CD Projekt: PS4 is a little more complicated than X1

Balázs Török, Lead Engine Programmer at CD Projekt, explained that while PS4 is easier than PS3 for developers, it's still a bit harder than Xbox One.

Just give us a dam good game soon, cant wait for Witcher 3. Witcher 2 was amazing, my favorite RPG of 2011.

come_bom3814d ago

Well, this is a surprise. CD Projekt says that the X1 is easier to develop for then the PS4, when most developers say otherwise.

thekhurg3814d ago

Most likely just under some kind of contract with Microsoft. The Witcher 3 was shown at the Xbox One E3 event after all.

H0RSE3814d ago

It's always gotta be a contract, or a conspiracy or some backroom deals with MS, right?.....

NewMonday3814d ago

he means the XBone API's are more familiar, but the difficulty he will face like every other developer is getting the best performance out of the XB1.

if they choose the easy way then the XBone version will look much worse than it should.

SynGamer3814d ago

I call bullshit. Aside from Xbox first party developers, almost ever third-party and indie has said the PS4 is easier to develop for...

solidboss073814d ago

Perhaps something got lost in translation? Complicated it will be, especially when trying to utilise the GPU Compute capabilities ect that nobody is really showing us at the minute. For more traditional methods we have already seen 720p vs 1080p. Seems most developers say that PS4 is simpler, as Sony have stated. But for longevity PS4 has a good architecture to exploit with time. Processes will be developed.

nveenio3814d ago

"Look at us. We can't reveal more game right now. But LOOK AT US!!!"

^ That's all I hear.

Prototype_79L3814d ago

Especially with the ESRAM + DDR combo compared to the unified GDDR RAM.

Imalwaysright3814d ago

inveni0 Obviously you never played TW1 and TW2. The people that played those games more than likely can't wait to get their hands on TW3 because the 1st 2 games are hands down some of the the best RPGs ever made and I'm not exaggerating. Witcher fans are well aware of who CD Projekt RED are. This studio certainly doesn't need to talk about consoles to get attention, their games do that for them.

decrypt3814d ago

@iamalwaysright

I played Witcher 1 with graphics mods, that game even for today can look amazing with mods. Probably one of the best looking RPGS out there with mods.

MiloGarret3814d ago

Probably because they haven't been paid off by Sony.

LordMaim3814d ago

@MiloGarret: You're probably the only Microsoft advocate that believes that Sony has more money than Microsoft.

plaZeHD3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

@HORSE
Turns out they are in a contract with MS.

AngelicIceDiamond3814d ago

@Bom

The ESRAM is making things complicated for now. But I don't recall any official statements of devs stating anything about the ESRAM's use.

Or devs stating the PS4 is much easier to develop for then X1. I have not seen any devs make that official statement.

I've heard they're similar to develop for.

Unless you can link of those statements.

ProjectVulcan3814d ago

They are a PC developer, DirectX.

Basically, Xbox One is very much like that sharing tools and methods.

Therefore it is perfectly reasonable for this PC developer to understand what they know better, than PS4 which is a different programming environment for them.

TheGrimReaper00113814d ago

I gues it depends from developer to developer?
Either way, I can't wait for the Witcher 3
"The Witcher 3 is fucking awesome! Kiss my balls."

Saigon3814d ago

@AngelicIceDiamond

It has been stated but not officially as this recent claim from CP. Edge wrote several articles around this and the latest from what I remember is:

http://www.edge-online.com/...

They also wrote another article stating how developer friendly the PS4 console is

http://www.edge-online.com/...

At the same time, though in the first article, they state how the Xbone does have some advantages.

Overall I think it is based on the tools that developers use when creating a game. Some may find Sony platform easier based on their tools while others may find MS structure better. CP may be using tools that benefit the Xbone rather than the PS4.

Also I think CP is waiting for the cloud integration that we are still wondering about to see how much of an increase this function can perform on games. I understand their justification in the released performance, from the other article posted recently, but I believe it is based on their cloud assumptions. With all of the recent tear-downs of the Xbone, that have happened, there is no secret hidden anywhere. The cloud is the only answer and it is still unproven.

nypifisel3814d ago

Well anyone with basic programming knowledge would disagree. I don't really understand how the XBO would be easier?!

Murad3814d ago

Well, it is an x86 arch isn't it? So technically, it should be just programming for a simple 64 bit machine.

