics. And it won't be able to have a much stuff running on the screen like Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and Ratchet.

This engine can probably produce a watered down version of Kameo, but nothing on par with anything after 2006.

I own a 360 and had a Xbox before that. When the specs were being reported on early in the development of the new consoles, I seem to remember one of the developers saying the graphics processor in the Wii was more powerful than the one in the original Xbox. Read the article in the link, as it has some developer input. First generation 360 gamews were not that much better than Xbox games. That being the case, I believe the Wii should be able to eventually out perform the Xbox. Especially considering it was built from the ground up for games and not just off the shelf parts like the Xbox.

Ok... sure, you try to grab people's attention by saying it's on par with the 360's graphics, but then go on to say it's on par with 360 LAUNCH titles. No kidding... I don't doubt wii games will reach that point. It would be sad if they didn't. The thing is, we've all always known the Wii isn't known for it's graphics capability... but for its gameplay. I never bought a Wii expecting Mario Galaxies to be the best looking game ever made... I don't think any sane person did.

yeah I agree...saying 'as good as some first gen 360 titles' really leaves the door open to speculation...same for the PS3...that Gundam: something or other looked like a PS2 title...literally...

and the launch of the 360 had nearly EVERYONE wondering what exactly the new generation had in store...CoD 2 played great, but didn't even look as good as the game running on a weak PC at that point (which is not a dig at the 360...Gears looked better than any game made, PC or console, when it launched a year later, save for Oblivion)...PDZ had some impressive parts, but didn't come close to have the jump gamers were used to when a new generation of hardware arrives...

the multi-core development fiasco that started around that time really left devs in a bind to push the systems in any sense of the word...games simply didn't look that good back then...and most games at the launch for the 360 were still on the PS2 as the lead...which didn't help either...

I am sure the Wii will get some better looking games over time...but you can't argue with the fact that processing power wise...its an xbox...and an Xbox 8 years old right now...there is only so much you can do with that...this company hyping their engine is no different than if someone said they could 'almost' get PS3 launch title graphics out of the PS2 (which, in a way was almost accomplished with GOW 2)...depends what launch titles you are talking about...

Whilst I'm pleased to see someone pushing what the WII is capable off, they really don't do themselves any favors by trying to invite comparisons with the more tech heavy consoles.
Viewed by itself as a WII engine, the quantum 3 tech demo looks OK. Compare it with what the 360 or PS3 is doing though and it it looks decidedly last gen.

WII games are not competing with the 360, and shouldn't try to. The developers should simply make the best looking games they can on the WII and be happy with it - WII fans will be happy to get graphically better titles. Inviting comparisons they will never meet, undermines their achievements and really is not necessary.

Also they never claimed to make an engine producing PS3/360 Quality renders. its more like the rendering techs behind it(i.e normal mapping ).

But why is it impossible for the Wii to render fancy gfx? Since tech is going so fast with new tricks and what now, who says the GPU isnt capable of making good looking renders?

If the Wii is beefier or even close to being beefier than the original Xbox, then this it is indeed possible to get graphics that rival launch 360 titles, and here is why...
When the 360 first launched, of course you were able to tell the difference somewhat between alot of original xbox titles and 360's, but there was alot of complaints, even by industry folks that launch 360 games werent that much of an evolution over the original xbox 3rd generation games, and I somewhat agree. But that's only because Microsoft werent showing prerendered videos at E305' but they were actually showing games running on the 360. And as graphics get to the point they are at now, you are really starting to reach beyond realistic looking, even into hyper-realistic, so you are not going to see the graphical leaps we seen with going from NES to SNES or PS1 to PS2, at least you are not going to notice huge leaps at launches of new consoles. It will take a while to tap the system to produce games that will truly define a successor system from its predecessor. Besides, we all need to remember that the original Xbox, being on the market for only 4 years still had room to improve graphicswise, and so if the Wii is indeed beefier than the Xbox, or even close, just remember that if the Xbox reached full potential with the devs, then the lines between original xbox and the launch 360 titles would be extremely blurred, because remember, games like Chaos Theory were extremely impressive looking, as well as cut scenes at the end of Path of Neo. So yes, it is more than possible for the Wii to produce a game on par with some launch 360 games, but in the end, with Ninty's hardcore gamers alienated and already having a 360 or PS3 to satisfy that hardcore craving, do anybody really care about this game? Crysis boasted about being the king of all graphic intense games, but "inferior looking games" outsold it at a staggering rate. IMO this is another example of a dev trying to put the spotlight on themselves to promote their game.

