User Gets Account Hacked On PSN And Gets Credit Card Abuse, Loses Everything As Sony Locks Account

Sony's PSN service was under heavy fire and scrutiny when the network was compromised by hackers and it was classified as "external intrusion" when hackers got hold of all the credit card numbers and data from the network. This resulted in bad press for Sony as it tried hard to contain the breach and fix the issue as soon as possible as well as offering protection to the customers whose credit cards may have been compromised.

Nothing really to report here. Sony is simply doing what Microsoft would do in the same situation. They lock the account, do their investigations, determine if the hack was genuine, and then hopefully do whatever they can to reverse the situation and get this game back his account with no charges...

Sorry to hear about this guys problems, I have been lucky that this has never happened to me before on Xbox Live, and I am new to the PSN network (less than 1 month), so I hope I never have to face anything like this.

majiebeast3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

Same for every account system, i remember being hacked in WoW and the investigation took Blizzard a month. That was a long month:P

xHeavYx3787d ago

That's why I never save CC info anywhere. I'd rather spend 5 minutes re-typing the info instead of having to deal with things like these

VanguardOfCalamity3787d ago

Not sure if this would have helped this individual as I'm unsure how his PSN account was compromised but you can:

"Enable password at checkout from PlayStation Store"

of course if they got your password your SOL

dcj05243787d ago

Well said @xHeavYx i alwaus remove my cc info on everything and type it in when necassary.

DragonKnight3787d ago

"But everything has its flaws. Sony’s PSN service was under heavy fire and scrutiny when the network was compromised by hackers and it was classified as “external intrusion” when hackers got hold of all the credit card numbers and data from the network. This resulted in bad press for Sony as it tried hard to contain the breach and fix the issue as soon as possible as well as offering protection to the customers whose credit cards may have been compromised."

That entire paragraph is completely wrong. First of all, no one's CC info was compromised. I repeat, NO ONE'S CC info was compromised. It was encrypted. Secondly, it wasn't a hack. An unauthorized individual was given security keys to access PSN with developer credentials. Sony found out, and the month of downtime was to shut down the current state of PSN, get new servers, and move the entire operation to a completely new city so as to prevent this from happening again.

"Today, a PSN user faced the same issue, that is, he woke up to unauthorized transactions from his PSN account which also had his credit card linked to it. The user, Spiritualized_80, today on PlayStation’s Official Support Forums, reported that he woke up to confirmation emails about his purchases of wallet points for Fifa. These transactions were made at 5am local time of the user at which he was asleep. Confirming that it wasn’t him who made these transactions and also that he has never ever shared his PSN account or the username/password for his account with anyone, it can only mean that he was the latest victim in PSN hacking."

This wasn't a hack in the traditional sense then. Fifa has had this happen on Live before as well. This means that PSN wasn't hacked. It's more likely his account was phished without his knowledge. If PSN were hacked, there'd be a lot more stories like this one and so far there hasn't been.

Bad reporting is bad.

kreate3787d ago

Another epic failing article with a misleading title to sway the sheeps.

moparful993787d ago

This is why I use a prepaid card to buy things online especially on PSN or Xbox Live....

Pogmathoin3787d ago

Exactly. Prepaid cards is the only way.... Safest!

andibandit3787d ago

@dragonknight how does moving to a new city prevent it?

DragonKnight3787d ago

@andibandit: It was a method of needing to hire completely new staff to remove the leak that distributed the security keys in the first place. It's unlikely that employees would relocate so they would likely have to hire completely new people thereby lowering leak potential.

FACTUAL evidence3787d ago

Don't understand this. In order for someone to had abused his cc info on his acc either, A: the person was on the persons playstation on his account.
B: the guy gave his cc info to the hacker.

You cannot keep cc info on the ps3 if you do not know the cc info, psn deletes the billing info if you don't know the info, but want to proceed to use the account, but whatever..

UltimateMaster3787d ago

That also happened on the Xbox with Fifa.
Is EA the one responsible for those so-called hacks?
It sure looks that way, because it's not the first time I've heard illegal transactions from Fifa.

Prime1573787d ago

Wait, more fifa hacks? Funny how this is all I hear lately about hacks on both consoles. Wake up, people, change your pw and be wary if you play fifa.

