Titanfall Beta Review: Good but still missing ‘it’. ( Raptgamersunited)

Titanfall has been one of the most hyped Xbox one games for some time now and going by the looks of the beta version, It certainly lives up to some of that hype although it leaves a lot to be desired.

8 would be a score you give to an 'amazing' or must buy game...

I would definitely hope that any games getting an 8 would have 'it'.

8 is damn near perfect after all.

Insomnia_843736d ago (Edited 3736d ago )

The game is fun and an 8 seems like it fits the game but I would give it a 7 for the lack of a single player campaign considering it's $60 and that there is absolutely nothing next-gen about the game.

kingdip903736d ago

I am not knocking the game at all just to be clear just the 1-10 scoring method and what it has become.

5 is average and anything above that is a good game, if the reviewer genuinely believes the game is lacking then the score should reflect the reviewers opinion... He has a full scale to utilize.

But as always with reviews people seem to use the 7-10 scale 7 being average and 10 being awesome and anything below 7 needs to be used to insult a game for glaring flaws...

It's sad that reviewers have come to this...

kingdip90, I've been saying this for years, it's why I have more respect for those that use the 1-5 star method. 5=Great 4=Good 3=Average 2=Mediocre 1=Poor. So much simpler.

JsonHenry3736d ago

The "it" they refer to would be 12-16 more human players per match.

Jeedai Infidel3736d ago

If you played the alpha or beta, you would know how crappy that would be. I put in 100 matches between alpha and beta with player cap in mind, and never felt like Respawn was wrong in their decision to go 6v6. If they make larger maps, I could see this happening the way Halo does it, but how it is as of now seems the right balance to those that have played it.

JsonHenry3735d ago

To each their own. I thought it was a let down and feels empty even with all the bots.

I did play the beta, and yes it would be better with more players.

Maybe it was more pronounced and noticed since in the beta I tended to play hard point the most, but with three points and only six opposing players, and some of them have Titans, often times you are just running to a hard point, capturing it, running to the next one...while you're capturing it, someone from the other team is taking a different one, and you go around and around in circles capping points like a dog chasing its tail.

Think about it, with 6 players and 3 control points and some outside in the mechs, you simply can't have many real people guarding points, at almost any given time one and sometimes two of them are unprotected.

So while all this happens in every FPS game, 6v6 matches, where people in mechs aren't usually capping points, there tends to be quite a bit more of it going on.

I actually expect it to get worse since as the beta moved on, more and more people were going to the tops of the 2-3 story buildings and sitting up there.

So roofs+distraction of playing mechs+ 6v6 means lots of unguarded hard points.

So I get that given the size of the maps and sight lines more then 6v6 mechs might be too chaotic, the flip side is the pilot level is quite barren.

This also does play into why the AI is so frustrating. Because it's barren you get antsy looking for something to shoot, and there's the AI. Sometimes you start shooting before recognizing they're bots, other times you shoot because you haven't seen anyone in a while.

So I don't know why they didn't fix this unbalanced nature of crowded mechs and barren wasteland for pilots.

It wouldn't of been hard. All they needed to do was up the player count but limit the number of mechs that could be called in at any given time.

Limit each team to having 6 mechs, but let them have 8 or 10 players on each team.

Just like Battlefield, you don't need the same amount of players in each type of game.

Last Titan Standing, okay 6v6 makes sense.

Rather then using a strict 6v6 across all gametypes, they should have used what was appropriate for each type.

There's fun aspects to the game, and a lot about it that leaves much to be desired.

Maps aren't vertical. People playing on 2 and 3 story rooftops has been done in MOST games. So no, the game isn't vertical.

Mechs don't hover. This actually a big thing.

I kept hearing about the vertical levels and the scale difference between pilots and mechs and both just are nothing like advertised.

The wall running, isn't wall running but Mirror's edge parkour. You're not running up walls.

It doesn't make much sense why they didn't allow the mechs to hover around and build bigger buildings so people are 10-20-30 stories higher and lower then each other.

Not missing it at all, the game is a multiplayer masterpiece!!!

SynestheticRoar3735d ago

Stop with all the hype. It's a ok game. I'm getting the PC version, but when it's on sale.

Sgcrapmostank3734d ago

I loved the game personally I would like to see more real players but with that comes more titans so either they should make titans longer to get or maybe put a limit to the number of titans thatt each team can have at the same time. Others than that id be fine with the way it is.

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g616d ago (Edited 615d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way
I used to be obsessed with FPS games

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad896d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal895d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