While I agree that getting close to 360 launch quality graphics out of the Wii isn't too much of a stretch, I really don't expect anything breathtaking out of the Quantum 3 engine. The Wii is truly engineered to be a casual gaming machine.

With a single-threaded ~740Mhz CPU, and only 88MB of RAM shared between system and video, there's only going to be so much that you have the resources to do. Quantum 3 may be able to give great results in small confined environments (like racing games, fighting games, etc.), but you will have no choice other than to tone down the graphics if you want to use larger environments.

And as far as generational jumps not being as impressive as in the early days of gaming... When I see in-game graphics on par with or exceeding the graphics in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, or when sports games look just like watching a live sports event, then I'll agree with you. The current generation of consoles will not deliver this (not enough CPU horsepower or RAM, period). There is still room for improvement graphics-wise...

you do realize that GoW 2 is coming out in October, right? That leaves Epic about 5 and a half months to complete the game, more than enough time for them to build the graphics up. Why the hell are you calling it GoW 1.5, did you learn that slang at Nazi camp? Its not tapped out, not even close. The only reason MS is putting these game on a PC is because they also have a Games For Windows division, and to even run these games at their full graphical capability you need to have a $600+ rig. While I agree MS screwed up with the Arcade, so what? Sony has messed up on some things with the PS3 also.

At least MS didn't show the gameplay trailer for GoW2 using CG...like Sony did for kz2 in 2005. Also, you didn't answer my question about Bioshock...

The only reason that this might be able to come close to some first gen 360 games is cause alot of them were ports from xbox1. The wii can never be in hd, so they must be talking about people who only have standard def tvs. After playing my games in 1080i I will never go back to standard tv, cause its crap and thats all the wii can do, so therefore it aint even close to 360.

I was going to pick up a Wii for this generation, believe me, I had plans to go and line-up in front of EB Games over-night but when I took one look at the Wii's line-up, I cancelled those plans. It doesn't matter if Nintendo will announce a few third party "hardcore" games. They've tried it with Manhunt 2 and No More Heroes, they kind of floundered.People aren't buying third party games because most of the people who bought it are mis-informed and don't know much about games. Most of the people who bought it will only buy Mario games or really crappy licensed games because they don't know any better. That is why all of the crapware is on the Wii, because soccer moms are buying it for their 8 year-olds and that is why it is sad to see Nintendo waste the amount of potential that the Wii has on this "crapware." I doubt a few "hardcore" games will do anything to heal those wounds, because they just won't sell enough games. 2008 is Nintendo's last year to prove to devs that their console is capable of selling third party titles. If we have the same results as 2007, say goodbye to all those developers. Just face it, Nintendo has failed their hardcore fans this generation.

the wii has a solid lineup, its been out for a year and its already thrashed the 360 . The ps3 too but since they both came out at the same time and the ps3 is more expensive i ma willing to let them go. I don't want to bash the 360 but I may. I like all the consolesand I hvae nothing against any company I play games to have fun so graphis aren't a huge thing for me. There are few games that actually appeal to me on the 360 surprise huh. because it is over and over agains the same generic mature rated stuff. The wii is based off a powerpc architecture multiply the the given lcokspeed by 1.75 to get the clockspeed in the terms that ps2 or the original xbox had their clockspeeds expressed. you get a 1.4 ghz system from the wii with 88 mb of ram that is more than the gchad. the gpu has les ram but the gpu architecture of nintendo's systems work very differently from the conventional setup. if you compare ps2 specs to the gc you could almost make the claim that it held back the other two systems from producing great visuals, well the gc anyway. the gc outdid the ps2 quite well. the wii is anwhere between 6-7 times as powerful as the ps2. I would expct impressive games form this system. i play the wii on an Hd tv that outputs 1080p. The games look far from trash. My tv upscales them perhaps people should get a tv with a built in upscaler. Lets look at all of Nintendo's new and innovative games:

-Super Smash Bros Brawl (same as melee with an okay stage builder, crappy online, and new characters)

-Super Mario Galaxy (same game as the other 20 just with some new levels)

-Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess (a good game, but once again, just the same stuff over and over again)

-Metroid Prime 3 (a good game)

-all of the other crap that is on the Wii isn't even worth writing down.