Ju3814d ago

Saigon, like vulcan said above, they are primary PC developers and as such probably all their code is based on Windows and DirectX APIs. Those are mostly available on the XBox while they are not on the PS4. PS4 uses a posix layer and custom Sony APIs, this includes the rendering API (not OpenGL). There is a DirectX "Macro" wrapper, but it won't perform at best just using with exiting code. This is where it is "easier" for them. Doesn't help that they will learn soon enough that while easier, it doesn't mean it will perform at best without hand optimizing. Core affinity and GPU optimization will be needed for the XBO as well, otherwise the PS4 will run this home yet again.

But yes, if you have a large PC/Windows code base you can bring it over relatively quickly to the XBO.

corvusmd3814d ago

It's because of the style of game that it is. It's not a linear game. It's a dynamic open world game.

L0L_WUT3814d ago

I think someone just receive a check from the competition ;)

Fluke_Skywalker3814d ago

I don't pretend to know about this stuff like some others. But I read similar comments from other devs, I think it was the guys who made NFS. They said that basically the PS4 isn't "more difficult" to develop for, it's just different. Basically he said that the Xbox one version is essentially exactly the same as the PC version (in terms of programming not performance obviously) because they are both DX based whereas the PS4 is not.

So it's not harder to develop for, just different to what some devs and particularly a mainly PC dev such as CDPR will be used to.

nosferatuzodd3814d ago

dont sweat it they have a fat check from microsoft they are the same one who said microsft are going to release hidden power for the xbone lol

Xsilver3814d ago

I bet Money it Runs Better on PS4 come at me people.

starchild3814d ago

I bet money it will look and run best on PC.

Dude what r u saying this game is the one i really want because it's an open world where u get alternate endings, do not compare it with witcher 2 though it's good but compare it with that fuckable game known as "SKYRIM ONLINE" where u have to pay monthly subscription and yet to me the character models have not improved,Yes,Yes i know about modding but i thing the game is going to be shit i don't know why they r so stupid to implement paid subscription wellit does't matter i am not going to buy it instead i will by this best game THE WITCHER 3, He is like solid snake in the western world.

Alexious3814d ago

"SKYRIM" (Elder Scrolls) Online won't have modding, as it's an MMORPG. And the least of its problems is the paid subscription, unfortunately.

I'm happy that CD Projekt decided to go with open world this time, The Witcher 2 felt very constrained in terms of locations.

Aggesan3814d ago

So, if PS4 is more complicated, does that mean the divide between PS4 and Xbone games will grow even larger as the devs learns its quirks?

Gamer19823814d ago

It may be easier for one to develop for than the other because of there knowledge base not because the consoles harder to develop for. They might be used to language and tools that xbox uses compared to other devs as other unlike most devs they dont make many games. So please people stop taking this as biased in any one way or another. Why does every dev have to have an agenda?

oof463814d ago

Plus, to be fair, he did say it was only a bit.

It wasn't like he said, "Oh my Gawdzzz Sony! WTF!!!!"

shuuwai3814d ago

Meh, even though I have a PS4,I still pre-order this game on the PC. I'm having lots of fun with NFS, FIFA on the PS4. I was hoping for Watch Dog. ;-(

Anyone know notice PC games price are par with console games.;-/

Alexious3814d ago

He specified it himself, of course X1/PC DX is a very similar environment while Sony has libGCM, based on OpenGL.

bunfighterii3814d ago

Cyberpunk is the game I can't wait to play

Alexious3814d ago

Yeah, I hope it'll release in the first half of 2014, but I'm not sure.

JsonHenry3814d ago

They are used to DX and the MS style software layers. Of course the PS4 which won't be using DX is going to be more difficult for them. They didn't say it was insane or incredibly hard like the CELL was last gen. And they are a fantastic developer who hasn't let the community down yet either. I don't see why everyone is giving them so much flak for this.

moparful993814d ago

I think behavior like this is derived out of the previous generation where the PS3 was lambasted for its complex structure by the media daily. It created this "Us against the world" mentality for early adopters of the PS3.. I know because I was one of them and it has had a profound impact on my reaction to articles like this one to this very day.. I placed an awful lot of trust and faith in Sony and was treated like a third class citizen on this site for several years..

linkenski3814d ago

Even though I think the Witcher games overshadow Bioware's Dragon Age by coming out in the same year, (heck there'll be a short month span between W3 and DA:I as well) I'm just happy that 2014 might be one of the best years of RPG in recent memory. I can't wait to get both games.

