talkplaystation.com shows your how to run gta 4 at 1080p. You obviously need a 1080p set in the 40 inch range.

And only NOW people realize it?

I told people about unclicking the other settings to make 1080 last year

sonarus5857d ago

I honestly can't believe this got approved. GTA4 is 640p on PS3. This doesn't change it, its just a neat trick that i though everyone knew about. This is ridiculously lame

prunchess5857d ago

You can definitely see a difference when you unclick those lower settings on my 42" LG LCD. Picture looks a little bit sharper.

I only posted a comment the other day saying that when I checked to see what the resolution was on my LCD when I played GTA (article said it was running at 640 or something), it was displaying at 720p @ 60hz. I couldn't understand why though. This article and the posts by Silellak have clear this up now. When I check now to see what resolution it is running in it displays at 1080p @60hz.

Bubbles you ye Silellak.

Pika-pie5857d ago

TheMart, have you played both versions of GTA. Probebly not. I have!!

GTA PS3 looks better. Trust me. Yeah maybe the 360 does look very slightly sharper (and you really have to look to notice, i had to go back and forth over and over again) but the PS3 version has less framey issues and very little pop-in, it is very notable. Its just a cleaner and smoother experiance... Sorry

SiLeNt KNighT5857d ago

some people dont have a chance to read every single article on N4G so repeat or not im glad it was posted. i tried it out on my Philips 47" and i can see a noticeable difference. everything just looks a little sharper than it did before.

deeznuts5857d ago

All this does is upscale 640p to your displays native 1080p. Newsflash, your TV does the same thing if you feed it something other than 1080p (assuming you have a 1080p display of course). You want to do this if you are certain your PS3 does a better job of upscaling than your TV.

This is analogous to when you were in college (or in, or about to be) and you typed all that you could type for a term paper, but unfortunately it only comes out to 6.4 pages. Your teacher requires at least 10 pages. So you increase the font, increase the line spacing, widen the margins, and increase the header footer size. Voila, you have a 10.8 page paper. But you haven't really created any new info.

Same thing here. You're not creating any new info/resolution. Just stretching the existing resolution, and your TV does the same thing already. Question is, which one does it better.

prunchess5856d ago

From reading this thread I'd say that anyone noticing a difference when they switch to custom settings on the PS3 is due to the PS3 upscaling better that their HD TV.

I've had a go at checking out the different settings and without a doubt there is an improvement in picture by using this custom setting.

SL1M DADDY5856d ago

Not sure what inexpensive online college you went to but at my University, the professors go by word count and a Flesch-Kincaid scale, not by how many pages you can come up with. Also, the font and spacing along with rule and margins need to be formatted according to University standards and cannot differ. Sorry, but your analogy sucks.

Adamalicious5856d ago

You are correct. If you have a 1080 native set it will ONLY display 1080 vertical lines of resolution, ever. Period.

There's is no reason to do this - all it will really do is inconvenience you when you play certain games. There's a reason they want you to check the boxes for all resolutions you screen supports - it's so you don't have to reset your video settings all the time.

deeznuts5856d ago (Edited 5856d ago )

Sl1m, I went to college before you were just a twinkle in the eyes between your two dads. about 8 years ago. When we still typed up pages on the computer and printed them and turned them in. Did that in law school as well.

Not sure what this flesch-kincaid word count stuff is, sounds like a naughty game you play with male teachers or TAs! Or must be a newfangled technique to catch newer students for stuff we got away with in college! Sucks for you!

Mikey_Gee5856d ago

I have also played both version

http://img337.imageshack.us...

I think the jaggies in the PS3 version are TERRIBLE. I find the colors muddy, the PS3 version not to be as sharp/detailed and I find the frame rate of the 360 version to be better as well.

PS
I included the pic since it stand more value as proof I have both consoles and the game for both as well. But I am selling the PS3 version tonight. I bought both to decide for myself the better version, and from my comment I am sure you know my choice.

This is not being a FANBOY, just being honest

this post this article that video shows that your wrong mart

Silellak5857d ago (Edited 5857d ago )

Technically, he's not wrong.

