Super Mario 3D World Sales Break past 1 Million, While Knack and Lighting Returns tank

Many media sites made a big deal out of Super Mario 3D World being outsold by Lighting Returns Final Fantasy 13 in Japan, and Knack in the UK. But as Nintendo titles always prove, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Super Mario 3D World has busted past 1 million units sold, while Lighting Returns and Knack sales have tanked.

LOL! Probably...But its good to say I told ya so, when everyone was claiming "damage control"

Hatsune-Miku3771d ago

I love knack and know its an underrated game. Its such a tragedy most reviews didn't properly reflect its merits and the end result lead to lower sales. Most people are sheep so they rely on society or others to tell them what to think or what is acceptable and unacceptable. Most reviews for knack gave demerits not because its a broken game but because its design isnt fresh or going in the same grain as other games in its genre.

NatureOfLogic3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

Mario finally sold one million, beating Knack. Slow clap for Nintendo fans. I'm still more impressed that Knack even threaten Mario.

Theyellowflash303771d ago

Knack never threatened Mario.

The Media played it out that way.

The UK is one small market compared to the rest of the world.

Mario "finally" sold more than 1 million? Nintendo games sell for long periods on time, not all at once. Its going be be well past a million 2 years from now.

Mikey322303771d ago

knack hasn't released worldwide.. this seems kinda unfair?

Theyellowflash303771d ago

Knack comes free with the console in Japan, so I don't know how much more it will sell.

Studio-YaMi3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

The article is obviously written by a Nintendo fanboy, there are many paragraphs where he puts theories in favor of Nintendo.

Knack is a great game, really a gem in the underrated video games category butchered by the biased media,I have the game, played it & finished it on Hard difficulty and I'm having a blast playing the challenge modes that open after you beat the game including hunting for the rest of the treasures, the game is EASILY an 8 out 10 for me when it comes to adventure/platformer games.

It was just hated on by the big media gaming websites and butchered in the reviews of these big websites that people are afraid to buy it and try for themselves.

Many small review gaming websites gave it decent scores.

People need to play this game and finish it(hard difficulty if possible) to really see how shiny this gem is instead of hating on it or dissing it just because some major gaming websites gave it low scores.

Edit :
I still haven't bought Mario yet because my girlfriend wants to play it with me,I'm sure it will be a blast though since I loved most(if not all) of the 3D Mario games.

Edit(2) :
Disagree all you want, you know that this is an article written by a fanboy from the paragraphs themselves,as for Knack beating Mario? that wasn't gonna happen since Mario games are still the leading point in Platformers but that doesn't exclude Knack from being a very well done game that is being looked down on.

AsimLeonheart3771d ago

SM3DW was always going to outsell Knack in the end. The point of the news at the time was the people's lack of interest in the console and its games. It was not some kind of competition between Knack and Mario. In the US, SM3DW was not even in the top 10 and the console sold only 220,000 in the whole November. In the UK, the game was outsold by Knack, was out of the top 30 in the second week and did not move any consoles. The major portion of the game's sales came from Japan which has no other option when it comes to buying next-gen consoles and games. Selling one million worldwide in more than a month is nothing to brag or celebrate about. Many games sell more than that in 24 hours. Killzone: Shadowfall sold 1 million in shorter time than Mario with a much smaller installed base of just 2.1 million consoles. SM3DW is an excellent game and it is selling well BUT it did not make the Wii U sales explode worldwide as many Nintendo fans predicted. That was point of the "Knack outselling Mario" articles at the time.

Chrischi19883771d ago

Funny, how people changed their minds. When the news came out, that Knack outsold Mario, all the doomsayers came around, everyone acted like it is the end^^

And now they say, of course Mario wins in that category, but before it was no "of course".

