The Most Graphically Impressive PlayStation 3 Game, Explained And Expanded

MTV Multiplayer writes: "Unless you've downloaded the expansion pack to the downloadable PS3 twin-stick shooter "Super Stardust HD," you will have a hard time convincing me that it's not the most graphically-impressive game on Sony's machine.

And, yes, I've played "GTA IV." I've seen "Killzone 2." But nothing quite blows me away like a level of Endless on the $5 "SSHD" expansion called "Solo Pack."

What exactly have the game's Finnish developers at Housemarque accomplished?

They've doubled the base game's output of 10,000 objects on the screen.
They believe they've almost maxed the PS3 graphics chip.
And now they're thinking about making music-based levels and revealing to Multiplayer other expansions they have in the works.
Read on for more on all of that, from a developer that is pushing the PS3 to impressive lengths ..."

is that it can be even better.

Kleptic5841d ago

definitely the best arcade game on the PSN...I don't have the expansion yet, been playing too much Cod 4 and now with GTAIV I probably still will wait to get it...

I definitely will buy it sooner or later though...

sonarus5841d ago

All i really want is multiplayer. Is the solo add on worth it? Its a fantastic game but no online multiplayer was very dissapointing

Close_Second5841d ago (Edited 5841d ago )

...is the only reason to buy the add-on. All the other solo modes are pretty weak and don't have much replay value.

Endless soon becomes a screen full of destruction and nothing gives more pleasure than shooting your way to a tower and then using boost to destroy it which causes a chain reaction that destroys everything on the planet surface.

Only minor gripe re: endless is that the frame rate struggles ever so slightly on occassion. Doesn't effect gameplay but you do notice it when the screen is full of enemies and explosions.

Bomber is fun and very strategic, and the Time attack levels give you all five planets all over again with all new patterns. Survival is mind-numbing, but the entire expansion gives you more than double the total content of the original game imho.

“over 10,000 active objects with physics and collisions and over 75,000 particles simulated and drawn @60fps.”]

that alot of stuff... and at 60fps.

Masta_fro5841d ago

"We probably draw about twice the number of objects compared to the original game. We are pretty close to maxing out the RSX, but in our next game we will still push the chip more. Currently we do not use SPUs to pre-process the geometry for RSX — that will make a major difference. I estimate that we can further boost the graphics performance by 50%."

DrakenSilverwing5840d ago

Exactly!! just imagine what it will be when they use the SPU's!! (accually it's hard to imagine) It looks amazing already!

So do I . I put it off for too long and it looks really good. Maybe when I stop playing GTA4, then Haze, and MGS4 I will have a small time frame before all the fall nd winter blockbusters come out.

games4fun5841d ago

i dont like buying dlc or even online games it just seems too good of a game not to i played the demo its fun heck i still have it on my ps3 and play it every so often

RacingX5841d ago

I.... H I G H L Y recommend this game, and the expansion is only better, from the chaos of endless, to the very strategic bomber, this is a superb game, add in the fact you can custom soundtrack too, makes it crazy good, rocking to Soundgarden, Killswitch engage etc while playing...Jenga! As much as I love Geo Wars, this is THE best arcade title...IMHO

kalistyles5841d ago

Kleptic, you have the game, but you'll wait to get the DLC. Why? its only 5 bucks. It wont burn a hole in your pocket. The expansion is great. Check it out.

Yoma5841d ago (Edited 5841d ago )

"Multiplayer: How close did you come to maxing the PS3’s capabilities for this type of game, in terms of the amount of objects and effects the system was able to render?

Kuittinen: We got enough stuff going to make the game design a reality and there was no further need to optimize the engine. If we would have needed more stuff on screen we could have done it, but it would have required a fairly major code restructuring and some new engine elements."

Awesome!!!

I plan to snag Stardust VR soon. It is on PSN sale for cheap.

FTLmaster1108d ago

Do it! It’s a seriously addictive experience. Housemarque is the master of modern arcade classic gameplay. Curious to see how Returnal turns out tbh.

Knushwood Butt1108d ago

Thanks. Downloaded it and will be playing it shortly.

Pre-ordered Returnal too.

P_Bomb1108d ago

Loved Alienation. Good co-op!

Knushwood Butt1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Yep, had a lot of fun playing it with my kids. Although they always fight over the drops.

Housemarque licenses Unreal Engine 4 for a new and unannounced title

Finland’s longest standing game development studio, Housemarque, today announced that it is licensing Unreal Engine 4 and moving away from its own in-house technology for future projects, including a soon-to-be-announced title.

TheOttomatic912335d ago

Damn it sucks they won't be doing any SP games anymore.

arkard2335d ago

Agreed, I found d their games to be fun and enjoyable... To bad I seem to be the minority.

TGG_overlord2335d ago

Well, I haven't played all of their games, but "Nex Machina" is pretty darn cool imo.

BrianOBlivion2335d ago

I didn't read that. I've read that while they are planning to expand into multiplayer, the only thing they've decided to give up on is the top-down arcade shooter style of games because the last couple have sold in decreasing amounts.
Too bad for me as I've enjoyed most of their games. Now I feel bad that I didn't buy Matterfall but I just didn't like the addition of platforming into the mix.
I haven't read anywhere that those MP games wouldn't include SP.

TGG_overlord2335d ago

- Ah, now I got what @TheOttomatic91 meant with "Damn it sucks they won't be doing any SP games anymore.". Well, to be fair, "Matterfall" isn't exactly one of their better titles...

Einhander19712334d ago (Edited 2334d ago )

Um don't expect anything good from these guys anymore.

Atticus_finch2334d ago

IDK what to expect. Me and my GF love HM hopefully they keep making couch coop games.
