XBox One: Microsoft's 3 Million Units Sold Is More Impressive Than It Appears

When Microsoft announced they had sold 3 millions units after the holidays everyone was impressed until Sony dwarf the number by announcing they had sold 4.2 million consoles. 1.2 million is a lot of units moved. But there are a few factors making this console war more of a distance race then a sprint.

The Xbox One is available in every store I go to. The PS4 is out of stock and there are some regions where it was released that haven't seen a PS4 supply shipment in almost a month!!

Then we have Gamestop's "we have more than 2 million people waiting for PS4" and that's in the US only.

By the end of the year, the gap between PS4 and XBone will be HUGE! XBone will be left in the dust.

vishmarx3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

i have no clue why so many people would buy an xb1 ,but if the 3 mill sales is in fact true...
its beyond my expectations...
higher price
inferior hardware on paper.optimizations etc take their time.i would never bank on something like this just coz 360 had better multiplats last gen.were yet to see stuff. so the better thing on paper is the obvious choice this early imho.
and the bad reputation MS made for themselves prior to the launch.
im puzzled.
but congrats to MS nonetheless but im sticking to the ps4.especially after seeing what the 360 is like rnow compared to the ps3 .
one has no reason to keep a 360.and only an idiot would sell a ps3 atm.so much stuff incoming.especially from japan

n4rc3784d ago

But so many of the pros for ps4 are all based on last gen.. Why can't x1 rely on last gens success?

And no.. Its not shipped, they clearly said sold to customers..

And finally.. Care to share one shred of proof that sales are dipping?

This is what always pisses me off about n4g.. People wrap 3-4 bs opinions in with a single fact and act like your denying the fact if you don't believe the rest of the made up crap

fanboybeatdown3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

@ Mike

no, that's not correct, it's not shipped. It's sold to consumers.

Good article, the xbo is $100 more expensive and available in only 13 countries. that makes 3m+ sold all the more impressive.

"The trouble the Xbox One is going to have is catching up to Sony's momentum in the territories they have yet to enter."

I got news for you Mr. Adam Marcus, they need to catch up to sony in the territories that they both launched in first before they even think about the ones they haven't launched in as yet. Or have you conveniently forgotten sony is leading in the USA and UK and practically every other territory Microsoft is in?

georgeenoob3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

@Insomnia

Typical Sony fans hyping up sales figures, and then looking stupid when actual results are shown with your 4:1, 16:1 blind fanboyism predictions.

PS4 is barely selling Xbox in a single territory and sold 1 million more globally because it's available in triple more territories. And I love how you all are forgetting it's $100 cheaper, keep trying.

Utalkin2me3784d ago Show
AngelicIceDiamond3784d ago

The sales are impressive because of all the extreme backlash MS got last year. With all that backlash they'd be lucky to hit 500K preorders last summer.

The Xbox brand was faltering quick it seemed. Then several months later that winter they sold 3M units. A huge turn around.

That's why its impressive.

AsimLeonheart3784d ago (Edited 3783d ago )

Does everybody remember when the PS4 sold 1 million in 24 hours in the US while Xbone sold 1 million in 24 hours worldwide? At that time Xbone fans swatted away the fact that Xbone was being sold in 13 countries and continued to claim equal sales. Now all of a sudden the number of countries matters since the Xbone is behind. Man, the hypocrisy!
Most of those 40+ countries that PS4 has launched in, have very small markets that translate into only thousands of consoles sold. Besides they were Sony territories to begin with; that is why MS did not bother with launching in them for now. Do you Xbone fans really expect Xbone to suddenly sell a million more when it launches in Poland or South Africa or Austria or Hungary? Even if it does sell a million in all those territories, the PS4 is still destined to sell more than the Xbone because it has Japan all to itself.

mikeslemonade3784d ago

Haha do I need to keep education the X1 fans..??

For the last time it is shipped. The company doesn't know how many is actually sold once the retailer buys it. For example.. nintendo shipped 3.06m units in 2 months but they sold around 1.5 mil because people weren't buying them. And for this scenario the X1's are staying on shelves while the PS4s are getting sold out.

"And finally.. Care to share one shred of proof that sales are dipping?"

No.. I'm not wasting my time trying to educate you guys. Y'all should be able to learn. But I can show one more time..

http://www.vgchartz.com/too...

So when you look at the chart X1 is at its lowest while PS4 has not reached its lowest.