And now you say Knack did not get good enough ratings, that the media is biased? The whole media is totally biased, towards the Wii U. Everything what the PS4 got, was perfect, I bet it got better scores than it deserves, just because it was one of the launch titles of the PS4. The media loved the PS4 and all that came with it, so dont act like it wasnt that way. The actual wonder was, that Mario was soooo good, that not even the biased media was able to find anything bad, so they had to give it a super good score otherwise they would lose their credibility and strengthen other news sites, which tell the truth. That is how it was, if the media ever had the chance to make Knack any better then Mario, they wouldve instantly taken it, actually they did, with the "Knack outsold Mario" news^^

GTgamer3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

"The point of this article is to show people that Nintendo games sell for a long period of time."
So basically your happy that Mario surpassed knack :/ who didn't expect that I mean seriously

ShinMaster3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

Comparing MARIO to KNACK?

WOW what an achievement.

Nintendo fanboys are getting desperate.

user55757083770d ago

okay i guess people forget that 1 mil sales with an install base of 4.4mil is actually very good

2pacalypsenow3770d ago

@knockknockannefrank well thats all Nintendo consoles are good for Mario

FamilyGuy3770d ago

340K isn't really "tanking", not unless they spent a ton on making it. Pretty decent for a 3-4million install base actually.

One would hope it could outsell a launch title for a new system.

jcnba283771d ago

I don't think you understand the point he's making here. The trolls/haters had no problem boasting about how Knack outsold Mario on one day in the UK but now that Mario has clearly outsold Knack worldwide the trolls/haters are nowhere to be seen.

frostypants3771d ago

@jcnba28: That's because they were trolls. That's what trolls do. They're also likely not concerned with this at all. These articles just feed more trolls.

starfox0793769d ago

Knack was basically Sonys Wiisports a pack in title you can also buy seperate ??? so when you look at it this way Knack did terrible end of.....if Nintendo had 3D world at launch as a pk in title and with WiiU selling 3.1 million consoles in 6 weeks i'm sure 3D world would of been in most of them 3.1 million consoles......

Point is Mario 3D world will sell a copy for every 5 consoles bought....knack will stop selling very soon.

-Foxtrot3771d ago

Why is everyone going on about Knack...Lightning Returns tanked everyone...HELL YEAH :)

Take that Square Enix

jcnba283771d ago

The amount of flip-flopping going on in this comment section is beyond hilarious.

frostypants3771d ago

Point out the people who are flip-flopping.

3-4-53771d ago

It will sell more once Wii U is in more homes. So yea this game will be a steady burn of decent sales for the next 2-3 years.

I'm expecting a big bump from Mario Kart7, Super Smash & eventually Zelda U.

Every time another good game is released for Wii U, it gives you that much more reason to make the jump and finally get one.

It's just not happening the way we had all hoped and planned. O well, still eventually getting one, and I hope Nintendo is also secretly working on a Mario 64-2 or Galaxy 3 game.

_QQ_3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

I think the Title will draw some attention.
Shok you should make a top 10 games of the gen like blackbond, i'm curious to see your picks.

LOL at people saying knack is an underatted gem.... i bet you have no problem with TLOU gettings 10s but when the magority say a game is bad,not okay but bad because 59 meta is bad, then suddenly critics don't know what they are talking about.

If you enjoy repetitive gameplay mechanics, lame story, and no variety then you enjoyed knack, just because you like a game doesn't change those facts. You just can't debate those facts. Saying you enjoyed a game doesn't change the fact that you only have 2 attacks.

Joe9133771d ago

Hello those are opinions even what the critic writes is a opinion me myself have never played a game and agreed with a critic and I have been playing games since the Atari ppl can debate with you because what you are spewing is just opinion you can not pass your opinion off as fact sorry things do not work like that.

Beastforlifenoob3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

How is it a "fact" please explain to me how your opinions can be established as "fact".

Also I think Mario might be the better game overall I think Knack did a great job and I think it deserves more credit then Mario because they brought out a brand new IP.

EDIT: Also please dont say Mario has a great story... It is simple and always the same "mario is in need of the princess rescue!!!! Oh and bowsers got him."

cleft53771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

This is a Nintendo major IP, of course it was going to keep selling well. I said so earlier that when Knack goes on to be a PS+ game Super Mario World 3D will still be selling at a steady rate for full price.

This is something that Nintendo are masters at and why no matter what people say Nintendo isn't going to be hurting for cash for a long time.