DeathOfTheFanBoy3786d ago

@xHeavYx You are much more at risk from key loggers doing it that way mate, google it, what you are doing is WAY more risky.

MajorMayhem703786d ago

Call it whatever you want to call it. To shut down a service because info "may" have been compromised is not a good thing. Plain and simple.

Why is Fifa always attached to new psn accounts being "compromised?"

Microsoft has got nothing to do with this news. You don't always have to bring up Microsoft whenever something like this happens

JohnnyTower3787d ago

Yes he does. Xbox is on his mind like the ex girlfriend he still thinks about.

Neonridr3787d ago

@getmad - I was merely making a connection in that Sony is doing what basically any company would do in this situation.

@JohnnyTower - I am married with a 17 month old son. Grow up.

JohnnyTower3787d ago

@Neonrider so you've never had an ex gf? Glad you got hitched to your one and only. Congrats.

rainhell773787d ago

I feel sorry for his 1 year old! Grumpy father

pompombrum3787d ago

Mentioning a rival in a story that has nothing to do with them? Isn't that what Xbox fanboys do in every Microsoft/Xbox article whenever someone says anything remotely negative towards MS/X1?

Neonridr3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

@JohnnyTower - If your original comment was sincere and not trying to make some stupid joke, maybe I would have taken it a little more seriously. But alas, since you were trying to be juvenile, I replied back with the level of respect you deserved. I own a PS4 and a Wii U, so your Xbox comment is completely irrelevant.

@rainhell77 - I am sorry you feel that way. My son is loved to death and an amazing kid. If you want to feel bad for him, be my guest. But since you don't know either me or my son your judgement comes with little or no merit. But thank you for insulting me regardless ;)

@LoveOfTheGame - thank you for the Grammar lesson, I didn't know I was back in school again. I think I would have said "married to" if I was trying to be that specific. :P

I wasn't bringing up the "competitor" to stir up anything, I was saying it would be no different if this was Microsoft, Blizzard, any other company that has an online account that could be hacked. I am sorry for singling Microsoft out in my comparison, I guess I should have just stuck to the words "other companies" to be safe.

kreate3787d ago

Making a comma argument to instigate a argument is pretty low.

SilentNegotiator3787d ago

Security is an area of concern for all platforms. PC services aren't unified and Nintendo's online history is, well, miniscule, so of course Xbox Live is the one that's going to come up.

I've got to agree. This article has nothing, not a thing, not even mentioning any similarity, what would Microsoft do in this case, nope, nada. It's about Sony. Just Sony.
I own an Xbox One and a PS4. I wouldn't want any of my info compromised by either network. Sony needs to tighten up. Microsoft needs to tightening up as well so it doesn't happen on their system.

Debaitable3787d ago

Say exact thing happened to me on my Xbox account. A bunch of FIFA cards bought through my account.

Sayai jin3787d ago

@Heavy, while deleting your information after your purchase or using a prepaid card might help in a account hack, it does not help when there is a full security breach. People need to remember, that you do not need to leave your CC info on the account to have it hacked. Anytime one makes an online purchase and enters the CC number, security code, name, and address it is stored (digitally stamp); every online and in store transaction is stored.

Christopher3787d ago

But this isn't what happened here.

This is a single account affected and solely because he had his personal info saved for future use.

What the real issue here is the link to FIFA. For some reason, this game is easily hacked for buying things from other people's accounts. This is nothing new and happened last generation a ton as well.

Sayai jin3787d ago

Agreed, I understand hats not what happened here . My comment was for those who think that by deleting their info makes them more secure. A full breach of MS, Sony, Best buy, etc would put anyone that used cc's during the breach at risk.

Its weird that only his account was hacked. Hackers for the loss.

TronEOL3787d ago

Also it's worth noting that you have to re-enter your credit card info if you have it stored on your account, and take that account to a new console.

So if someone somehow got a hold of your PSN Account info, they would have to re-enter your credit card information. If they choose to skip this step, your CC info is deleted from your PSN account.

So if this person had their card charged, it must have been something they did wrong. Maybe they fell for a scammers email and entered all their info on a scam site claiming to be Sony.

rainslacker3787d ago

Sounds more like he's the victim of a phishing scam and not really a hack. Somehow, somewhere, he didn't protect his UN/PW well enough and someone logged into his account and used it. Everyone says they did nothing that would allow that to happen, but it does happen.

