Do over enthusiastic fans have a negative impact on games?

The internet has helped fans find communities of like-minded gamers and given them a wider forum to express their opinions about a series. Could this be a bad thing?

There's a very distinct line between enthusiasm and fanaticism (over enthusiasm). Enthusiasm being supportive and fanaticism being suppressive, the latter is detrimental to creativity.

I think I need to specify that I'm referring to enthusiastic fans such as the Dark Souls community, for example, who want to show devs that there is demand for "hardcore" and not-so-accessible games. I think that even if these things can alienate the average gamer, there's nothing wrong with promoting and encouraging your personal preferences in games.

I wasn't talking about any kind of console-war-related stuff like Titanfall bashing or MGS bashing, because this isn't really about not liking a series; it's about not liking a console.

Yeah there are some real fanatics. I just got a PM from a Titanfall fan calling me a faggot for thinking that games with good graphics can also have good gameplay. Any interest I had in this game was completely destroyed by this jackass fan.

The loud fanboys are the ones who prove to have enough conviction to their likes and dislikes that they'll yell and vocally assault people online in the name of their console of choice In contrast, the quieter, more introverted gamers are usually the ones who have less conviction to a certain side, giving them the ability to actually understand an alternative view.

I see that alot of times they're anticipating a release saying "omg its going to be awesome/epic, blah blah blah" then after it comes out, they say things like "it was an overrated piece of trash" after theyve played it and the hype has died down.

I think people that become to involved in it are the cancer. I want to enjoy it again like I used to. People are angry about the stupidest things.
And angry nerds that think they're smarter than you will make you feel like garbage for having a slight preference over another.