The Wii may have thrashed the 360 in console sales, but in software...not so much. The attach rate for the Wii is like 2 games, for the PS3 it is 5 games, and for the 360 it is 7 games. People just aren't buying the Wii games and the Wii is just to weak to stay in this race for much longer. That is why Nintendo will lose this generation.

Also, the Wii graphics are still trash when compared to Bioshock and Uncharted, it doesn't matter how good of a TV your playing on.

Milking the cow is quite common with the other two consoles aas well. two god of war games in 2 years is it ?well 3 in 3 years if you count the psp. halo 3 is a huge rehash. Prettier graphics that don't push the system does nothing new whatsoever. if you call smg a rehash you must be blind. it has nothing similar to the last "20" for one there have been 3 games in the 3d era. super mario sunshine and smg have nothing in common. Super mario 64 and smg have the free roaming concept in common. the stories are similar but thats the biggest complaint. Every level in smg is brand new and not one of them has ever featured in another mario game. Super smash brothers brawl let's go there , Tekken 6 isn't it now? Street fighter 4 not including the spinf off tpyes in between. Dead or alive 4, 3 of them on one system.Pgr 4? Yeah aside from minor graphical improvements and a bigger roster what differences does it make.Nintendo's foray into the online world is fresh and that's largely because of the failure of the gc and they didn't support online even though an adapter was to come.The Loztp i can't give you because the game is different from anything you have played why do you think reviewers gave it high scores if it is the same zelda over and over again? halo is a great seller but it will never achieve the pedigree and class of zelda for a reason art and gameplay.The wii sells more software than the 360 and has done that for a few months now. Occasionally the 360 comes out on top by a bit more. The 360 has a higher attach rate which is true. The ps3 does not. the wii has a higher attach rate than the ps3. th wii may never have games that look like bioshock or uncharted but i thought that wa expected given the spec difference but you'll never have game of the caliber fo super mario galaxy on your system either. You will keep playing pretty fps after fps that do nothing new.Somehow i feel the need for something more. Thats what you call a "next generation" console, one that can output amazing physics, amazing A.I, and amazing graphics. its more fun having diarrhea than playing with my wii. i played with the wii for about 4 months on and [very] off. its a childrens system with children games period. the ps3 dominates it in every aspect but price [cant say for the 360 because i dont own it]. what people need to understand is the wii isnt selling so well because its an awesome system. its a cheap alternative to awesome systems. not everybody is a hard core gamer, so the chance to mess around with some games for so cheap is intriguing, until you get the system home and see how crappy the games really are. all and all the article is good. hopefully the upgraded graphics will make more developers make more appealing games for the wii! as for you "hard core" defenders of the wii, get a ps3 or 360 before you open your mouth. its always "i bet you dont even have a wii to compare it too", well, i bet most of you that are hard core wii defenders dont have another system to compare either. i have both to compare and unless your a child or just childishly immature the wii sucks at this point in time!!

Well, I have a PC with two 8800GTX overclocked and running on SLI, so the wii isn't a "cheap alternative", it is my console of choice.

I am afraid you are the one who is immature for not even taking into consideration the fact that there are some people who actually choose to get this system over the 360 or PS3 (like me). I mean, why would I even get one of those when my PC will spank them any day?

Clearly the wii isn't about graphics, so it is about gameplay, and it delivers. It may not have games that appeal to you (or all the other extremely wise-mature-and-experienced 14~16 year olds here), but it has many games that appeal to others. Have a look at software sales and then tell me which system is the one selling the most software (hint: it isn't the PS3).

You see, this is what I don't get. There are people out there who choose not to get a 360/PS3 because they just simply don't want to (like me). Do you honestly believe it is because of cashflow? I mean, have you had a look at your electronic store lately and seen how many of these things are sitting on the shelves collecting dust? Consider this: one of my video cards is more expensive than a PS3... just one of the TWO video cards...

