Players have to swipe, or tap, on the touch screen while Saro, the games main character, runs, flips, throws shurikens and decapitates foes to the beat of a soundtrack reminiscent of hip-hop’s renaissance. Rhythm games are coupled to their soundtracks, and if I can steal an excerpt from the Married With Children theme song, “…you can’t have one without the other.” Hip Hop Berserker synchronizes its soundtrack with the appropriate swipes, which allows players to establish a necessary rhythm with the song that is playing — if that sounds like something any game considering itself a rhythm game shouldn’t get wrong, go look at Kickbeat."

Gray, the brains behind Hip Hop Berserker, to talk about Black people in the video game industry, hip-hop, and dealing with the App Store. First, I have to start with the absurd way E.A. and I crossed paths. It was after several nights of me going through a major portion of the IGF candidates, which consisted of searching through staff pages in hopes of finding one, just one, Black video game developer. Regretfully, my labor was fruitless and I did what most people do nowadays when frustrated, I bitched on Twitter. And as you may have guessed, this yielded some results. While I was only able to find a few black game developers through the powers of social media, beggars can not be choosers."