Every game has a basic "native resolution". Pixel counters have found the basic native resolution for GTA4 is 720p for the 360 and 640p for the PS3.

However, ALL games this generation run at either 720p, 1080i, or 1080p using upscaling. There is no such thing as a 640p TV, or a 604p TV, or whatever resolution the pixel counters claim a game runs at. Most modern HDTV's will automatically upscale to their native resolution (either 720p or 1080p), and if they don't, then the game console itself upscales it to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

The only exception is that the PS3 can't upscale a 720p to 1080i, and if a TV only supports 1080i - and the game hasn't been written to support 1080i - then the game will be downscaled to 480p (standard definition).

Games that run in actual HD natively tend to be a bit "sharper" than games that run at a lower native res and then upscale the image. That's really the only difference.

The only time 1080p is really impressive for a game is when the game natively supports 1080p. ANY game can be converted to 1080p, the question is whether or not it looks GOOD doing so.

So, uh, I guess the overall point of this is he's not technically wrong when he says GTA4's native res is 640p, but the truth of the matter is that it doesn't really mean much except to super videophiles like, well, the people who figured it out in the first damn place.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5857d ago (Edited 5857d ago )

If the a TV has a resolution of 480p you would have to turn off your console to reset it. The PlayStation 3 is an HD (High Definition)console so an SD (Standard Definition) TV things will change. So when my settings are set for an HD TV the PlayStation 3 will only work for HD sets. If the TV isn't HD than I would have to reset my console making my icons look a lot bigger.

If I don't reset the console's resolution than nothing won't show on the TV. The PlayStation 3 can upscale things like Blu-ray, DVD, or PlayStation 2 games. The whole point of upscaling is so the resolution of the content fits the screen.

So with the PlayStation 3 comment about downscaling you'll know for sure if it is. Everything looks different when downscaled which makes me think about the XBOX 360 (most likely isn't an HD console).

This video is just showing you that if your set supports that it will force every to display only the best. Instead of the recommended.

Legion5857d ago

You are clueless, you use double negatives to try and make a point. And you make me laugh... I bet you work at Kmart in the video section. lol

If your TV has the capabilities to run all resolutions then it will choose the native resolution. If your TV is set so that it only will display at 1080P then if it WILL upscale the video so that it plays at that reslotion. Basically multiplying pixels to fill holes that would otherwise not exist due to the resolution of the actual media. Depending on the resolution, upscaling can be seemless.

As for downscaling. Well, basically just the same... the set will not show pixels so that it can display it within a 480p output.

It's all simple... but Some One Plays makes everyone else look like rocket scientists.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5857d ago (Edited 5857d ago )

lol, the video is about forcing the content shown on the PlayStation 3 at a certain resolution. So when you uncheck certain resolutions you're stating that your TV doesn't support that. So in other words everything is forced to 1080p.

With everything on automatic it's a little different. For example if your TV supports 1080p that means it supports 1080i or 720p / 720i, 480p / 480i. So when putting in an SD (Standard Definition) DVD in a TV that supports 1080p it'll be in 480p / 480i. This will cause it to look not as clear if it were to be on a TV with a Native Resolution of 480p / 480i.

This is when most people say they don't see the difference with Blu-ray and regular DVDs. So by unchecking certain resolutions you're forcing content to be in 1080p / 1080i resolution since your TV doesn't support it. It's like playing Crysis on an CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor you'll only see the difference with an upgrade.

For native resolution for people who don't know it means the highest resolution supported. Anything higher will mean it won't look at sharp as it would at it's native resolution.

I have no idea what the hell is Kmart but I've never seen that in Toronto. It must be where you shop or something.

