Thief 1080p on PS4, 900p on Xbox One

Thief outputs at a native 1080p resolution on PlayStation 4 and a native 900p resolution on Xbox One, Square Enix has confirmed to Eurogamer.

Both versions run at 30 frames per second.

Thief is the latest multiplatform next-generation game to perform best on PS4, following in the footsteps of the likes of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts. This week Kojima Productions confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes would output on PS4 at 1080p and on Xbox One at 720p.

I think the difference could possibly be more than just resolution, because I have heard that the PS4 version will basically be locked out to 30FPS as it has an excess of performance, while the Xbox One version reaches 900p, but has a less consistent framerate.

You may not notice something like that in a video but you may very well when playing them.

It was always silly for developers to pussy foot around the truth. The extra positivity generated for the PS4 version will help the game sell more and potentially sell more PS4s, which ALSO increases the sales of the game. Those people with an X1 are still likely to buy the game anyway.

Oh, and the PC gets more games than any other platform. The vast majority of multiplatform games are available on PC. Sure, it misses out on a few here and there, but the same goes for every platform. There are lots of multiplats that the PS3 missed out on for example.

This article is "specifically" comparing the 2 "console" (XONE & PS4) versions of the game.

I myself have a pretty high end PC gaming rig and I never respond about how my PC is the definitive platform for multiplat games since it would be off topic. I only built it because I thought the last generation was getting a little long in the tooth but I just couldn't get back into PC gaming.

I just prefer console gaming to PC gaming as does most of my friends that game. We all use to be big into PC gaming but not anymore. We are into more plug and play and it's just less expensive for guys like me that usually want the latest I greatest.

My current rig was built nearly 2 years ago and I barely touch it. I use to love PC gaming but now I just wanna get in and get out. Console gaming is just so much easier and less hassles.

For multiplats this generation I think it's a no brainer the PS4 will be the "console" of choice for most gamers.

I don't think Kojima really cared. I mean most Japanese studios are going to support Sony and Nintendo over the XBO anyway, simply because of sales in their country, so if any developer was going to show the difference without concern it would have been a Japanese company with no real ties to MS.

1080p vs 900p shows the PS4 is more powerful, but it's not the end of the world. 1080p vs 720p and framerate issues are a serious problem though.

MS needs to cut price ASAP, because their hardware isn't worth it for gaming purposes, and most people buying console right now are core gamers.

I thought the same thing, I've never played a Thief game before. But on X1 the other day there was about a 10 minute Thief video that had a walk through and it looked really really good. My friend watched it and preordered it. Not sure if the PS4 has the video on PSN but def check it out. One of the better preview videos I've watched. I'm still on the fence though. Might wait for a used copy to try it out instead of dishing out $65.

@chrissx I was surprised that your statement superior multi-platforms games being on PS4 got so many disagrees.

At this moment in time all the multi platform titles have had their publishers confirm they have better graphics fidelity on PS4, but some people are so loyal to a brand that they put their fingers in their ears and want to pretend it isn't true!
It doesn't mean the Xbone is a bad console, down the line it might have loads of great exclusives including Halo 2 Anniversary. All this resolution/fps issue means is it won't be the flagship platform for multi plats.

I love this all of a sudden console gamers care about this stuff. I can't remember having one convo last gen about these things. Because no one cared. All people seemed to care about was how well a game ran. And 1080p native vs up scaled doesn't change how a game runs. If a game RUNS better on one get that version. If they both run the same get which ever controller you like better. Man I miss arguments about which controller is better. We console gamers have turned into the PC master race only caring about things that never mattered before (we know they didn't matter before since ppl bought a $600 ps3, and I never read one comment using the word native.). The problem is well never have consoles that can do what their PC's can, yet some act like they bought a $4000 gaming rig for 4-5 hundred. I think all the resolution talk is because 2 systems were released together (week apart). Both are next generation. Everything is 1080p today. X1 costs $100 more yet 1080p is a struggle right now. The cheaper, more powerful PS4 is doing 1080p on virtually everything. Does the X1 not running 1080p bother me? Not at all.

Personally, both system should be running in 1080p. If one can, the other should too. But MS messed up a little. Now, I've seen screenshots of BF4 on PS4 and X1 and the difference is minimal, to me at least. PS4 compared to X360, gigantic difference, night and day. Even Thief in 900p still looks gorgeous. I think eventually developers will get the X1 to 1080p. Games always look better later in a systems life.

But at the end of the day, gameplay is what matters. Ryse for example, beautiful game but gameplay was repetitive and not very good. Review scores generally low to middle. Dead Rising 3, not bad visually but a lot of fun to play. Review scores generally high. Titanfall, heck thats in what, 720 or something like that but the gameplay is great and it's fun, the game is going to sell excellently.