Knack is a fun, solid game. Had Knack been made by Nintendo they would have delayed the game and continued to work on it making it a lot better. Sony is great, I love my PS4, PSVita, PS3, but it is clear that Knack was pushed out the door to be a launch game and that is a shame because Knack is a really special game that could have been amazing.

MadLad3770d ago

Nintendo is very sound, financially.
They could probably eat another two generations of Wii U's before the need to be worried.

It's part of the reason I think it's so laughable when people tell them to get out of the hardware business or they are going to go bust.
While the Wii U is very weak at the moment, they are still making bank overall and I don't see them ever wanting to leave the hardware business, console or handheld.

starfox0793769d ago

Knack in the hands only of Nintendo would of made that game good Sony knew all the time in the world wouldn't make it better so just released it that's the real reason...graphics are easy to achieve look at mariokart8,bayonetta2,x,ect ect its gamplay that is hard and Nintendo are specialists at defining gameplay even Platinum games will tell you how they made Bayonetta2 gameplay much better and hardcore....

N4g_null3764d ago

Even you feel as though knack was pushed out the door... why does sony believe they can just put out such half ass games?

Nintendo has very very old ip... you would think mario would run out of game play options.... but nope... they even limit their specs but whoops their we all are having a blast.... crazy aint it.

it sort of illustrates how gamers and devlopers has lost sight in what console gaming is.

The power of the ps4 was suppose to enable better games so why is knack not a better game?

the worst3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

who cares wii u will completely dead in 2 years.
BTW Knacks not out in japan yet

The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Deserves a Remaster

Final Fantasy 13 was first introduced to us back in 2009, almost four years after Final Fantasy 12 was released, and fans had been eagerly anticipating the next installment. But when it finally arrived, there were mixed reactions, including complaints about its linearity, the lack of towns and NPCs, and the limited control over the characters. At the time, Square Enix kept its game production behind closed doors and didn't take in a lot of feedback — especially from Western fans.

The game has been revisited by many different Final Fantasy fans since then, and some, like myself, have come to love it again. Almost all staple entries in the series have found their way to modern consoles, so it's about time that the FF13 trilogy gets a remaster

I've been thinking about this. I agree. While I really disliked it at first I never played it again. After hating ff15 so damn much I just think it can't be worse then 15 and if I'm not mistaken atleast it's turn based. I need more of that in my life.

nitus10332d ago

I actually finished FFXIII and on the second playthrough found I actually liked the game.

Actually I have liked most of the FF games (I have not played FFIX unfortunately) and I do agree with you with regards to FFXV. Graphically IMHO FFXV is excelent but for some reason I just could not get enthusiastic in playing it.

As for "turn-based", I prefer active and real time although to be fair "turn-based" is a real plus especially when confronting a difficult protagonist. I found this to be especially the case when playing FFXXII where you could switch rapidly between "turn" and "active" although having a resonable knowledge of simple Boolean Algebra is IMHO essential when playing this game.

332d ago
Levii_92332d ago

Ridiculous comment, first of all i think you should replay 15, second of all that game is 10 times better than the XIII games especially the royal edition. And third .. turn based combat is a dying (almost dead) style of gameplay and i personally wont miss it at all so don’t act like that is some sort of big plus because XIII has it.. it is not.

jambola331d ago

Somebody needs to learn about subjective taste

shinoff2183331d ago

Ff15

Sucked imo. I don't need to give it another try. Last time was the 3rd time and I had 34 hours into it. It just wasn't good imo

Chriswynnetbh331d ago

How is turn based dying or almost dead? Pokémon is one of the biggest RPGs in the world and is and has always been turn based. To some it is a plus especially when it comes to FF since the first 10 of them all are and are arguably better games than any FF to come after

CDbiggen331d ago

XV was rubbish, but understandable given the development hell. That overworld for me is the biggest example, so strangely designed and empty. And parts of the story awkwardly cut for DLC, most egregious being that prompto part where he's like "I'm a clone", or whatever he was (it was that forgettable), and the other guys basically shrugging it off.

Tapani331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Turn-based is alive and well: Pokemon, Dragon Quest, XCom, Civilization, Homeworld, Age of Wonders, Total War, Original Sin, Baldur's Gate, Warhammer, Yu-Gi-Oh, Company of Heroes, Wasteland, Pathfinder, Disco Elysium, Octopath Traveler, Chained Echoes and many, many more great games, both new and old, franchises and new IPs are selling well, reviewing well and sequels are coming.

