Hacker Group DERP Attacks And Brings Down Live, Service Gets Restored Shortly Afterwards

GearNuke: After attacking many famous services like Steam, PSN and Origins and also targeting game related servers for Battlefield 4 and League of Legends; Hacker group DERP shifted their focus to Xbox Live and decided to take it down. Microsoft was quick enough to bring it back quickly.

What is the point of this? Why would someone punish innocent gamers. Sure you hate EA and Microsoft or whatever, but when you take down their servers, all you're doing is hurting the gamers the most.

mhunterjr3771d ago

They don't care. They are self proclaimed trolls. They have no agenda what-so-ever so screwing over gamers is just as satisfying to them as screwing with corporations.

NatureOfLogic3770d ago

Lmao at all of the damage control below. Do Xbox fanboys really think that MS service is immune to hacking? Their servers can be taken down just like anybody else. Also, when the same thing happened to PSN, Xbox fanboys were screaming "PSN is hacked again" while I was still playing online just fine.

mhunterjr3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

@natureoflogic

There's really no need for damage control. DDOS attacks aren't really aren't hacking... As they don't indicate a breach of security. PSN getting DDOS doesn't indicate that the network is insecure either, but people are still upset about previous legitimate breaches in security that happened on PSN.

Anon19743770d ago

Even if this was fake, this time, even if it was temporary, this is the perfect example of why an "always connected" future should worry us all. If the Xbox One had released as originally planned and you couldn't play a game unless your system was connected or you could "check in", all it takes is one motivated hacker group to potentially brick millions of consoles by taking the online service down and keep those consoles bricked as long as they can continue denying service.

GameNameFame3770d ago

It happens to everyone, but I love the xbox fanboy's reaction though. LOL

it is classic

gaffyh3770d ago

On the bright side, maybe this will shut up the fanboys that seem to think XBL is immune to this type of thing.

Not really a hack though.

http://www.engadget.com/201... just for the Xbox fans who think Xbox live can't be hacked it can so just stop the ignorance.

BattleAxe3770d ago

GameRanger was also down for a while on PC.

Cueil3770d ago

the service was restored back almost immediately. With an always connected future, you would have at least 24-hours before check in again, so you had plenty of time to play the game without problems.

You know, all it takes is a motivated thief to enter your home, and still your Xbox One/PS4 and all your games, to leave you without a good gaming afternoon too!

Move on. This is fake fanboy article. Live was not down since launch of XO. Been playing with no problems when this no sources hack took place.

yay1113770d ago

Did you see the real hackers ruin everything he has on his PC, probably angry because he found out that the hackers shirt size was XL XD

JasonKCK3770d ago

N4G is the only site on the net reporting this. The hacking of Live would be much bigger than N4G and would be front page news everywhere http://www.gamenewshq.com/ But it's not. That alone is enough to question the validity of this.

kreate3770d ago

U should say that the next time u see a psn hack article.

for some reason, when psn 'supposedly' has issues.

Everyone jumps on it.

When xbox live has issues, its like 'oh this is fake' lol

I've been on live and had plenty of issues. Nobody ever reports it though.

That's how much ppl love Microsoft.

And yet, n4g is supposedly a Sony fan site.

MarkusMcNugen3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

@JasonKCK

http://news.softpedia.com/n...

It was not a hack, just a DDoS. And multiple sites reported it. The one above is just one example.

JasonKCK3770d ago

"It was not a hack, just a DDoS. And multiple sites reported it. The one above is just one example."

What multiple sites? you found one blog entry. Go to the biggest gaming sites around the world and nothing. http://www.gamenewshq.com/ absolutely nothing. Not even Reddit, and they hate all things MS there. Find a better source other than a blog and I'll believe you.

They are attacking one guy and the games he plays.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3770d ago

Every gamer aren't innocent.
There are many that probably killed, stole or attack for a game system.
Start wars with other games but yeah I see what ya saying.

ZombieKiller3770d ago

I'm worried that one day a gamer is going to get so pissed at a hacker because of this stupid shit, and go after the hacker. A crime will take place like a beating or a shooting or something.....

...and they'll blame the games.

