Wired Review: Mario Kart Wii Skids Way Off The Road

Oh, Mario Kart. What have they done to you?

The Mario Kart series, in which Nintendo's famous mascot characters jump into go-karts and race each other on wacky tracks, has been one of Wired's favorite series ever since the 16-bit days. Since Nintendo has only ever released one Mario Kart game for each of its consoles, the launch of each new version is always a big event, and hasn't ever been disappointing.

Until now.

If they did gimp the battle mode, then I agree wholeheartedly with this review. Though I think mario kart pales in comparison to crash team racing (I never played double dash, though, and apparently the power sliding actually required skill, like in CTR?).

its true ...never was into mario karts battle mode...and now its worse ..... HOWEVER....playing battle mode with my brothers = 100% laughter

But yeah i love mario kart for the racing.

Totally they replaced the Last man standing style of play with a timed mode.... what a waste, as soon as you loose your 3 balloons you get 3 more, didn't they have any gamers test the game before release. The battle mode was why I loved the snes version so much, Also to bad they left out so many quality snes maps.

ChickeyCantor5846d ago (Edited 5846d ago )

well when you loose 3 bubbles you loose one point, so i didnt mind that.

Yes the classic maps are a shame, but new tracks arent bad and the online mode is fun.
So if we take the bad and good its still balanced.

it's so sad that Nintendo dropped the ball on this one... I was on the fence about getting this game, but after reading the most recent reviews it looks like that's not gonna happen.

The level design and graphics are great!.

However battle mode, the menu system, and AI tactics (very frequent blue+red shells when no.1) are rather poor.

Muddyalcapones5844d ago

well, i have friends who are getting it so ill just play it there, but a good battle mode being gone saddens me, I loved that back on the SNES

surprised it didn't get a 10/10.

Always remember Polygon's take on MK 8 and how it would end up being worse selling entry in franchise history. Oof. MK 8 deluxe is going to have one hell of a holiday. You know that Switch bundle is coming back.

Sgt_Slaughter911d ago

Polygon having a bad take? Sounds 100% accurate to me.

Baffles me that they haven't made any new dlc for this, and yet they focus on the mobile game smh

meganick911d ago

I can only imagine that the Mario Kart devs have been hard at work on the follow-up to 8, hence why it got no dlc.

Inverno911d ago

We can only assume that they'll show something next year if they are working on the next game. With the way Ninty has been announcing games close to their release they don't leave room for any leaked info

--Onilink--911d ago

Its not like its the same developer. The one working on the mobile game isnt even a Nintendo developer
