Thief devs: We had to dumb the AI down

Earlier builds of upcoming Thief originally had AI that was so intelligent the engineers had to dumb it down so that players stood a chance.

Yeah right, my guess is you had to tone it down to accommodate older consoles, like Lukas below me said "why couldn't they have included those super difficult AI in the higher difficulties" Metro included Ranger Mode, Thief could of done the same

This is horrible news

GarrusVakarian3725d ago (Edited 3725d ago )

I hate it when devs water down games for wider appeal, why couldn't they have included those super difficult AI in the higher difficulties of the game and dumbed them down for the easier difficulties? That way they could still appeal to a wider audience AND keep the "hardcore" happy too. Sigh.

jackanderson19853725d ago

future DLC maybe? this day and age wouldn't be surprised.... hopefully they patch it in at a later date

styferion3725d ago

yeah, why couldn't they just include the option to AI difficulties.

But the way I see the article maybe they meant that the super difficult AI is so smart to the point no one can get through at all, not just to the point you have to repeat hundreds of time to get it right...

Well we have to see for ourselves, if the hardest difficulty proves to be insanely hard, that means the original AI is just downright impossible to beat.

Palitera3725d ago

Don't worry, it is just another lie. Anyone has seen in the gameplay footages that the AI is dumb as a rat. The players stands in a room, circling the enemy and this one stands there, doing nothing, because that is what he is programmed to do: be a dummy.

Sorry, but ultra scripted enemies are not 'super intelligent AI'.

Lie.

YellowTempes3725d ago

Don't worry bro, the replayability of Thief stands in the fact that you can increase the difficulty of the game after you finish it once and then do so again until you actually finish the game on the highest difficulty (which should be NEVER!!!) :)

ThichQuangDuck3724d ago

I considered and still am cancelling my preorder on this quote. AI is why I play stealth games so the fact that they dumbed it down even with the added bonus of modifiers is disapointing. The AI does seem pretty dumb the typical oh must have been the wind AI patterns.

CAN I JUST HAVE CHAOS THEORY 2

to put the so-call "hard AI" pn harder difficulties seems like making too much sense for most devs these days! they be like: "intelligent AI? nah...scrap it! we can't have too many good things about our game now, do we?"

ninjahunter3724d ago

Ai is not particularly intensive, even the AI from killzone 2 was ported to the vita with only a slight nerf to their perception. On the other hand, its very easy to create AI that will completely wreck the player.

WickedLester3724d ago

Agreed and I'm growing to hate cross-generational titles more and more! Take a look at Metal Gear V Ground Zeroes. It looks good but it's not ground breaking or anything. Certainly not like other titles like The Order 1886 or Quantum Break. Usually Metal Gear sets new standards for graphics on new hardware. Now the next gen version of this game doesn't look all THAT different from the previous gen version. I wish devs would cut this cross generational development shit out!

Vote with your wallet, only buy what is great and pirate the rest.

It's like Ubisoft, always pirate, never buy.

That's why high budget gaming is going full casual because of publishers aiming for mainstream appeal

Qrphe3725d ago

That's exactly the reason sadly.

MadLad3725d ago

If so, you could have just introduced said "intelligent" AI in the higher difficulty levels.
It was already there, right?

I call bunk.

DigitalAnalog3725d ago

Indeed. What's even more insane is that they allow disabling specific aspects of the game to restrict your playthrough is considered the more relative option.

Ridiculous. I've yet to see really good AI since F.E.A.R and the fact that these hacks claim they can excel in that department is laughable to say the least.

Chapter113725d ago

Judging from the gameplay videos they went too far.

heisenberguk3725d ago

LAME excuse! That's why games have always had DIFFICULTY LEVELS!!

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin278d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno277d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

isarai277d ago

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin277d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter278d ago (Edited 278d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno278d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

monkey602278d ago

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave278d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Rutaprkl277d ago

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