Eldon35856d ago

@ Some one plays, I had a hard time trying to find your arguments in all that incoherent rambling. You make no sense, you must work for GameStop if not K-Mart, or Target.
Props to Silellak for spelling it out clearly.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5856d ago (Edited 5856d ago )

lol, you people name places I've never seen or heard of before, where the hell is that in Toronto. With "Silellak" he's stating that the PlayStation 3 will be standard definition (SD) if the TV doesn't support it. Which will only happen if you reset you PlayStation 3 settings to fit that TV. If you have a PlayStation 3 and it's set on HD (High Definition) settings it won't display on an SD set / TV.

So when the PlayStation 3 downscales because of the TV not supporting HD the whole console down scales. The XMB (cross media bar), movies, games, everything. So I was stating that if it down scales you would know, everything will look "big" / "different." So stating that it will down scale to 480p because your TV dosn't support 1080p makes no sense. The option wouldn't be there if the TV doesn't support it.

So the person in the video has an HD set that supports 1080p / 1080i which means it also supports 720p / 720i, and 480p / 480i. So by unchecking 720p / 720i and 480p / 480i it will force content to be in a higher resolution (1080p / 1080i). These options wouldn't be there if your TV didn't support it (1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p, 480i). With that said if you have this set to be foced at 1080p / 1080i and you move your PlayStation 3 to a none-HD TV it won't display. You would have to reset your console, this is what I was stating, that you would know if it downscales.

To reset your console's resolution since it won't display (anything) on the screen you have to turn it on the console by holding the "on button" for 5 seconds. When you do this it will be in 480p / 480i (or whatever the native resolution is) for everything and the options won't be there no more (1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i).

Legion5856d ago (Edited 5856d ago )

Wrong again SOP. Just because a TV supports 1080P does not mean that every resolution beneath it will work too. As an example: I have a few HD TV's and one of my earlier wide screens does not support. 720P. (yes, odd but it was early in HD tech and I figured that I only needed the 2 resolutions... who would use the middle 720P as the standard? haha)

If I have all my 3 settings for HD checked on my system (as supported) then when I put in a game that is 720P native it will NOT appear on my TV. Because you have told your system that it will run at that resolution even though the TV will not support it. I have to ensure that the 720P resolution is not checked on my system as a viable resolution for the console that I have hooked to that TV.

Now what happens when I put a native resolution 720P native media into my system and it plays on my system? Does it magically upscale to 1080P and add pixels that before never existed? Not really, it just repeats pixels so that the image formats correctly to a 1080P screen. This gives the illusion of being 1080P but is not actually. You are getting the pixels but it is more a blurred montage of pixels to accomodate the areas that would be missing. And as long as the screen is not too large then it will appear seemless and actually look clearer to the human eye. But get a larger display and you will notice the difference between native resolution versus upscaling to a higher resolution.

Not saying that you are wrong on your point of needing to change the PS3 settings to go from an HD TV to a standard definition set (politicaly correct term for those non-HD people...ha) just that your verbiage on upscaling is a bit whacked. More so in your first post then the others. French might be your native language? Maybe that is why when you are upscaling to English that it is not as clear as native english speakers? You just think it is? lol

p.s. I believe that Kmart was bought out by Zellers in Canada.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5856d ago

Now you're stating that a 1080p TV won't support lower resolutions. I consider that bogus if you don't mention a brand and specific model. What you just explained was upscaling in simple terms it's just making content fit the entire screen. The rest is just blabber and ignorance.

SiLeNt KNighT5855d ago

actually he is right. many older HD televisions would not support certain resolutions. in fact some older HD television would not support even 480i/p. you maybe familiar with the tech of today but when HD TV's first came out they were very different and you had to make sure the tv supported the resolution you wanted. now with modern processors it easy for the tv to scale the image to many different resolutions.

on a side note, although you are "blurring" the image by repeating pixels when upscaling, the pixel count is higher so the question becomes is the blurring effect of adding pixels better or worse than the lower native resolution. to simply say there will be no difference doesnt make sense. on my 47" tv i can definitely tell a difference for the best.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5854d ago (Edited 5854d ago )

I find that really hard to believe so if pixels were people and TVs were Canada's Wonderland rides this would happen: So roller coasters in the 90s can fit up to 50 people (native resolution) but only 25 people want to ride. So in other words the 25 people can't ride because you must have a full roller coaster to start. Now in the 20th century if 25 people want to ride on a 50 seater ride it can now happen.