Owned..

ITPython3784d ago

I think the main reason XB1's are selling at all, is because there is no PS4's around and soccer moms have no idea which one is better when buying a new console for little Timmy. They are simply duped by the stores sales people into buying a XB1 because they don't know any better and there is no PS4's around to compete.

I've been in multiple stores where there was piles of XB1's laying on the floor (but PS4 sold out), and I witnessed the salesmen making their pitch to the naive mom about how awesome the console is. *shudders*

XB1 sales are undoubtedly a result of the limited PS4 availability, and I don't think I could live in a world where people voluntarily buy an XB1 over a PS4. Makes me queasy just trying to imagine it. And I'm pretty sure M$ is actually buying their own consoles and reselling them to pad the numbers.

If there was unlimited numbers of both, the XB1 would barely be breaking 1.5m and the PS4 would be well over 10m.

Skip_Bayless3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

You know what.. You X1 fans can keep thinking it's 3 million shipped and I'm gonna let the sales speak for themselves. Don't come running to me asking me why the sales are dipping.

Because the truth is the boxes that have been "shipped" in the previous order have not been sold yet.

Does Microsoft acutually know many X1s have been sold at a specific retailer. No? But as a customer it is reported that there are X1s on shelves in way more quantity than PS4s on the shelves.

You guys can choose to believe what you want but when the sales come, the truth of the matter is the PS4 is going to outsell the X1 by 2:1 by the end of the generation.

Prime1573784d ago

I just hate That those same people still hate Sony for their security breach, yet buy x1 after ms wanted to control their consumer rights.

Hate both or none.

MarkusMcNugen3784d ago

lol. mikeslemonade pulled out a vgchartz link. As if those are accurate numbers.

Retailers dont release sold units statistics to the public. Only the manufacturing company would have access to those types of stats, if they even do.

badboy7763784d ago

Microsoft has xbox one marketing and Ads with

McDonald's
NFL
Doritos

the List goes on..........

So these sales are underwhelming.

Skip_Bayless3784d ago

^Mark

Now you're learning.. Sony shipped 4.2 and nearly sold them all and Microsoft shipped 3 mil and there's still a good amount of them on shelves.

fanboybeatdown3783d ago (Edited 3783d ago )

lol @ mike!

"The company doesn't know how many is actually sold once the retailer buys it."

How on earth would YOU know what the company knows? You actually have no idea how the companies track consumer sales, yet you state your own ignorance as fact?

It is entirely possible to know how many units have been sold by a simple process known as computerised inventory management.
As retailers sell stuff, their computer systems automatically place new orders from suppliers for new stock. So at any one time, companies absolutely know how much has been sold at retail.

It's not hard to do at all. Computerised inventory systems make it possible.

No wonder other people are calling you out, Mike. You haven't got a clue, have you? You even used a VGchartz link to prove a point. FAIL.

medman3783d ago

I really don't believe anything Microsoft says and I certainly don't believe their sales figures. I'll wait to see the if the npd mid january confirms the numbers.

avengers19783783d ago

@fanboy the article you linked says according to MS. No actual sales data is shown. Just because it's an article in forbes doesn't mean they weren't just reporting what they were told by MS.

As for the 3 million sold I'm sure it's close to that, but as I have never had any problems finding them in stores in northwest ohio I'm sure MS is reporting shipped not sold... As they always have.

FamilyGuy3783d ago

These are definitely shipped numbers, sold to the retailers themselves. MS stuffed the retail supply and that's why they are so easy to find. At the same time, and as a way of PROVING this statement, we will all see a steep decline in X1 sales because retailers won't be buying more till they sell off the abundance of stocked X1s that they already have.

Going to a store and seeing a completely packed X1 case and 0 PS4s available says something. One is still truly in high demand while the other has filled its launch interest. There is no "millions of" X1 pre-orders waiting to be fulfilled like with the PS4. People who want and X1 and can afford to buy one have all bought them already. Only the people still saving up are waiting.

Gozer3783d ago

There is plenty to love about the X1. You live in a bubble if you go by the shitty gaming media into believing that some how the X1 isn't a fine product. I doubt even half of them even own an X1. There are people outside of the gaming media, people outside the gaming media that own X1s and are enjoying them. 3 million for a device that costs $500 isn't bad at all. Especially when you factor in the size difference of the launch countries.

