1UP Previews Guilty Gear 2: Overture

1UP writes: "Imagine that the fifth Street Fighter game has been revealed, only it's an on-rails shooter in the vein of Panzer Dragoon. While ridiculous to think about, that's the situation we have with Guilty Gear 2: Overture. Since the Guilty Gear X games had, well, an "X" in their names, they apparently weren't the real follow-ups to the original 1997 Guilty Gear. GG2O is a canonical follow-up, and rather than being a one-on-one fighter, it's a hybrid of real-time strategy games and third-person hack-and-slashers like Dynasty Warriors.

The single-player story takes place several years after the events of the original Guilty Gear game, and focuses on Sol Badguy, one of the main protagonists of the series, who is now a drifter roaming the land with his apprentice, Sin. Sin looks a lot like GG's other hero, Ky Kiske, but Ky is actually elsewhere in the world, now a king whose land is under attack by unknown hostile creatures. Sol runs into the weird enemies too, and meets up with a spirit named Izuna, who becomes a second companion and teaches Sol how to defeat and harness the power of these foes".

GUILTY GEAR 2 -OVERTURE- - PC Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:

I am a huge, huge fan of the Guilty Gear fighters. Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is one of the prettiest fighting games ever, and was an absolute favorite title of mine last year on PC. I am also a fan of blending game genres, but some combinations go together better than others, and while there are things about GUILTY GEAR 2 -OVERTURE- that I really enjoyed, the genres did not blend together quite as seamlessly as I had hoped.

Guilty Gear 2: Overture Review (Steam) I Hey Poor Player

Hey Poor Player's Adam Foster writes: "Guilty Gear 2: Overture is a difficult game to recommend. There’s definitely something here, but the individual elements aren’t well executed enough for fans of either genre (or even both genres) to get much out of it. On the other hand, there’s definitely something here: It’s just weird enough to be a novel experience, and the multiplayer is engaging enough that if the community holds up, it could be a good time. If you’re just looking for a fun single-player experience to knock out over a weekend, though, I’d look elsewhere."

GG2 had was such a strange direction for the series, I was already weirded out by Isuka which tried to be a 2D Smash brothers. At least the music was still on point especially the tracks Ride On Time and Diva.
