Review: South Park: The Stick of Truth – Politically Incorrect | DualShockers

The failures of South Park: The Stick of Truth’s predecessors were based in their inability to capture the essence of the show. The look, the feel, the writing – South Park meshes them all in a unique fidelity that is unmatched by any other comedic animation, and has never been realized in any of the games. Because of this, the game is so good that it has the power to nearly exorcise any memory that there were any other South Park games prior to its existence. Despite this, the game does not come close to perfection, or even greatness. As South Park, it is pure excellence, but as a video game, it has a tendency to fall flat on its face.

LOL Dualshockers- the shock value of low scores to attract hits. Anyone who's not a fan of the series shouldn't have reviewed this game.

FlameHawk3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

Most sites gave it a 85-90, but this review is stupid. Reviewing a game based on politics is just ridiculous. "Gaming Journalists" these days smh. Most reviewers actually like the satiriaztion of the RPG elements.

coolbeans3723d ago

@FlameHawk

"Reviewing a game based on politics is just ridiculous."

I suggest reading beyond the header to see what the reviewer's criticisms actually are. From review:

"South Park: The Stick of Truth is the tale of two games. It is a ridiculously off-the-wall black comedy that works in every way and successfully captures the tone and essence of the show. Unfortunately, it is also a satirization of the RPG genre that manages to misfire in more than one aspect in its most basic approach, and ultimately feels unfinished and in dire need of a polish."

FlameHawk3723d ago

@coolbeans, I did, all he seems to complain about are the RPG elements, but he doesn't make them sound so bad so I'm guessing politics influenced the rest of the score.

FamilyGuy3723d ago

In the Rev3 review they complained that the game doesn't explain all the aspects of the game in an easy to understand or visually pleasing manner. Instead it has "walls of text" explaining the more intricate game play functions.

When you think about it and how it makes fun of itself being and RPG... it could all be on purpose. Intentionally being stereotypical of what RPG players are use to an annoyed by.

Dualshockers with the lowest review score, far lower than the average of 8.5, I just can't click the link. LOL it's a principle, don't like that shock value hit grab in cases like this.

TransientDreamer3723d ago

@Flamehawk

So you're convinced that my "politics" influenced the score even though there's a wealth of evidence to the contrary? That makes sense.

@FamilyGuy

I don't understand. My goal should be to make sure that the score in my review is concurrent with the opinions of others? That defeats the purpose of a review - it's my take on the game and mine alone. You would know it wasn't "shock value" if you read the review.

coolbeans3723d ago

@Flamehawk

"@coolbeans, I did, all he seems to complain about are the RPG elements, but he doesn't make them sound so bad so I'm guessing politics influenced the rest of the score."

Does he need to use terms like "despicable," "gross," etc. to make them sound worse? He points out flaws which translates to a lesser score, naturally. Given how sedate he ACTUALLY acted over the politically-incorrect stuff, I don't see how you could reach that conclusion.

Furthermore, what's the problem with the reviewer not shutting out their own personal politics if they're being honest about it. I guess my blogs aren't as popular as I'd have hoped on here. :'(

Surely that creates a stronger biastowards inflated scores?

That's like saying no one who has ever watched South Park should buy the game.

hulk_bash19873723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

To each their own I guess. I on the other hand just picked up my Grand Wizard Edition and can't wait to pop it into my PS3 when I get off of work.

GundalfDeGrej3723d ago

"Why didn't they let someone who would actually like the game review it??"

Because that's not the point of reviews. Read through the review and decide for yourself if the points he bring up are worth complaining about.

CoryHG3723d ago

You going to let a guy that never reviews sports games review madden? no. the people who read these reviews are fans of the series. I'm not giving them the hits.

GundalfDeGrej3723d ago

I don't see any reason why someone who's not a fan of sports can't review a sports game. I don't like sport games so chances are that review would bring up ups and downs about the game that relates more to my taste in games.

You are free to ignore anyone who criticizes a game and instead only read the opinions of people who tells you what you want to hear if that's how you want to do it.

SoulSercher6203723d ago

The thing about someone reviewing a game from a genre they don't like is it could invite bias, and while no one is technically unbiased it still shouldn't be evident in a review.

GundalfDeGrej3723d ago

The same thing applies if the person is a huge fan of South Park. Maybe even more so. Chances are a lot of reviewers overlooked some of the problems the game might have simply because they love how well Obsidian managed to capture the South Park estetic.

They are all legitimate reviews! I bought Thief eventhough it didn't get very good reviews because some of the things people complain about is not a problem for me! Same with this review.

An everyday thing for DS is to get hits with shock titles and such. No surprise here.

Getting solid 8.5, 9.0, etc other places. I'm in.

illmatic3723d ago

Yeah a 6.5 is def trying to get hits...having played the game and reviewed it myself...it is not a 6.5

CoryHG3723d ago

same here. game is too fun. it might be simple, hell gamespot gave a 7.0. i gave a 5/5, the entire experience outweighs anything else. If you're not a south park fan, you will look down on this game.

carlingtat3723d ago

Maybe it is trying to get hits and maybe it isnt but you're not helping by drawing attention to it

TransientDreamer3723d ago

@Illmatic

That's your opinion, which you're entitled to. I'm also entitled to mine. I'm also not obligated to make sure my opinion is the same as everyone else's. That's not the point of a review.

TheSaint3723d ago

There are always lower reviews for good games, opinions are like A-holes, everyone has one.

WeAreLegion3723d ago

Oddly enough, some people do not have A-holes.

TheSaint3721d ago

People just like to disagree don't take it personally, and also that's not a good thing to read early in the morning!

DarkLord10033723d ago

If you don't like the show there is Zero Chance you'll like the game. Trust me - if you're a fan of the show - BUY IT!!

We are going to see a lot of crap South Park products since they sold out to paramount years ago. It's their IP they can sell out, of course; it just means the quality of their show has tanked and other products as well. Nevertheless, they put on excellent musicals, but those haven't been sold to a mega corporation.

cammers199546d ago

They said awhile ago that Ubisoft holds contract rights to the main flagship South Park games. So like stick, fractured and phone destroyer.

Snow Day was handled by THQ and Question and is a random spinoff. Hopefully Ubisoft is cooking something.

anast45d ago

That's one reason to be hopeful, but Ubi is trending down too.

chicken_in_the_corn45d ago

Loved the RPGs but never played the others. Have to track them down. Still not sure about Snow Day though.

The 7 Best South Park Games

The South Park series has somehow managed to stay relevant for over 25 years, but which are the best games based on the TV show?

cammers1995152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

The only two worth playing are Stick of truth and fractured but whole. The rest were garbage except snow day which I can't say anything about yet. But with that said, unlike stick and fractured which debuted as AAA full priced titles by ubisoft, snow day is a new developer and publisher and has a budget price at only $30 soooo