If you don't play the game, maybe the turn-based has just died in/for you, but certainly the genre has never been so alive as in 2023! Plus, when you look at Final Fantasy franchise, it started going down in quality when it left turn-based combat behind. FFXVI may redeem some of the glory (and FFXIV was great), but the turn-based games were higher rated and deeper in terms of gameplay and had more interesting things to do in the world.

DarXyde331d ago

I'd say Persona 5 is one of the best of the best games in a couple of decades.

I don't think you manage that with a dying gameplay format.

shinoff2183331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Levii92

Turn based is way funner imo then just some hack n slash rpg. I like both but prefer turn based.

Far as dying I doubt it. It's also kinda funny cause the best final fantasy have been turn based. Ff still to this day can't top ff6 through ff9. Interesting.

Far as someone who brought up persona 5. I dislike the art style so I've yet to play it but I'd throw dq11 in there. Best jrpg I've played in fkin years. Over a decade.

Last I was a bit iffy on chained echoes because of the sp and no traditional leveling system. I recently bought it. Looks gorgeous, story is fantastic so far, but I cannot for the life of me get over how much I truly hate the leveling system. It's just flat out whack to me. I'm still going to finish it cause unlike ff15 atleast chained echoes doesn't feel like a chore

goldwyncq331d ago

The XIII series (especially Lightning Returns) has far better combat than XV, and you don't need to watch an anime and a movie to make sense of the story.

FinalFantasyFanatic331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

15 was only fun for derping about in the wilderness, at least FF13 had a better story and was more coherent overall (plot, characters, gameplay, world, ect...).

15 was just beautify garbage, so much wasted potential, the Duke Nukem Forever of the FF franchise.

I really loved Persona 5, can't wait for P6 to be announced, I'd love ports of the first few games (we already have P3P/P4G/P5R available on almost everything now).

Not really

Let them move on and focus on good FF games

Hofstaderman332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Thank you. A ton of FFXIII articles recently. Most of the people who like this game are not old enough to have played 4 to 9. Even 10 and 12 are vastly superior to this game. That being said a remaster would then make all the FF titles available on the PS platform.

jambola331d ago

Citation needed
Do you have some kind of official survey of ff 13 fans ages?
Would love a link
Also, all games are available on multiple systems, re released many times
"Not old enough" doesn't even make much sense

shinoff2183331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

That was part of what I was trying to say. I've gave 15 3 try ff13 deserves atleast a second. And like I said I could use some turn based in my life

I've also played through or played all of the ff games starting with ff1 way way way back.

goldwyncq331d ago

"Good" is subjective. I love FFIX but I know many fans who don't like it for the art style and the slow combat.

I_am_Batman332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Recently replayed them and I agree a remaster would be great. The complaints about linearity are fair, but they only really apply to the first half of the first game and while I agree that it would've been nice to have proper towns, minigames and subquests, it didn't detract from the intriguing story, interesting characters, tactical gameplay and amazing soundtrack in my opinion.

XIII-2 fixes a lot of the issues of XIII and expands on the story in interesting ways. The combat and progression builds on top of the systems of XIII and the nonlinearity and discoverability of secrets is a big inprovement over the original game. It's easily the best game of the trilogy.

Lightning Returns was probably a bit too experimental for it's own good. It tried to reinvent the wheel for no reason. The solo party for most of the game and the outfit based combat felt like a downgrade over XIII-2 combat system. It does have a unique vibe, but the plot kinda goes off the rails and many of the story beats didn't land as much for me as they did in the first two games. The race against time aspect was an interesting idea, but it never felt like it mattered, because it wasn't much of a challenge to manage the remaining time even while doing all the subquests.

Eonjay332d ago

XIII-2 is one of the greatest games ever.

Snookies12331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

XIII-2 is by far the best of the trilogy. Went out of my way to get the Platinum trophy on it. Which is actually a fun one to go for. Didn't take too long, only about 70-80 hours to accomplish. Loved every second of it though.