I for one chose to get a dedicated Blu-Ray player for use with my TV (read: MORE EXPENSIVE) rather than a PS3 because I would rather play FPS with all the eye candy possible (anti-aliasing, anisotrophic filtering, etc, etc) and because it looked better with my sound system.

One thing I will grant you is that the PS3 comes in black and the wii doesn't. Other than that, well, there is nothing that would make me want to get one...

my psp online experience is far superior to my wii online experience, thats not next gen. my psp has graphics on par with the wii, thats not next gen. my little brother thats 10 already got sick of the wii, had it since launch and he wants games with a point and a challenge. not only do the graphics suck on the wii, but the game play experience is so simple minded and repetitive the games get old real fast. granted there are few games that may be worth playing for somebody with some substance to their brain, but the limited selection of worth while games, the limited genre selection, and the online experience, or lack there of, makes the wii fall VERY short of a next gen experience or a comparable console to the PS360 for that matter.

i will however agree with you on the pc part. the graphics can be much better than any of the 3 consoles out there. theres so many other strikes against a pc (for me), i just dont see myself ever getting into pc gaming. it all comes down to opinion, but its irritating to hear people defend the wii like its on par with the PS360. fact is, its not for all the reason i listed above plus much much more. another fact is im not that interested in defending any console to continue this particular conversation very much longer but i do respect your opinion... because you have a pc for the real gaming.

And what games on a PS3 don't? Don't tell me button mashing is better because then I will have to tell you that keyboard and mouse is better (which it is, and it is far more accurate to boot). While the online experience offered in some games in the other consoles is better than the online experience of some wii games, the same could be said when you compare their online experience with the online experience you get when you play on a PC. Have you tried playing something like UT3 with PC people using keyboard and mouse? Who do you think would end up getting 'headshots' all the time?

I played MK online and it feels like the people I am playing with are sitting with me in my living room, so what else could I ask for? Voice chat? maybe, but what if that isn't my thing? does it make it less fun? NO. Even when I play UT3, or Team Fortress online I have to turn voice chat off because some people... you just don't want to hear what they have to say.

Here is the kicker, I can play online, actually doing something like checking my email on a PC (I have two monitors). Can you do that on a console?

i dont mean world of warcraft. in every other sentence you contradict yourself. first the wii has all these compelling games then when you go on to name games that give you a challenge they are all on the pc. you mention you may not prefer voice chat, well dont use it, but to tell me its not important or that games that come out on the wii are comparable to the PS360 online experience is a joke. 99% of wii games dont have online multi-player and the ones that do are riddled with so many problems its not even worth playing. yes while you using a keyboard and mouse is more accurate, voice chat is what makes a team online. if another team can call enemies out and set up strategies you will have no chance no matter how good your aim is. you can check your email from the ps3, but why the heck would anyone want to check their email while playing a game? i have a desktop and a laptop, so i can do the same thing while playing GTA4 on ps3, but again, why would i? and id rather play on my 47" 1080p philips any day of the week than two pc monitors (ontop of that my desktop is hooked up to my 47", and i still dont prefer pc games for reasons of my own). apparently you have no experience with online games. stupid people arent good online, plain and simple. while aiming is a skill, so is knowing where to go and what to do. an idiot can have the best aim in the world but wont get anywhere online if they dont have some kind of changing strategy. people catch on to different things you do online so you need to change stuff up. while many children button mash, eye hand coordination is a learned skill and i prefer to use set combos. haha i remember when i was little my mom would play super mario broth with me from time to time. when she got into trouble or had to make a big jump she would thrust the controller with it like it was going to help mario jump. why? no eye hand coordination. nintendo took this one step further and we now have the same mario, only its on the wii and you really can thrust the controller to help mario jump, and its for the same reason, lack of eye hand coordination. I don't like voice chat because people tend to utter silliness out of their mouths... and I do find it interesting that you would consider a game like GTA4 to be challenging to your brain... interesting... Had you said something like FF, or some puzzle based game and then I would have agreed, but GTA? Really?

