Microsoft April NPD Results

wii topped it self, and wii fit hasn't arrived in yet...Microsoft and Ps3 + Gta isn't hardware selling...I reckon, Microsoft won't have too much to worry with the ps3 come mgs...More people were waiting for GTA then MGS, I'm pretty sure. of course, MGS is platform exlusive, so we shall see...at most it'll sell 300,000, not the 700,000 selling that wii is doing.... of course there is that small matter of people thinking, or I've got wii, now I need a hd console, Gta + MGS, could swing a lot of people...

The PS3 sold 900 less units this month, so I guess it was a "bit low" for both sides.

Either way, it's extremely close, but if Sony wants to beat Microsoft in NA, they can't have "extremely close" numbers. The PS3 needs to dominate the 360 month after month in order to close the significant gap.

because it was only reflected for five days when the measurement was being made by NPD. so the MAY numbers should be a good indication of GTA4 affected both the PS3 and the 360. But it's low for both systems. Wasn't there any high-profile game during april (not counting GTA since it was on the 29th when it was released)

3 year old is not that old at all. I am hoping this new system every 5 years thing stops. It is unnecessary to have a new one every 5 years and I will not be buying a new one for a long time to come. Especially since the HD erra has a long way to go to catch up with everyone. I mean the PS2 is still outselling the PS3 and 360. That should tell you something.

Interesting GTA4 numbers -

Almost 2 of every 3 copies of GTA4 sold (1.85 out of 2.85 million) were for the 360.

However, that also means only 1 out of every 5 360 owners bought GTA4, while 1 in every 4 PS3 owners bought GTA4. So, while the 360 version nearly outsold the PS3 version 2 to 1, the PS3 version had the higher attach rate.

I'm very curious what May's numbers will show.

Funny thing about that is, that gives both sides the ability to slant their PR in their favor.

MS: "We sold more"
Sony: "We sold more per console"

I'm curious to see if May's numbers are higher for hardware. Sony said that GTA4 was pushing consoles. A friend of mine bought a PS3 for GTA recently in may. I would assume this would be similar for MS as well. Considering the game launched at the end of April, I would imagine that any real ability to see hardware gains would come in the month of May.

Attach rate is meaningless - especially when so many 360's are out there. It is not a 1 game system. GTA will sell millions, but millions of other people couldn't care less about it. The PS3 version will have a higher attach rate because the PS3 doesn't have the same amount of quality, highly rated games that the 360 has at the moment. There is simply less to choose from on PS3.

The 40GB PS3 is having several problems: the BluRay diode is dying quickly and the cooling is not so good.

They had to cut 200 Euro/Dollar on the launch PS3 and used cheaper parts.

Really sad it went from a good build model to a cheap one that breaks down a lot. At least the 360 did it the other way around, and has gone to 3 years full warranty, with returning a 360 within 10 days instead of Sony working on a repair for months.

All that BS about "attach rates", "more games", "reaching 10m units first", "leading market share" that Microsoft likes to spin doesn't fool anyone. Lets break-down your "facts":

-Thats because the 360 experience involves paying for features, services and add-ons you get free with the competition, not to mention the disturbing number of 360 owners who've had to buy multiple units. By the way, just asking, but does that tally include the RRoD warranty losses?

GTAIV is one of those games that will steadily increase hardware sales over time. Remember, with GTA now having online multiplayer, this game will have long legs, not to mention downloadable content aside from exclusive episodes. So guys, please, let's not jump the gun, because when you steadily build your games library and make it more diverse, people will eventually take notice when they're thumbing through all of the game titles somewhere at Best Buy or Gamestop.

Hmmm... where are all those "Microsoft is getting desperate" articles refering to GTA IV prior to release talking about how GTA was a Sony game & would easily outsell Microsoft something like 3-1 ???

GTA was pretty successful for both companies, but it's gotta bother Sony that Micro could take a 'Playstation game' & not only outsell them, but run the game on puny dvd9 AND without *requiring* A HDD download.