These hackers need to lose a hand 1st offense.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3770d ago

LOL ...

Live wasn't down! They never hacked Live. It's been fine this whole time. This is someone wanting Xbox Live to go down just like the rest of them did.

But guess what?

No.

Live did not go down. What a made up story. These guys were able to hack PSN and bring it down... hurry! Let's make pretend that Live was brought down and shut off too, and every single Live user couldn't get on...but let's just say they did it for a second, and got it back up quickly.

My butt.

razrye3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Seriously how thick are you? Psn wasn't hacked. It was a DDoS attack.

ZombieKiller3770d ago

@miDnIghtEr20C: You forgot to add the "is hurt" at the end of your so called statement...
Larry Hyrb SAID it was down for a little bit. He must be a PS fanboy though.... /s

SM-MF-H

...then you go on to convince what is most likely another dude, about the lenth of your ding dong...in an online chat about gaming.

.....it amazes me you even have 2 bubbles.

As for XBL being down, It might have gone down, it might not have. My sub expired a few days ago and I'm not renewing because my 3rd console just went RROD on me. Regardless, XBL up now (according to everyone saying so...), BOTH systems and networks have their issues starting with hackers, and ending with the companies trying to do things. Stop acting like fanboys, PSN and XBL are not perfect in any way and I'm sorry but I can't blame PlayStation and Xbox for "allowing" these lowlifes to attack their systems. That was something someone else did to them, not something they created. Secure or not, we are all still going to play on their networks regardless. Stop acting like miDnIghtEr20C by pretending your d!ck is the biggest in the room and start acting like gamers. Whether PSN or XBL, everyone has a prefrence.

They ran a DDoS against Xbox Live's login servers. It worked - for 20 whole minutes.

If I were DERP I'd be more worried that Microsoft has a track record of successfully hunting down and prosecuting these types of people.

Prime1573770d ago

I remember being on psn shortly around that psn article, I wouldn't doubt it's the same for live, after all, a ddos attack is just flooding a server with requests.

Ea took it, steam took it, psn took it, live took it. Just wake up, kid. Maybe the point he's trying to make is that you fanboys (on any side) are ridiculous for having the utmost faith in your service.

Xbox 360 Turns 18: Three Cheers to Live, Halo, and Red Rings

The Xbox 360 launched in North America 18 years ago, and is now officially old enough to buy you a drink in Europe.

darthv72161d ago

Great platform, and many of its games (not bc) still hold up well to this day. Like the PS3, I keep a 360 hooked up for those games you can't play any other way.

isarai161d ago

The last gasp of greatness from XBox, you are missed, except the RROD that was lame, but amazing exclusives until the Kinect dropped.

TheBrainZ161d ago

So many brilliant games. I still have one stored somewhere.

LG_Fox_Brazil161d ago

I really enjoyed my X360, some great exclusives on it. Used to play the shit out ot Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, two masterpieces

I remember when Live turned five and they had special edition controllers made and everything. Kind of wished they would do that again for the 20th.

Orchard532d ago

Happy Birthday. OG XBL (and later 360 XBL) really revolutionized online gaming on console.

Crows90532d ago

Never understood the obsession with live...but I was gaming online on PC so not sure too much of what live did that the PlayStation didn't.

Profchaos532d ago

I had a PS2 and it's online experience was fine but it didn't have the same level of polish voice chat never worked for me but I was trying to play from Australia where not many people played PS2 online to the point where many devs simply dropped the online mode from the pal version.
That's not all PS2 games mind you there were plenty that worked perfectly but it was more on the dev and not the platform

During that era I also played a fairly large amount on online PC games and they were undoubtedly better than both systems. PS2 from functionality and Xbox because it was free

Playing my friends original Xbox it was a really polished experience it felt robust yet simple things just worked there was zero config.

Crows90532d ago (Edited 532d ago )

Yeah but the time ps3 came the experience was the same on both based on what I played...not too much online though to be honest. But I do think that the xbox did help bring online into the console space a lot. As well as PC games to consoles.

Profchaos532d ago (Edited 532d ago )

Today would of been the perfect day to drop halo 2 the original bc version free on gwg.... If only
