Prepare for Titanfall: how you'll have to rethink your FPS habits

OXM - Time for a bit of perspective. Titanfall might be 2014's biggest Xbox exclusive, and the most interesting blockbuster FPS since Halo 3, but it's still fundamentally a game in which players exploit basic principles of combustion in order to punt sharpened metal slugs at each other. Respawn's debut makes Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 seem awfully archaic, it's true, but any experience you may have acquired with the latter should get you off to a reasonable start with the former. There's only so many ways one can pull a trigger.

G20WLY3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

"2014's biggest Xbox exclusive"??

But I was going to get this for PC - it is still coming to PC, isn't it?!

If not I'll have to borrow my mates old 360. :(

EDIT: @ Below, yay - thanks! :)

Charybdis3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

Xbox one and 360 owners and pc owners will be able to play this game it is a shame that the game is not available for ps4 owners. I assume that this means this game will also be available on steam and therefore also the 'steam box'.

Seafort3794d ago

@Charybdis No this game is a Origin exclusive too so it will never be on steam as EA don't like to sell their games on competing digital stores.

I'm unsure of Titanfall especially in EA hands. I mean look what happened to Bioware and now DICE. They seem to just ruin game creativity and their dev studios all for the mighty dollar.

JasonKCK3794d ago

I just hope Origin isn't down when the game releases. This past week Origin has been a nightmare trying to sign in. I also hope EA doesn't treat this game like they did BF4. I have no plans on getting an X1 so PC is my only option for this game.

Blackdeath_6633794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

@Charybdis

it is not available on steam but you have to remember that the steambox is a PC not a console, if origin and titanfall have linux support you should still be able to play it on a steambox, if not then loading windows on your steambox shouldn't be too difficult. thats the beauty of an open platform like PC.

@JasonKCK
origin was down because of DDoS attacks by some internet trolls. the service should be fine before long

3-4-53794d ago

I'll also be getting this on PC most likely. It looks fun, and a bit different than other FPS games.

Problem is, after the past 8 years or so of FPS games, I'm starting to get burnt out on them.

Even games I love like BF4, I can only play a few matches in a row before I'm ready to play a different game.

Haven't had a 4+ hour long session of a FPS game in while.

I started to realize how many other game genres there were out there that I liked even more than FPS.

That being said, Titanfall does look really good.

frostypants3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

@Charybdis: SteamBox PCs can't play Windows games unless you install a Windows OS, in which case it's not really a SteamBox anymore. What makes a SteamBox a SteamBox is the SteamOS, which is Linux-based. Game support won't be that great for it for some time.

QuickdrawMcgraw3794d ago

Since Titan is a multiplayer only game will it be half the cost of a game with both multiplayer and single player campaign?

Well if you are trying to be accurate and correct... no its not an Xbox exclusive. 2014's biggest Xbox exclusive is Halo; hands down. Titanfall may however be the biggest game on the Xbox One this year. Personally I think that honor will go to Destiny as Xbox gamers will have plenty of time to test the Bungie's beta before launch.

n4rc3794d ago

Ya Microsoft exclusive is more accurate... But it's a Xbox exclusive in the context of consoles I suppose..

I'm excited for both destiny and titanfall.. but I'm kind of skeptical of destiny being all it's hyped to be.. the beta will be nice, I feel it shows confidence..

I already know what titanfall is.. it's what mw3 should have been.. lean and mean with focus on gameplay over all else..

Source engine won't look insanely gorgeous but should run like a champ

Irishguy953794d ago

If Sony fanboys can talk about Planetside and all those other PC games as PS exclusives, X1 Fanboys can talk about Titanfall as an X1 exclusive.

Volkama3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

If you want to be accurate it is xbox exclusive, since the game can only be played on xbox live servers (as far as we know so far anyway). Pedantic, but so are the "it isn't exclusive!" crowd in general.

PC for me.

Welshy3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

"Microsoft Exclusive", really? are we going down this road again?

I do my best to own all platforms to get the best of both worlds, but that phrase is just ridiculous and scraping the barrel.

Pretty soon there will be banner on Xbox games saying "Everything but Playstation Exclusive".

Let's just be honest with ourselves here, it's a multiplatform game that fanboys just like to latch onto because the rival console won't have it.

Is "Outlast" a "Sony Exclusive" since it's on PC/PS4 but not Xbone?

An "exclusive" is something that exists on ONE platform and cannot be played anywhere else. Let's just not even go down this road this gen.

Edit: @Volkama If you want to be accurate, it's being released via Origin therefore running on EA servers. I'm not defending any side or machine here, i just hate the whole pseudo exclusive talk. It's either exclusive or multiplatform, when was a grey area created where if a certain group of platforms that had it it was "platform exclusive" since one or 2 platforms may have it but another 1 or 2 don't?

fishy13794d ago

So then what do we call it welshy. A not on ps4,ps3,wii,wiiU,oui game.... THats far more stupid than this childesh argument that has gone on for far too long.
A CONSOLE exclusive would be only on one console, and yet still on other devises that are not standalone consoles.
So lets call it a console exclusive and stop being stupid. We dont need to name every other console its not on just because its on the PC.

G20WLY3794d ago

^Well the term "console exclusive" doesn't work either, because it's on 360 as well, that's why people still struggle to categorise it.