Youngindy21332d ago

I don't think linearity is a fair critique, when every FF up until that point was fairly linear esp. in the first half of the game. People herald FF VII(including the remake), but it is just as linear as FFXIII was. The linearity complaints came at a time when open-world games were just starting to become a thing and people thought every game should be open-world, but now that every game is, people now want more linear experiences. Go Figure.

shinoff2183331d ago

Ff10 was pretty linear to. Haven't played through all of 13 but 10 was linear as fk until the end

I_am_Batman331d ago

Totally agree. I never fully understood why 10 was so universally praised when it had many of the same design philosophies xiii is criticized for.

CDbiggen331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

I felt the same for the most part except the LR combat system. I thought it was an upgrade on the party of three system the previous two games had as now you had more control over your moves with different sets being an L1/R1 click away, and could move the single character around in battle and attack limbs or tails of certain enemies, or reduce the distance between you and an enemy you're after saving ATB.

I_am_Batman331d ago

LR combat certainly has it's merits. I would've preferred it if it wasn't tied to the costumes which can make Lightning look quite ridiculous and out of place sometimes though.

But mainly I would've preferred to see an evolution of XIII-2 systems. Since they are so different it's obviously just a preference. Can't really compare them objectively.

CDbiggen331d ago

Yeah I get ya, and I can totally see why the costume part got to people. I'm someone that doesn't care what the character looks like as long as I'm happy with the stats (looking at Xenoblade). LR to me is just one of those odd games that I can't help respect for mixing things up, even if the outcome wasn't the best lol. But yeah too different to compare.

sadraiden331d ago

Why would a remaster be great? They exist in HD, on a console that is still compatible with modern televisions, and you just replayed it.

I_am_Batman331d ago

I replayed them on my PS3. I just think it would make sense for those games to be more accessible to Playstation gamers, which is where the majority of the modern FF fanbase is (due to the exclusivity deals of VII Re and XVI).

Why The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Has Some of The Best Music In The Series

As we celebrate Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary, let’s look back at the underrated soundtracks of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy.

game-grooves.com
goldwyncq489d ago

It really does. Caius’ theme is still one of the best villain themes ever.

SeTTriP489d ago

Barthandelus is a great boss theme to.

Snookies12489d ago

Come on... Even haters of Final Fantasy XIII have to admit the soundtrack really was great. There are some parts of the OST that stand out among even Nobuo's work.

CrimsonWing69489d ago

The battle themes are pretty amazing, man.

gold_drake489d ago

sat what you want about the games, but the soundtrack has always been good.

MehmetAlperTR488d ago

Agreed... Legendary Nobuo Uematsu was not involved with FF13.. So that has got terrible musics.

jambola488d ago

so any game without no Uematsu has terrible music?

MehmetAlperTR488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

@Jambola nope... But in PS1 era we played FF7-8-9 and in a PS2 era FF10... They were all involved with Uematsu San. We grove up with him and his musics.. SO FF means, him and his music to us.

It's alright but I mean with so many other FF games it's not even in the top 10 for me

You just can't beat IX, VII, X and my personal favourite VIII when it comes to music

Even the theme song sucks, instead of just having an English version of the Japanese theme they got X Factors Leona Lewis to do the song which didn't sound like FF theme song.

FinalFantasyFanatic489d ago

Yeah, that ending song was terrible, I'll never be able to fathom why that was chosen, it feels so out of place with that game.

RedDevils489d ago

Lol is was my wtf moment.

SoulWarrior490d ago

I agree, regardless of the general consensus of the game itself, FF rarely lets down when it comes to the music at least.

porkChop490d ago

Nah. VIII has the best music in the series. IX is a close second.

Hofstaderman489d ago

Yes; eyes one me, man with the machine gun, waltz to the moon, the oath, maybe I’m a lion…FF8 has the best music in the series by far. I have the original OST, the orchestra arrangement, the piano arrangement, the Black Mages tracks and a few other albums. My four disc original OST is my pride and joy.

ManMarmalade489d ago

I agree on VIII. I've started growing really fond of X's lately.

GoodGuy09489d ago

Music was pretty good yes. Pretty much all FFs do even the crappy ones lol.
