It's about having content that draws my attention and right now Wii U doesn't..The price of the hardware/being cheaper means nothing to me if the console doesn't provide anything that i'm interested in.

The interesting thing is that the WiiU itself is very appealing and has a lot of great games on it and killer games coming to it in the form of X, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Brothers Melee, etc.

The problem with the WiiU isn't software, although the lack of 3rd party content is annoying, but the real problem is the price tag. At $300 Nintendo has priced themselves out of the market. Why buy a WiiU for $300 when you can get a much more powerful cutting edge console at $400, that also has a lot of buzz around it.

If Nintendo wants to compete the WiiU has to be $200 or $250 with software selling for $20 to $40. When Nintendo makes the WiiU into an impulse buy it will sell well very easily, until then gamers are asking themselves why buy a WiiU when you can pay a little bit more and get a PS4 at $400? I want to see Nintendo succeed because I like the way they approach the console space and Iwata has done a solid job of getting software for the WiiU out and the upcoming titles are must buys. The problem is the price of the WiiU, they simply are going to have an extremely tough time selling the WiiU at $300.

wonderfulmonkeyman3785d ago

Because the difference of a hundred bucks is actually more than that, if you want off-TV play for that PS4.
And even without that, an extra 100 bucks is another game at purchase, or an extra controller, on top of whatever else the bundle comes with.

Plus, any further price cuts and Nintendo might start suffering the same kind of astronomical profit losses that the PS3 caused to Sony, even if it DID start getting the system into houses.

It took Sony till 2011! to make any profit from the PS3.

Think about that and realize that further price cuts are detrimental in the long run, which matters more than short-term gain.

stragomccloud3785d ago

Why wouldn't they?

Well, for all of the reasons already outlined by "wonderfulmonkeyman." ;

BosSSyndrome3785d ago

Fair enough, that's your own opinion and preference. But personally, I am very interested in the games it provides/will provide, and I certainly think that playing their cards right can definitely attract more people, despite everything the Wii U might lack. Basically I'm saying that no one can say for sure that it has no hope.

Majin-vegeta3785d ago (Edited 3785d ago )

People aren't gonna buy something it it doesn't grab their attention.I'm considering getting one for when X comes out but other than that nothing currently shouts at me.That the WII U is a must have.

Edit:Looks like NYC beat me to it :P

cleft53785d ago

I will buy a WiiU for X, but that is probably around December if not early 2015. I want to play Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Mario Kart 8, Shin Megami x Fire Emblem, etc, but I am not willing to jumping in right now until X comes out. If the WiiU was $200 or $250 with cheaper software, I would buy a WiiU right now and be happy with waiting for X to come out.

BosSSyndrome3785d ago

X is coming out much sooner than that, plus it was confirmed for 2014.

SoulSercher6203785d ago

When the heavy hitters come out for Wii U I'll consider it. Right now there's just nothing that pulls me towards it. Hopefully Nintendo's got some release date announcements coming soon.

Yep3785d ago

Right now, Wii U is leading the pack in terms of amount of quality content, that's never really been an issue for them, but the fact that this content is only now just coming is the reason why they've been bleeding.

Can't market what you don't have.

cleft53785d ago

I would argue that you can market what you don't have if you have an established reputation that people believe. I brought a PS4 based on what is coming to it more than what it has out right now. The reason I did that was because at $400 why not jump into a next-gen console. Nintendo's problem is that they aren't being aggressive enough with their price tag. They have good games out right now and the promise of even better games, but at $300 how do you justify that purchase when you can buy a PS4 for $400.

Yep3785d ago (Edited 3785d ago )

How do you justify that purchase when you can buy a PS4 for $400?

You can't play some of the highest rated games of the year on PS4. Wii U is also $100 cheaper with 1-2 free games. PS4 and Xbox One aren't really threats to Wii U in this regard. The problem is that games just now started coming out for Wii U when they should have back in 2012 and early 2013. This goes back to what I was saying by you can't market what you don't have.

Sony had games to market. The difference is that nobody really buys a PS4 for first party games like they do for Nintendo systems. In 2013, they had third party support, but very little first party support. This looking change in 2014 with already 7 original exclusives hitting the system.

still thinking of getting a wii u just because of zelda and mario......
but with all the news about failing im gonna hold on to another price change.
Zelda and mario is those games you can buy a console for and be happy about it.
bayonetta 2 is coming and others aswell. its looking good in 2014 IMO.

Nintendo Is A Bad Company, But We Can't Help Loving Them Anyway

TG: “Most of us also grew up with Nintendo, likely forming a nostalgic connection with games that have long been crowned as our personal favourites. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was an experience that shaped my view on open world fantasy, and Super Mario 64 changed my life like it did for millions of others. These titles have earned their place in history, and remain loved to this day for so many worthwhile reasons. We replay them and beg for remasters all while delving into their worlds time and time again because they mean that much to us. It’s a shame then that the company behind them often kicks its own sweet darlings to the curb.”

I never got the love for Nintendo games personally. The annoying vocalizations and ugly character designs do nothing for me.

Another very weird article.

Nintendo is a great company by almost all possible normal measures. The biggest one being: their own staff is happy, and they seem to be very happy, well compensated and retain rate is solid. They are also financially very stable, profitable, and cash rich, so shareholders love them.

Overall it is an extremely creative group of people, and their mission statement is fantastic as well "to put smiles on the faces of everyone we touch. We do so by creating new surprises for people across the world to enjoy together." The social impact is also massive, not to speak culturally. Additionally, they have a really strong core business, high customer retention rate and loyalty. Nintendo's reputation is extremely good, I think in the US alone they are 9th most reputable company, their customer service is better than the average company. Plus, the press gives them a pass, because they are Nintendo. But there's a reason why they do that, it's not "because they are Nintendo", there are more layers to the argument.

Then, then there's the random negative gamers online...and their "reputation" which is inside their heads. And their western ideas of how a Japanese company should behave or what they should do. But they have no right to ask a company to do anything for them, because they can vote with their wallets.

There's a small vocal community online who dislikes Nintendo for what they are, but then again, there's always a small vocal community that dislikes something.

Nintendo also disagrees with the Western world about IP, but most people call Westerners "hidoi!" when they emulate Tears of the Kingdom and do not experience it the way Nintendo wanted them (even if it is not the best visual way), because it is a matter of principle to them (Japanese are very much against anything close to plagiarism, and there are laws that are tight about creative works copying etc.)

The Western Braveheart "freedoom!" shouters need to understand that it is not an American company, nor they need to behave like one. They can have their own fights based on their principles (against emulation). And they very well may lose the battle with that and change, or find a new audience.

In the end, it is so very simple. Don't buy the products if you don't like a company, but there's no need to paint a picture that is unrealistic about Nintendo either.

MadLad367d ago

I hate virtually everything about their business practices, actually. Suing everybody for virtually anything, shooting down fan projects, games they never let devalue, their online infrastructure and how they handle BC.

They're lucky they make great games, because that's the only thing I feel they do right.

gold_drake366d ago

my issue with them, is the complete refusal to have decent tech for us.

and their odd censorship and lawsuits for modders.