Gozer3783d ago

MS announced they have 3 million X1s sold and you sony fanboys want to twist that into a bad thing. If sony announced they had 4.2 million sold, you guys take it as the gospel without question. You guys aren't as clever as you think. You guys aren't hard to figure out.You are trapped in a N4G bubble.

FamilyGuy3783d ago

We're "trapped in a bubble" yey you're the ones not going to the stores and seeing X1s line the game cases like the rest of us. PS4s being scarce if not completely unavailable. 3 million, sold or shipped, is not "bad", no one is claiming that X1 sales are bad, no one is claiming that X1s are "bad" either. They just aren't selling as fast as PS4s, that it. One has filled demand and is leveling out, the other is still in high demand.

I don't know about Sony, but Microsoft has always given the numbers of units sold TO RETAILERS, not consumers.

dcj05243784d ago

Don't most companies do that?

Triella3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

Both companies give the "sold to retailers" figure, the difference is that MS has been known in the past to do channel stuffing and to lease warehouses to store "sold" stock to a subsidiary company which would then resell it to distributors when needed (check the windows Vista debacle).

But even without resorting to these kind of tricks, you can tell that MS has no way near sold the 3m they claim. 3.2m is what they have been able to manufacture by end of December, but surely part of it was not shipped by then (around 300k), and there were probably like 400k XBO still sitting on the shelves worldwide by that time. That would give a real sell-through of 2.5m.

The same goes for Sony claim of 4.2m sold, even if in reality, like for MS, this figure reflects all they have been able to produce by December 31st, including 400k PS4 that were not shipped. We can logically assume that part of the unshipped PS4 were retained to honor part of japanese preorders which have to be considered as sold-through (150k) and because there are very little PS4 on the shelves (maybe around 100k-200k worldwide), we can also assume that the real sale-through was instead of 3.8m.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3784d ago

Who cares if the Xbox One is in every store you go in Insomnia 84. Doesn't matter how many are in store. Sold numbers and the data they gave is a fact. No matter how many consoles are still in store. That only proves they made a buttload of consoles and were ready for next gen demand of their console.

This bit of crying from Sony fans about seeing the X1 in stores is tiring. Who cares if you see them in stores. That doesn't stop the factual numbers that were stated.

JeffGUNZ3783d ago

How do you have one bubble? When I see them in stores I think, "good to see they are keeping up with demand". Both are easily obtainable in the US now, every store I go in has a few consoles at least. Sony fans tend to leave out the fact that the X1 launched in less territories, thus having more consoles for the territories they actually launched in.

Who needs logic though on www.psn4g.com

Saigon3783d ago

You are saying who care, but the problem is that the facts speak for themselves. I am not saying it is false, its just that the numbers do not add up. That is the problem most people are having. As a gamer I like competition especially with consoles, it keeps the industry thriving but I don't want false or should I say padded information just to make your company look good. be honest. If its 2.5, its 2.5 and 500K are in the supply channel which equals the 3 mil. Don't say 3 mil and state supply constraints.

Concertoine3784d ago

The fact that it's available isn't the point... it's that the sales are pretty good. And they are, for a console that's significantly more expensive than the competition. I think the sales will drop off pretty soon but not enough to question the future of the system like people did (and still do) with the wii u.

MultiConsoleGamer3784d ago

PS4 is only out of stock because Sony isn't shipping units. The demand is there but not the supply.

They haven't shipped to most US retailers since the 23rd of Dec.

Xbox One will continue to grow proving three things: the higher price doesn't matter, the specs don't matter, and the opinions of fanboys on the Internet don't matter AT ALL.

Seriously, after e3 certain fan groups wanted to literally hate this product to death. And guess what? All that hate did nothing but pollute their own meaningless, pathetic lives with bad karma,

Fanboys, people in the outside world really don't care what you think. At all.

