MasonicGamer: The original SoulCalibur for the Dreamcast is in my opinion one of the finest fighting games ever created, actually it’s one of the finest games period. As much as everyone loves to rave on about Street Fighter II, SoulCalibur back in 1999 was a game that made Street Fighter look like a dinosaur by comparison. I had always dabbled in various fighting games throughout the 90′s but it wasn’t until SoulCalibur that I actually sat down and decided to “master” one.
SoulCalibur was the type of game that simply had everything, it was the gift that kept on giving. Long after Sega announced it wouldn’t be making anymore consoles, that SoulCalibur disc kept on spinning inside my Dreamcast. It had amazing visuals, a killer soundtrack, easy to learn yet hard to master gameplay and a stupid amount of additional content.
GB: "We take a look at 15 amazing games that had the perfect length."
Pretty good list. Botany Manor would be the newest addition that encapsulates that title.

There are different games. Some have gamplay at it highest priority, some have the story, some have the replay value and choices... There are a lot of different game experiences.
It is laughable that just now graphics does not have anything to do with that experiene. We have had many games of that type over time. This is just the one that have come closest to feel like playing an actual movie. Just look the the Digital foundry walkthrough it is a masterpiece in that perspective and hence wrth trying. But yes do not do it for the gameplay - but that was never the goal of this experience.
They don't make games like this anymore.
Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.
I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.
Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.
Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!
I was there when the series first started and I was among the few who appreciated its offerings even more than Tekken or any other fighter at the time, and I too have stories.
but I'm only here to say that I agree with you, Namco is not doing the game the proper justice its fans deserve, the kind of justice that put the game on the map the first place.
I hope your voice with countless others are carried to Namco's ears.
SoulCalibur for the Dreamcast was an amazing game. Graphics, gameplay, just everything was there. The last soul i bought was soulcalibur iv but i still have fun on it with friends. It really is a shame that they are just throwing one of the greatest fighting games ever to the side :/
nice article... shame about the relative decline of the Soul Calibur series. I loved SC1 and 2 and I really like 4... 3 wasn't that bad to me but its my least favorite in the series.
Hopefully (though I won't hold my breath) SC returns to form in the XB1 PS4 gen.
Daishi's twitter account is dead now. Maybe Namco fired him.
Harada must be mad that SCV sold more than TTT2 (which is a superb game too, though)
