Kombo: Metal Gear Online Beta Impressions

Hideo Kojima seems to have an obsession with pleasing gamers. First, he announces that MGS4 has an online component. Then, he announces it's a separate online action game, Metal Gear Online, which will be bundled for free with MGS4. Finally, to top it all off, Kojima Productions & Konami announce that those who pre-ordered MGS4 before a certain time would gain access to a private beta of MGO. Well, after what seems like eons of eternal wait, the beta has finally arrived. How is it? What is it like?

In a word, awesome.

I enjoy playing the beta. It is really good and I hope the real game will be even better.

It sounds alot like a third person COD4 game. I love the perks system and I think we will start to see it as an after thought on multi-players from now on. Kinda like the auto heal feature.

Well alot of people are going to flame me or disagree. But i don't really like it. If the controls are any indacation of how the single player will play then i will either sell my copy or cancel my pre-order. To me the controls are awful, I spent 6 hours with the controls and i still do not like them. I understand it is a beta and things might change. I hope it does for my sake.

I played the beta. The controls sucks, graphics just OK, COD4 owns this game. Until something can compete with COD4 on graphics and controls I wouldn't buy it

The controls don't suck, your just not playing with them correctly.

When I first started with the beta I was the same way. Mainly because I tired to play this game like Warhawk or CoD4, and if you do that all your asking for is a lesson on how to get killed spawn after spawn after spawn.

This game is more on getting the drop on your opponent and taking him out before being found out. If you go in there with a CoD4 mindset you are going to lose alot.

The one thing I don't like about this game at all though is the Close-quarter combat. Since the controls are set with a more slow-pace action in mind, when things get hairy, when up close and personal the controls often let you down.

This is not CoD4 or Warhawk or even Halo and should not be played as such and if you do then you only have yourself to blame.

Agreed, when I first started playing I was confused, but now I don't even want to play COD4 anymore and I just bought the new map pack. MGO FTW

I am basing nothing off of COD4, that would be plain stupid to do so. MGO is a different type of game and has different play mechanic's. But even so i still do not like it. That's great that alot of people are enjoying it, wish i could say the same. =(

Cod4 is great dont get me wrong but i feel it is outdone in teamwork, cqc, weapon options and map layout. However the controls since they allow you to do much more than in cod4 take a little bit to get used to but anyone that comes to term with them has expressed their love for the game. Graphically cod4 still has the advantage but then again anybody remember the halo 3 beta? the graphics improved a lot in the final version which no doubt will hapen here.

I have a feeling that the major response coming back from this beta is... "zOMG TEH SLOW!!11" - they may choose to speed up the characters' movement a little for the final release. I've not heard about any control issues for MGS4 in previews though, and it's meant to be the same control scheme in MGO. Maybe it just doesn't work so well for online?

In order to run faster you have to upgrade your skill. The default speed makes you run like you have a load of bricks in your pants. I'm enjoying the demo as I get use to the play style. Ashame that most people don't use their mics and work together though. Playing as snake is fun. How do you make him invisible or is it when your camo says 99% he is to the other players?

I, like a few of you, didn't like it a lot at first, but after like 3 matches I adjusted and quickly realized "this isn't cod4." You have to play differently. I wouldn't say it's better than CoD4, but it's deffinitly very good. The preview on that site described it very well.

COD4 is cool but, I'm yet to play a game that requires teamwork. Even though you're playing Team Deathmatch on COD4, you're not playing for the team. Everyone goes out there to get their kills (sometimes at the cost of a teammate) and as long as they're positive at the end of the match, all is well.

Finally, we've got a game where teamwork isn't just supported, but it's stressed. I'm gonna like this game. It'll be a change from monotony.