headblackman3783d ago

and you think that means that the system is not selling? why is it that the Playstation fanboys always wanna believe the worst about a system that they know nothing about and have no intentions of purchasing? you being able to find a console could also mean that Microsoft aren't spread as thin as Sony and they are able to make many more units than Sony. have you ever thought about that one? for some odd reason here in the military town that i live in, neither of the systems can be found anywhere, but Microsoft stocks their console a lot faster than Sony can, so my logic sounds more accurate than the Playstation fanboys. they Xbox one is selling very well and you're able to find them in stores because Microsoft has taken production precautions so that demand can be met. all i have to say is 3 million units with the higher price point and less territories. I'm sure you all know what this means when the games start to roll out and the system gets all of the necessary updates to make the ui Xbox 360 perfect and beyond. there is tons of potential and promise in both consoles, but there is loads more in the Xbox one, because Playstation was designed to be just a games machine and that's basically it and the Xbox one was designed to be an entertainment machine which just so happens to do gaming extremely well. the xb1 can do it all and more than capable to do it on par with the best of any of it's competition. but the sales gap wont close until Microsoft starts to show hard core gamers why they should want it, casuals why they should want it, and entertainment junkies why they should want it. so promotion is key and getting the system to every place in every country as soon as possible. the people are still unclear about the direction of the company also, so a few commercials showing the games and they system functions while each different one touching base on all of the policy changes along with there commitment to satisfy the hardest of gamer, the softest of casual, and the techiest of tech geek/entertainment buff. this will turn it around!

I can't help but think that if we were talking about the XB1 leading over the PS4, nevermind that the numbers are good on both sides, we'd be seeing articles about how Sony needs to get out of gaming.

@Insomnia_84:
And don't forget Japan, where PS4 pre-order are selling out as new stock is announced. Meanwhile the XB1 doesn't even seem to be on their radar.

Noobz13784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

What I notice is how many members on this site seem to not enjoy anything positive towards the X1 or more accurately Microsoft. So what we end up with are a very determined vocal group that constantly display pessimistic views in relation to the system and the company behind it.

cleft53784d ago

Microsoft did that too themselves. Most of the people on this site was heavily devoted to their 360 and would smack talk the PS3 all over the place for a very long time. Than things changed and Microsoft completely drop the ball. If anything the negative talk against Microsoft is proof that people on this site aren't blindly devoted to praising one company over another. All of the negativity directed at Microsoft is deserved. Lets not forget the whole DRM crap and their general attitude towards their consumers.

H0RSE3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

"Microsoft did that too themselves."

BS....MS's initial policy reveal may have included less than favorable or even outright horrible features, but many acted as if MS intentionally did what they did with the intent to piss people off. MS didn't do it to themselves - people chose to be and stay angry, and to a large degree, many of them were mad at something they didn't even fully understand.

MS may have been out of tune with their reveal (really out of tune,) but they did appear genuine. There goal was not to deliberately and intentionally reveal something they knew the community was going to hate, and despite how much people may have hated what they proposed, it did have its merits.

Unfortunately, the community made sure to kill it before it even had a chance to become a reality - who knows what it could have become. It could have been a disaster, but it could have been something great.

To show such disdain towards them for this to the point that many have, is similar to hating someone because you don't agree with their opinion. MS didn't do this to themselves. People saw what they wanted to see, even to the point of refusing to see it any other way, and then just went with it. Furthermore, choosing to not support MS anymore, is not an explanation for wanting to "rain on MS's parade" every single time something remotely positive is mentioned about them - that's just being immature.

Imalwaysright3784d ago

@H0RSE Do you expect us to believe that MS didn't make market research before coming up with their idiotic policies? Every company does that and I mean EVERY company. Also the reactions to Orth comments, which btw got him fired, was a dead giveaway of where most consumers stood. MS had EVERY oportunity to flip the switch but they got arrogant and the result was a monumental bending over.

H0RSE3784d ago

You're missing my point...

As I said, regardless how absolute shit their policies were, many acted like they are/were convinced that MS intentionally did what they did with the intent to piss people off - like pissing people off was their agenda. Many took things far too personal, even to the point where they appear to not be happy unless MS is failing, even if it doesn't even concern them.

TO be angered with a company's behavior and choose not to support them, is one thing. But to continually shit on them at every chance you get, is quite another. It's like the difference between breaking up with someone yet still remaining civil, and calling them names every time you walk past them.

Saigon3783d ago

@H0RSE

Sorry that makes no sense why would they intentionally try to piss people off. Their intent wasn't trying to piss people off the outcome pissed people off and the responses afterwards pissed people off. People on this board and across the internet are not taking what MS did as it was an intent. I sure didn't. Again, it was the outcome.