Not sure why this merits a story though. It happens every day with almost every console, account, banking or website that uses passwords and username combinations.

harrisk9543786d ago (Edited 3786d ago )

If this is a single incident, how do we know if it was a "hack" into PSN or identify theft of that particular person? I've had a Macy's account stolen from me twice and a Best Buy account on another occasion.

BallsEye3786d ago

Correct but one thing sony is not doing is upgrading their security. Accounts getting stolen way too easily and often.

ziggurcat3785d ago

This has nothing to do with sony or PSN. It's related to FIFA, which has happened on Xbox, too.

BelkingOfSony3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

The moral of the story... never leave your card info on your online accounts, not just PSN but also Xbox Live, Amazon, EBay etc. Once you use it for purchases, delete it immediately.

Snookies123787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

Just out of curiosity, can you still not delete cards from Xbox Live accounts? I know back when I had my 360, I couldn't find any way to delete my old card numbers.

I agree though, it's much safer to just delete them after use. Unless you use something really frequently.

BelkingOfSony3787d ago

even if I use the card for purchases frequently, I still delete the info afterwards. I would rather spend 5 minutes typing in my card info instead of it being saved into my account ready for hackers to take. in other words... better safe than sorry.

kreate3787d ago

U can add, delete, or edit Ur payment info.

USA0073787d ago

If I have my card on a gold subscription, I can't remove the card until it runs out, even if I remove the recurring payments I still can't remove it. Even called Xbox support, they said that if they removed it the gold subscription would end and not go for its full time

teedogg803787d ago

Exactly. When I use my credit card info I delete it as soon as the transaction is done.

LOGICWINS3787d ago

Funny, just a few days ago I decided not to use the free month of Plus that came with my PS4 because Sony demanded I save my credit card info into the system.

It pays to be smart.

Just use the damn PSN cards. Thats what they're there for.

Christopher3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

You can delete it right after the transaction is made. Your credit card is still stored in a database somewhere, but not as an active CC. Only as a note on what CC was utilized. And, the non-encrypted portion is just the last 4 digits. The full data is encrypted.

I use PayPal for my stuff. Just have to remember to re-up my PSN sub manually each year by moving the $50 over to my PSN wallet.

LOGICWINS3787d ago

Thats a HUGE relief. I thought I'd be locked on PSN forever or something. I'll try it out tonight!

Neonridr3787d ago

I know with the Nintendo eShop, even if you save your credit card info into the system, there is still a password you have to type in at checkout before the transaction is approved. So without that password, even if someone hacked your account they can't purchase anything.

does the PSN have the same security feature at all?

nunley333787d ago

Yes they have that security feature and I use it.

Neonridr3787d ago

I will have to enable that then.. just an extra step to help with security.

bornsinner3787d ago

DinoNYC3787d ago

Never had my C.C hacked on PSN in the 7 years I've had it...

what's your point? Is XBL or Microsoft immune to hacking? You need a reality check in that case. Amazon, Ebay, Target, Netflix...everyone has been hacked for credit cards.

TronEOL3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

Same here. But I also never had my PSN account hacked either. Or my Steam account. Or my Gmail/Hotmail for that matter.

This stuff is purely random, or an attack at an individual. Xbox has this problem just like every other platform or service.

rainslacker3787d ago

I have a seperate CC I use for all my online stuff. It's a pre-paid thing through my bank that I can quickly move money to directly from my bank account when I need it. I typically keep about $100 on it.

I use it for all my online transactions, whereas my regular bank card has access to my entire account. In the past 5 years I've been doing this, I've never had that online CC hacked even though I keep it saved on various services/websites/etc. I have had my regular CC, which I only use for physical transactions, not even on the phone, used without my authorization twice, once for $14,000 before my bank decided maybe it was fraud and contacted me.

So with my pithy anecdote, I ask you, what's your point? Any security can be broken. It only takes one mistake at the wrong time.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers8d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197228d ago

Helldivers 2...

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic28d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12529d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91329d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer29d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91328d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit28d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6928d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit28d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher29d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken29d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197228d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
