In many ways Popcap’s shooter feels to us like a free-to-play experience wrapped in a substantially less controversial one-time-fee wrapper. All the customisation items for characters, card-based progression and multiplayer-only framework scream to us that this at one point or another was a free-to-play title, but after Plants vs Zombies 2 caused a considerable backlash Popcap perhaps changed this game’s business model. We have no basis for that theory, but it’s one that rattled through our brains throughout our time with Garden Warfare. Ironically taking this release free-to-play could in fact be the best way to save it, by ensuring servers are populated and allowing players to progress their characters in a way that makes sense to them, either buy paying some cash or grinding out rewards.