MS tried to do something that no other gaming platform company has done; they were trying to change how games were managed for a console. As @Imalwaysright stated, they did their research and felt that they could implement these new policies. No one knew the Fans and Gamers would react the way they did. At the time I initially heard of the DRM, I thought oh, MS is trying to pull what PC games currently do (for the non pirated). I thought nothing wrong with it until, I read into the facts. It was confusing and none of the executives nor websites could give an accurate description of how this was going to work.

I initially wanted an XBO. I changed my mind because I didn't like the mess it was currently in especially what Kinect was bringing to the table. MS has a lot of kinks to work out, and until then I will hold off on purchasing that system.

Sony are a big company they will hold there own your a gamer nothing else I'am not having a go but relax , chill talk about future games that is a much better proposal don't you think .

Godmars2903783d ago

What are you even talking about? The 7th console generation has only been about numbers. Numbers, how much BS developers and publishers can get away with, and brand loyalty.

Things have literally gotten to the point, like a game or not, you cannot ask critical question about it without being branded a troll or hater. A situation made only worse as many with more voice than a game forum usually have an agenda. Be it payola, knowing devs/pubs and not wanting to get on their bad side or just being a fanboy.

If Sony or MS were making games which people honestly liked rather than had to settle for much console drama wouldn't exist. But because they don't, because they rely more on design commites and surveys rather than raw ideas backed by talent, at the mere mention of title fanboys are all too willing to form ranks defending or attacking something which has a poor chance of actually being good because its been rushed to market.

mhunterjr3784d ago

I don't think the 3million sales is more impressive that it appears. They are actually right on pace with what most analysts predicted since launch.

What's impressive is that despite the fact that MS is exactly meeting expectations, Sony fanboys continue to cling onto the idea that MS is underperforming.

Sony doing FANTASTIC =/= MS is doing poorly.

DanielGearSolid3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

Sony Fanboys Say X1 is "underperforming"?

OR

Sony fanboys say Ps4 is performing better than X1?

Big difference

mhunterjr3784d ago

There IS a big difference. The latter statement is undeniably true. It doesn't take a fanboy on either side to recognize that. Unfortunately, the former statement makes up the majority of what we see around here.

The playstation 4 is actually exceeding expectations. It's quite impressive to watch. But for some reason people translate that to Xbox One sales being poor... That simply isn't the case.

DanielGearSolid3784d ago

Mhunterjr

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree...

In my opinion the majority of Sony fans are crediting Sony's better performance to it being a better product overall

For them to say the X1 is underperforming would be insinuating they believe the X1's sales dont match the quality of the product. And we all know, Sony fans don't think that highly of the X1.

To put it simply, Sony fans believe the the better product has the better sales

MS will stuff a retailer full of x1's,to them its is a sale but 3 million is not all customer sales.
The ps4 on the other hand is no were to be found at gamestop and the next shipment is in feb.

That was facetiousness, by the way. I come in peace... mostly.

Good-Smurf3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

Is this next shipment applied to all Gamestop Nationwide?
If that true then I can count out Gamestop and looking on other stores for PS4 It's getting desperate man people are really hungry for PS4!
X1 is readily available prettty much everywhere and that's good if someone want to buy it but the price's really pushing it,can't see myself buy a technically inferior product for $100 more.
But yeah I think the reason why (IF) 3 million people bought Xbone was either they misinformed, they're fanboys, spoiled rich people, and some that said "Because I can" and minorities who truly get it because of its "All in One" appeal.
Hell I might get Xbone one day too but at this price no way and my living room is too small to make Kinect any useful and that's another reason why Xbone will have a very hard time take off in Japan just considering their houses are easily 2 times smaller than my house Kinect is going to be at its best act as webcam there and that's it.

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

This perhaps shows they are not expecting big things from Xbox as a separate entity

Abear214d ago

Seems like they are planning to win next gen. All the acquisitions were this generation and nobody except Xbox fans expect games from the acquisitions any time soon.

I’m sure Microsoft can afford to lose money on the short term, pretty sure they do risk assessment when acquiring many companies and spending billions, they’ll be fine lol.

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit5d ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

PRIMORDUS5d ago

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

ChasterMies5d ago

The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor5d ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff21835d ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit5d ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal5d ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

PRIMORDUS5d ago

Yup, and it's only going to keep spreading.

Outside_ofthe_Box5d ago

Phil Spencer's words always comes back to bite him lol

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

Relientk777d ago

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE7d ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware7307d ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor6d ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos6d ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor6d ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos6d ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now
