More Info on Recording Function in PS3

The developper of Mainichi Issho posted a new entry on his blog explaining the recording function in Playstation 3.

Here is a rough translation:

"The highlight of the update was definitely the video camera (recording) function.

"This isn't a function we developped ourselves. We merely implemented what came with PS3 as a standard feature. Although it requires one SPE, it provides the ability to record on HDD without modifying the existing code too much. Wonderful! Not only that, although it depends on the recording format, the maximum resolution you can record (with one SPE) is 640*360.
For this monthly update, unfortunately, because the feature to upload movies to youtube was more important, we had limitation on resolution and bit rate."

isn't this guy basically saying its already there?...that devs can utilize a record function if they want to?...

I think this sounds really awesome...the auto-upload thing is a cool idea, but I would rather just be able to send game videos to friends though the xmb and stuff...hopefully some shooters take advantage of this...Halo 3 implementing something like this was by far the best thing that game had...

but lots of stuff would need adjusted, which makes it seem unlikely that many games will use this...for one, the file size cap is retardedly low on the PSN right now...I can't even send a decent res picture to friends through the xmb, let alone an SD video (yet you can upload it easily to a remote storage site, and they can access it)...be pretty pointless to not be able to fire stuff back and forth off your list...

cool idea though, this is stuff I can wait for...the in game messaging?...I've wanted that since 2006...

Yeah, everyone wants in game XMB, but I've been wanting screen and video capture for games and movies for ages.

Someone tell me why GTA doesn't have a directors mode. Come on R*, that would be a nice bonus for PS3 users since we all have HDD's. You could make your own mob/action movies.

here is the problem that one SPE is the one that sony should be using for in-game xmb and not this video gig, in-game communications need memory if its to be done right. and developers like insomniac and infinity ward make heavy use of these SPE's, sony has eight with one locked away for back up purposes, i mean killzone 2 and resistance 2 are bound to use these spe's. what sony needs to do is sacrifice an spe on things like in-game xmb you know to make the system better. below i listed a set of features sony should be sacrificing its spe's on if its to do that. instead of some video service i want a better experience with my system. i want an upgrade no a mere video recording service.

to be honest with you guys all i really want are a set of features that allow me to communicate with friends while in game without having to quit a game or having to play the same game to do so after this everything else is just icing on the cake.

if sony really wanted to get at MS and their service all they would really need to do is include the following set of features which are..

1.in-game custom soundtrack,
2. cross chat between friends and different games and sessions, ability to chat with friends without having to play the same games or having to do the same things.
3.voice message, beats text messaging thats for sure.
4.alert sound- for whenever you get a message.
5. massage to all- instead of having to try and retract word for word a message you want all you friends to receive this feature will be it.
6.video messaging-this is a good feature.
7. in-game friend invite,
8. in-game messaging- message or communicate with friends without having to leave or quit your session.
9. a search feature for the ps store would be great.
10. trophies of course.
11. log in time and last logged in, feature- know when a friend was last online line as well as they can know too about your status.
12. just for extras-time, date, and weather when playstation home button is pressed, weather location information is based on the information used to create a psn account via zip code.
13. flash support on web browser, and faster loading times as well.
14. ps store thumbnail cache of the hard drive for faster loading or no loading at all, even with ps store overhaul the pictures still take a while to show up on screen this has to be addressed asap.
15. continuous video playback feature- i mean you can already do this with music and photos why not with videos as well. videos and trailers play one after the other without having to do so manually.
16. auto resolution setting- hdmi component cables? no problem the ps3 does it all own its own, no need to manually go through the setting hassle.
17. no need for download installs, instead your download is both your download and your install. one process, makes it easier.
18. gamer score, gamer rank, gamer rep,- call it whatever but if a trophy system is coming than this will need to come as well. it just wouldn't make much sense without it really.
19. movies, music and tv service. its sony for crying outloud.
20. just for the sake of it- psp to ps3 connectivity, rip, copy, music and movies and demos back and forth the ps3 and psp continuously without the need of usb cable. all wireless via wifi.
21. standard headset, hdmi cable and 20dollar psn card with every unit sold.

than... you can bring home whenever you want, i mean i think with everything i listed if we were to have it than no body would really care much about home to be honest. but yeah sony gets these features tackle down and yeah we got ourselves and equivalent of xbox live in our hands. which is what i want. i may or may not have missed a feature or two but.. as long you all get my point than im happy, but yeah sony would have to get all these things down before this gen is over.

One whole SPE? Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of recording and uploading straight from the PS3 - kinda like the skate. Reel, just better - but I do hope that not every games uses this. Take Final Fantasy XIII for example, I'd rather see they squeeze everything they can out of the PS3 and use all the SPEs to the max than give me the ability to upload my strategy on a boss or something. On the other hand, that would be great for very detailed real time walkthroughs... Damn, I love the idea.

EDIT: Maybe, I don't know if thats possible, Sony can even optimize that feature so that it uses the SPE thats reserved for the OS. That way we have that great feature without a real loss.

Exactly what I mean. Walkthroughs are nice, but only as good as the descriptive skills of the writer. A video on the other hand is the next best thing after taking the controller yourself and saying "There, that's how you do it.".

I would love it if the feature is builtin the xmb, I mean programmers don't really have to worry about specifically coding for it, you can just record the video using in game xmb & upload it to youtube. Now that would be awesome:D

I use remote play with my PSeye, which is OK to view my room when I'm away. But it'd be awesome if the whole thing could be recorded (say just the previous 1 hour or so, depending on how much space you have on your HDD). Kind of like how TiVO/DVRs have a cache of the previous amount of video and you can just rewind back and see what happened. Would be pretty cool...

Yeah, but you'd have to have a HUGE hard drive (300-gig +) to even CONSIDER using the PSEye for a security cam.

The audio and video recording is fairly high-quality, and the file sizes are large.

And as of right now, I think there's a 5GB limit imposed on the PS3, as far as storage space available for recorded audio and video go.