I believe that the picture would be smaller than the TV size but I find it hard to believe monitors / TVs couldn't support lower resolutions. Since native means highest it would only make sense that the other pixels could be used and others won't. Like wide screen support on a normal TV would have black bars on top and bottom of the screens. Some SD(Standard Definition) DVDs back than would only have that mode and wouldn't have full screen and nowadays they support both or only full screen.

Shouldn't this be called "How to run any PS3 game at 1080p"?

Also, shouldn't it really be in the tip section instead of a news article?

Also, isn't it obvious the author just added "GTA4" to the description in order to generate more hits for this article?

Scottama5857d ago

No, if the game doesn't support 1080p, it'll just be downscaled to 480p or (in my case) 576p.

JUST for YOU

Swedish gaming mag Gamereactor said that there are MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the 2 version

http://www.gamereactor.se/r...
Swedish Gamereactor mentioned in their 10/10 review that they were pretty surprised regarding the difference between the PS3 and 360-versions. The PS3-version features better colours, contrast, load times and what looks to be better resolution textures. The game also looks sharper and has a more stable fps.

IGN

http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud".

X360 version has FR dips too . more frequent than the PS3 version
"Past GTA titles have had mild-to-serious framerate issues and technical glitches, because the games were trying to do far more than the PlayStation 2 could handle. While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing. "

http://www.n4g.com/NewsPend...

"PS3 version looks slightly more vibrant and sharp "

GAMESRADAR

http://www.gamesradar.com/x...

"Occasional pop-up".........ONLY IN X360 version of GTA4

http://xs226.xs.to/xs226/08...

So happy that i own a PS3

GAMESRADAR also confirms that PS3 version is SUPERIOR

"While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are functionally identical, the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic. If you're looking to compare Accomplishments with your Achievement-hoarding friends, though, forget it - GTA IV ignores these half-assed consolation prizes altogether. PS3 owners also have to put up with a nearly eight-minute installation the first time they start the game, which puts the normally slower Blu-ray load times on par with the Xbox 360 version. (That is, unless it's running on a 360 with no hard drive, which we're told will face much longer loads.)"

Well, you were not really right about it. Actually the 360 version runs better. It can even arrive at 40fps time to time.
But yes, for the graphics, the PS3 version is better. But the frame-rate is less good than on X360.

ElementX5857d ago (Edited 5857d ago )

By the end of July I'll own another PS3 so what will be your excuse then?

BTW the release of GTA4 drove 360 sales also. The question is, how many new PS3 owners also purchased GTA4 at the same time?

MS doesn't need to worry about MGS4, the last MGS same sold under 4 million copies. Even Gears of War, a new IP, sold more. So much for proven franchises.

I don't underestimate MGS4, but I don't overestimate it, either. It's a proven franchise, however the last one didn't do so well with 120 million PS2s out there. Only 3.7 million? That's a low average.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to buy MGS4 with the PS3, however I don't expect it to break any records.

So um...just because the last one didn't do as well as MGS2 and MGS, that means that MGS4 won't be a hit? MGS3 still sold but not as good as the first two. Still, MGS4 will be a blockbuster. I know plenty of people who are buying PS3's just for that game. Kojima has been known for bringing the best of the best so I have some confidence he won't disappoint.

And my advice to you is to not underestimate.

He's a genius.

"I agree but the ps3 fangirls do that for every 360 game and continue after its out. Unless the rare occasion it comes out on the ps3 a year later then they love it."

Um...don't group Sony fans together with the ones who go over the top. I never underestimated ANY of the 360 games. Gears of War, in my opinion is action-packed but the graphics are nothing to brag about. Ninja Gaiden 2 is going to a kick ass game and I'm not underestimating it. I like the 360 library but I don't trust the console or where it came from.

Don't confuse rational PS3 fans with the rabid psychos okay?

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken19d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker19d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6919d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
