There's really no need for damage control. DDOS attacks aren't really aren't hacking... As they don't indicate a breach of security. PSN getting DDOS doesn't indicate that the network is insecure either, but people are still upset about previous legitimate breaches in security that happened on PSN.

If the Xbox One had released as originally planned and you couldn't play a game unless your system was connected or you could "check in", all it takes is one motivated hacker group to potentially brick millions of consoles by taking the online service down and keep those consoles bricked as long as they can continue denying service.

the service was restored back almost immediately. With an always connected future, you would have at least 24-hours before check in again, so you had plenty of time to play the game without problems.

You know, all it takes is a motivated thief to enter your home, and still your Xbox One/PS4 and all your games, to leave you without a good gaming afternoon too!

As for XBL being down, It might have gone down, it might not have. My sub expired a few days ago and I'm not renewing because my 3rd console just went RROD on me. Regardless, XBL up now (according to everyone saying so...), BOTH systems and networks have their issues starting with hackers, and ending with the companies trying to do things. Stop acting like fanboys, PSN and XBL are not perfect in any way and I'm sorry but I can't blame PlayStation and Xbox for "allowing" these lowlifes to attack their systems. The reason you always hear a bunch of people saying "I was on all day and it never affected me" when something like this happens is that it is only taking down the LOGIN servers.

It makes it hard or impossible to log in, but if you are already online it won't affect you at all.

A couple of things... firstly, you realize hacking banks/credit unions and removing everyones debt would have a huge impact on our economy. Companies would shut down and never get payed the money they are owed for the services they provide.

Secondly, you DO pay Netflix for security. Where do you think the money to pay for IT personnel comes from? Your monthly subscription price. Which pays the company, which in turn pays their employees which some of those employees are IT security experts.

Thirdly, its not for nothing. You clearly no nothing about what you are talking about if you dont think servers cost a lot of money. Especially the scale of servers required to run a service like Xbox Live.

Lastly, PSN and Xbox Live both require a subscription to play online now. Im sure Nintendo doesnt, but they dont really have much of a networking infrastructure in comparison to Xbox Live or PSN. Trust me, there is a very real and logical reason Sony has put online gaming behind a paywall like Xbox Live has been for years.

Anyone who says any sort of service is impenetrable, you are just asking a group of hackers to prove you wrong, and fast.

The truth is, Live is a more secure and more dependable service than PSN. While Live has been down multiple times, it is barely a blip in comparison to the entire month PSN was down, let alone all of the other times for the service as well.

This sort of attack can happen to anyone and there is really not much you can do about it.

well it didn't bring down live for one it stopped people logging in who weren't previously logged in... it didn't affect everyone and has been confirmed as a DDOS attack by a number of people.

if you google DDOS attack i'm sure there's an application that will enable you to do it yourself if you so wish, DDOS isn't exactly rocket science.

DDOS are not a hacking, MS servers were not hacked, same way as PSN servers weren't hacked by the same group who are self-proclaimed hackers and "real" hackers have even said what they're doing is aloada crap

Because a group of hackers (Anonymous, TeamBerserk, DERP) use DDoS attacks to stop services from being online to end-users. And yes, it was a DDoS attack.

DDoS is not a hack. Anyone could do it with access to two or more computers. As far as I know DERP used LOIC to launch the DDoS. Most likely using a botnet to gain the bandwidth necessary to disrupt the service for a short amount of time.

The same thing happened a few years ago to Sony. Around the same time as the PSN hack that leaked personal information for millions of people (Not credit cards, as those were encrypted) anonymous also launched a DDoS campaign against a lot of Sonys websites.

Next time do some research before making a stupidly incorrect comment.