And why would you assume that I don't know what I am doing while playing online? Too bad that PC and PS3 gamers can't play together, it would be fun, actually no. Take that back, it would be too easy to take out console gamers that it would be like cherry picking.

Why would I read my email while gaming? Maybe some of my buddies need to access my server and need the current password (since I don't open rooms for anyone to join), maybe I might be waiting for an email from work, who knows. It's just nice to be able to do both...

Like I said, Mario Kart provided me with an experience that felt like the other people I was playing with were sitting with me in my living room. No lag, no dropped connections, it was great.

Lastly, why would I keep bringing PC to this discussion? Simple, since you try to put down the wii for not having some features offered by the other consoles, or perhaps not delivering the same experience as the other consoles, it is only natural that I remind you that the other consoles are also lacking when compared to a PC.

Here is the kicker, not only can I check my email on the wii, but I can also browse the net wirelessly. I didn't have to buy an adapter or anything, the wii detected my wireless router and after a simple setup in my router and the wii, and it all worked like a charm. I can bring the wii to any of the TVs in the house and I don't have to pull cables or anything like that. I don't own any of the other consoles, but as far as I know you either need to drag your ethernet cable around, or you need to get a wireless adapter (Please correct me if I am wrong).

So don't pick on the wii for not having all the features of the others. It never said it did, and just in case, keep in mind the simple truth:

PC > PS3, 360, wii.

we owned a 360 and sold it after 2 years of my husband playing and I ignoring it completely to buy a PS3 and a Wii.
(PS3 for the BluRay and so my husband can play his *man* games) and the Wii because I love those classic *family* games.

And Chrono Trigger (the original) was the best RPG ever made and I miss that game dearly.
(FF3,FF7,andFF8 are also EXCELLENT games!)

it looks good. not awesome, but good. compared to most Wii games it looks like a masterpiece. if you're hoping for anything on the level of 360/ps3 though, just forget it. if the graphics come close, then the ai or animation will suffer. i don't even think the wii is capable of a polygon count equal to a ps3 or 360, at least not with an entire game going on around it. to be fair though, its always hard and sometimes impossible to judge graphics on a video with low resolution, and a lower framerate than whats in the game. i hope they can push the wii past ps2/xbox, and developers start taking a little less... casually.

They are just trying to promise that good looking games will be on the Wii as well... and it should be possible to get good enough looking games. Before you make outrageously inaccurate claims, do yourself a favor and get educated. You'd be surprised at how powerful the 360 truly is.

Afterall, we are talking symmetrical three core processor, housing 3x 3.2 ghz dual threaded "PowerPC 970" equivalent cores. 9.6ghz of speed, three physical cores, two hardware threads per core. That's hardly laughable, unless you're laughing to keep yourself from shivering at its might.

Plus there's Xenos, the universal shader architecture graphics chip that allows superb flexibility in the way that devs chose to utilize vertex pixel geometry and physics processing power. Both major GPU manufacturers have gone unified, with ATI AMD's hd2xxx series being the first to hit the shelves, with dx10.1 compatibility.

360's a contender to rekon with.

PS3 and 360 will BOTH be hard watermarks to reach for the wii, though people should at least know their sh*t before they speak.

I'm guessing everyone is a moron and doesn't read everything correctly. The developers never said "OH YEA MAN, DIS SHIZZLE WILL BE LIKE, 360 TIMES 2!" They said they were aiming for 360 like visuals. Meaning they are hoping to get something that looks like a 360 game. Probably a very early 360 game, like a lesser Perfect Dark Zero.

Is it really impossible to achieve impressive visuals on Wii? I'm mean, when I say impressive, I mean impressive for s console that doesn't even support HD. Just think about Resident Evil 4. Even to this day, that game looks really good. Now, imagine a game that looks 2 - 3 times better then that. Thats what Wii can do. Wii 2X stronger then GameCube, and if GameCube could pull out something like RE4 then Wii can pull off something 2 - 3 times better then that.

Now, I'm not even gonna start counting how many times I have read that Wii could be over clocked by a firmware update to support 720p. Even people that don't care for the Wii have said that it is very possible. But it will likely not happen.