Back-to-Back3814d ago

Ps4 uses x86 architecture. How and the f*ck could that be hard for any game developer. x86 is so much easier than what devs had to develop on last gen.

DeadlyFire3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

Its the graphics API.

PS4 uses PSSL while XB1 uses DirectX 11.1. A PC developer like CD is very accustomed to DirectX. So there is your answer. On PS4 they just have to learn new ways to do the same things with the different API. They are more than capable of doing so. Give them a few months.

starchild3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

The Witcher 2 is in my top 3 games of all time. Absolutely love it and can't wait for Wild Hunt. I'm also a huge cyberpunk fan and I am so excited to see what CD Projekt Red do with Cyberpunk 2077.

solid_snake36563814d ago

Poor guys, they probably aren't used to working on a superior console.

sssb3814d ago

yea u right i'm not buying ps4 till i see this game in stores shelf cuz at moment the witcher 3 is main reason to get the console, as u said the witcher 2 was pretty good i keep playing more and more when released in 2011, i really can't wait for the witcher 3 wild hunt.

Crossbones3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

Can't wait for the game.

amodestoccasion3814d ago

Agreed! I'm excited to see what CD Projekt do with Cyberpunk too, because I'd love to see their talents in a sci-fi setting.

Alexious3814d ago

Same. I might be actually be a little bit more excited for Cyberpunk 2077, though I won't say that loudly.

kickerz3814d ago

Yea me 2. Love those type of games. I think it will be awesome no matter what platform you get it on

sigfredod3814d ago

Untapped power here, as said by Cerny long ago, easy to develop hard to master

MazzingerZ3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

If that's true ( what W3 devs said) why PS4 has already more PC exclusive ports on it's way from small studios? According to Cerny you get a PC graphic engine running on PS4 just in 2 months compared to 8-10 months on PS3

Only MP dev talking positive about X1 lately...I see som X1 timed exclusive Witcher 3 deal coming... Probably DLC

sigfredod3814d ago

is possible, with $$$$ you can get many things, but the raw power is still there and cannot be change until next gen

I_am_Batman3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

Yeah porting PC games will be pretty easy for the most part. At least as long as the raw power of the PS4 is enough. If you want to use PS4's full potential you'll have to use the GPU for computing tasks which isn't that easy anymore. However GPGPU can be used on PC as well and it won't be easier there either.

Also the PS4 architecture has more tweaks to seperate it from PC hardware than the Xbox One. Since CD Project have mainly worked on PC it probably needs a bit more time to adapt to the PS4 architecture.

CD Project is a very ambitious dev team and I guess they want to get the best possible result for either console.

awi59513814d ago

They use direct x heavily thats why xbox is easier i bet.

gear3814d ago

Dude they have not told the specific requirements for the PC i currently have Core i5 AMD Radeon 7000 Series,4GB of RAM,windows 7 os

Alexious3814d ago

To be honest, they say it's just "a bit" more complicated. I think they mean that with X1 obviously the tools are the same as DirectX on PC since it's always Microsoft, of course Sony has a different API, but it's a powerful API from what I've read.

worldwidegaming3814d ago

Zero Uptapped power! x86 is already mastered!
If all you did was "Cell" programming for 7 years then "Yes" but this is not cell and its "x86"
this requires zero time to master as there are so many programmers with years and years of experience!
Not to mention all of that ram to just be as lazy as you want!

At this point your either going to be a great programming company or a crappy one. These companies need to be "ALL IN!"

CocoWolfie3814d ago

hope thats not a bad thing, hopefully its worth it.. good luck to them anyway i shall be one of those ps4 owners who buys their game

Mike134nl3814d ago

Performance will only get better it might only take a little bit of extra time.

Statix3814d ago

He's probably just talking about Microsoft's development tools being more Windows-like, and therefore is a more familiar environment for former PC developers. Sony's toolset is probably somewhat different, and requires them to learn the software.

Ju3814d ago (Edited 3814d ago )

...and APIs. You can just throw DirectX at it, while you can't on the PS4.

All ends when you actually have to do HW performance tuning per platform. It ain't a PC.

Sony did a phenomenal job with their latest iteration of devtools for PS4.

forcefullpower3814d ago

Why do I get a feeling money hatting incoming for witcher 3.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave33d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan33d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