Gameplay > graphics, any day

Well it's good for me to know. I have the x1 and ps4. If the game is already great why not get the superior version. I have a 55 inch 1080p led tv and I want to take advantage of it. i wasn't worried about it last gen because it was tough to achieve those goals. Now it should be the standard considering the significant increase in power.

on pc 1080p @60fps was a long time ago, and a lot of pc gamers are aiming for much higher res. so expecting them to preform on par with pcs is a losing battle before the consoles even launched. games are not going to be 60fps because console gamers want gfx effect at this high resolution, and frame rate takes a hit by doing this.

everyone seem to be focused on resolution and the benefits and how it determine how much of a leap it is over other res, but when a person say 1080p has been done and its not a big as a deal to be raging over, people bash him while ignoring the fact that a lot of gamers are playing games at resolutions and frame rate way higher than this. not say you are one of them, but people on this site only use info for their benefit.

why are you trying to imply that resolutions don't matter? 1080p vs 900p that's a cold hard fact over there and what you think more important is the argument of "which controller is better" ? that will forever stays subjective as it really comes down to preference and it differs from one person to another.

sure both version runs good at their respective resolution, but why settle for less when you can get more for the game at the same price? you might wanna say, "why not get it on pc, then?" sure you might get the game cheaper on pc but you can't trade it in too which is why many still prefer console gaming.

the same goes for 60fps and over. it's almost always preferred to get 1080p 60fps but if you even have the slightest idea of how graphic processing works, you would know that higher fps toll the GPU way harder than higher res and for the more demanding games this gen, both consoles are expected to settle with 30fps but the PS4 has shown that it can handle 1080p way better than its direct competitor, the Xbone and I'm fine with that!

Actually, this type of stuff was common place last gen. With the release of every UE3 game came the inevitable comparisons that actually REQUIRED a DF analysis. You had multiple sites running comparison videos showcasing the minor superiority of the 360 whether it be games running at 720p vs the 690p on PS3, or how many blades of grass are missing from the PS3 version.

The only difference now is that the shoe is on the other foot and not in a trivial way....and the X1 will never surpass the PS4 on performance like the PS3 did the X360.

You people are ignorant. 900p over 1080 doesn't make a huge difference unless you're using a TV made for 1080p. Most TVs have both 720p - 1080p resolutions and even then, once they reach the 40" or higher size, the image doesn't look great at a higher resolution. I own a Xbox One and I prefer it over the PS4 because I can do quite a lot more with it. If you own a PS4, great. Play the games you like and be happy. This whole issue about DPI is stupid and needs to stop

To be completely honest - 900p upscaled to 1080p on the XB1 looks real good on my 46 inch Sony Bravia. Its every bit as crisp as some other 1080p games I play on my PS4. The cold hard facts are that MS finally got the sdks out and this 8% power bump BUT these games were already to far in to utilize either and they are what they are. Going forward I think unless its a real graphic intense game that even the PS4 is running at 900p then the XB1 should be able to output 1080p. The PS4 is just better for 1080p because of the type of RAM and the better GPU. Also it is easier to work with and I think developers dont like having to do extra coding to get the esram to work properly especially if the PS4 is the lead platform and they are having to port the code over to X1. Once the method of using the tiled resources to run 6gb of textures thru the 32 mb esram is utilized properly with the sdks (which we hope will work) then I cant see a reason why they shouldnt be able to do it. There have been multiple articles on how to do this for the developers but it does require more work and coding. The PS3 was a beast but it took more time and work to get more out of it - same for XB1. It is a very powerful machine and is based off a cpu/gpu tandem for getting the graphics to really shine whereas the PS4 can run everything thru its insane GPU. This will be like this for a while like I said until devs get a better grip on the new sdks and optimize things. However, the PS4 will continue to excel and literally blow us away with its graphics capabilities. Glad I have both but I know the PS4 is superior for resolution. XB1 is a beast in its own right and the online is amazing. Both are awesome and anyone who has either or both is lucky to be able to enjoy the great games headed our way.

I'm shocked so many people suggest theres little difference in resolutions? The difference is immediately obvious for me. I don't watch tv at sub 1080p, so I want next gen games at that resolution at least!
No question that gameplay and great art design matter more - but all else being equal, I certainly notice and appreciate 1080 output.

When PC gamers were playing games at 1080p and beyond, console gamers were playing games at 720p and below. And supposedly none of that mattered. The advantages of the PC were downplayed to death.

Also, why is nobody talking about frame-rate anymore? For a while after the consoles came out console fanboys were talking a lot about frame-rate since they believed the PS4 would be pushing 60fps in many games, but now that people are realizing that most games on the XB1 AND the PS4 are going to be 30fps, suddenly frame-rate doesn't seem to matter anymore.

Chill bro - I've been playing pc games since dos too, but play that on monitors. Nice to have 1080 on my tv. I was a digital artist for 16 years and maybe thats why it looks obvious to me, I'm genuinely suprised if its not obvious to everyone, and I accept entirely those that state they can hardly notice.

I agree that higher resolutions are noticeable and if I have the choice I will always prefer a higher resolution over a lower.

However, if a game like The Order 1886 is only available at 1920 x 800 or whatever it isn't going to stop me from enjoying the game.

I just wish some people were a little more consistent and didn't constantly move the goal posts around.

I can't wait to play this game, I've always loved the series, one of my favorites. It's not that big of a difference graphically...the whole resolution war has proven to be a joke over and over...you can hardly ever tell a difference. It only matters to fanboys that jumped on the bandwagon being drug by the one trick pony that has been beaten to death. Truth is, the difference is so minimal it's laughable, there are MANY MANY MANY more aspects to gaming that are much more important.