As for Planetside, it is a Sony game, I don't think anyone has described it as PS4 exclusive seeing as how it's got such a large PC-based community.

dcj05243794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

@Welshy what is sly 4 then? I thought ot was a playstation exclusive since its on PS3 AND PSVITA. Is it a multiplatform or a "Playstation exclusive". I think Planetside 2 is a Sony exclusive because its on PS4 and PC and is made BY sony. Titanfall is made BY Respawn entertainment who is not owned BY microsoft so it isn't a microsoft exclusive since its on PC too.

Welshy3794d ago

Do games NEED to be titled like that though?

Console exclusive, platform exclusive, Sony, Microsoft whatever...

It's quite simple, either it's exclusive or it's not not. Pretty black and white to me.

Anything in between is purely PR, marketing or for fanboy use.

Volkama3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

@welshy they previously said the PC version will use microsoft's servers. Origin accounts, origin login servers, sure. But in current info it seems the game will be played exclusively on xbox servers at all times.

You could argue that Live is as much "xbox" as the consoles are, Microsoft would sure like for it to be an all-encompassing service anyways.

So titanfall is xbox exclusive, in a kinda PR spin sense.

It'll be better with a keyboard and mouse IMO.

Agree with you though, the label makes no difference to me. It's fun or it's not. I was just chiming in on the topic I already labelled pedantic :-)

n4rc3793d ago

Welshy.. Why is Microsoft exclusive hard to understand..

Call a PC whatever you want.. It needs to run windows to play the game.. Hence its a Microsoft platform.. Just like Xbox one and Xbox 360.

Goku7813794d ago

To me if its not just for one system and coming to PC it's not exclusive.

come_bom3794d ago

Funny thing is that console gamers say they play games on their big a** TV's, sitting on the couch with a controller, and not on PC's because it's too complicated, expensive, hard to set up.... etc...etc (insert another excuse).

... now all of sudden everybody is getting the PC version of this game. LOL.

G20WLY3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

Well I don't have a 360 anymore and I'm not buying an XBone as well as PS4 - not for a while at least.

I spend one evening a week at my mate's, as I work over his way. He has an apparently good PC and so I scoop up PC games from time-to-time for us to play each week.

...Why am I explaining myself?! lol

3794d ago
denero13794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

lmao so right you called it lol. . .the same people saying they won't invest all this cash into a pc now turn around and say they'll play it on pc -_-

JasonKCK3794d ago

"now all of sudden everybody is getting the PC version of this game."

Half are just using that out of anger.

dsswoosh3794d ago

After playing PC games for 20 years, i can say no PC game has ever been too hard to set up.

The reason i no longer own a PC and would rather play on console is because it is more convenient.

PC's have become a waste of time for me.

DigitalRaptor3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

You don't need a complicated rig or and expensive setup to play Titanfall. That shizz runs on Source and is not graphically intensive to any degree of PC elitism. You'll log on to Origin and play the damn game. It's that simple, unless Origin plebs out on us.

I'm positive this game can be played on mid-range PCs everywhere. You know those things that most gamers and non-gamers out there have. There's technically a bigger market for Titanfall on PC than console, but I doubt sales will prove that.

Picking this game up on Xbox One.

AngelicIceDiamond3794d ago

@G20WLY If your Getting it on PC then have fun putting up with EA's Orgin going down and sign in troubles. This is the perfect example as to why console is simply better with this game.

G20WLY3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

lol, it's not my problem as it's not my PC - I wouldn't know where to start!

As for EA, I heard you had to sign in through Origin anyway - if it's down, you can't sign in, regardless of the platform you play it on.

I'm not choosing to play on PC though, as such, it's my only option outside of borrowing/buying another Xbox. I prefer consoles too, generally :)

AngelicIceDiamond3794d ago

@G20WLY The fact that you HAVE TO sign in through EA's Orgin is bad enough. By the time PC user get Orgin working console gamers will be well into the game already.

I'm being a bit harsh here. The game will be great regardless if its on console or PC. I just think console is better suited for this particular game. And if you can borrow an Xbox for this then that would be the way to go.

It will be best on pc unless they hold back because of the console version in which case many pc players wont touch it!

Multiplayer Fps like these are boring me so BRING ON DESTINY!

I hope you see the hypocrisy in your statement.

Hype hype hype. Keep hyping it people.
Most interesting FPS since Halo 3? Lol yeah forget CoD4 lol.

The_Truth_24_73794d ago

Just another pew pew game. Next.

JasonKCK3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

If this game was on the PS4 you would be saying something like "hahaha XBOX sux take that"

Why don't you just say "I'll get it on PC" like the others. You could just actually just get it on PC and avoid the thing you hate so much.

DigitalRaptor3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

There is another FPS game coming to PS4 around the same time as Titanfall, that isn't on Xbone. Do you know what this much larger scale, more ambitious, more vibrant, persistent MMO is called?

Planetside 2.

You and I could get Planetside 2 on PC if we wanted, but the point is, Titanfall is being hyped and the hype isn't really justified. Planetside 2 has been out and now that the dust has settled, bugs fixed etc, PS4 version should be tight. No one is raving about the PS4 version because money talks, and PS2 is free-to-play.

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad625d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g625d ago (Edited 625d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."

Respawn Entertainment is Discontinuing Sales of Original Titanfall

Sales for the original Titanfall are being discontinued.
It will be pulled from subscription services on March 1, 2022.

Ethereal906d ago

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad905d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal904d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
