Quicksave - Metal Gear Online Beta Impressions

Quicksave writes:
"Metal Gear Online is not Call of Duty. It's not like Gears of War. Or is it like Warhawk. Metal Gear Online is its own thing and the sooner you can accept the game's rules and mechanics the better. I made the mistake of believing this game was Call of Duty 4 in the third person and how wrong I was. MGO has its share of quirks and unorthodox conventions, but after putting in approximately 7+ hours into it: MGO is growing on me."

I agree with this article, for the most part. I wasn't into the Beta at first, but it's definitely grown on me as well. I wasn't impressed with the graphics at first, for one, but the more I play, the more detail I notice, and the more interactivity with the environments I have seen can be done. It's quite impressive. The controls are getting more comfortable, and the skill system is very cool. The aiming system is excellent, with the auto lock-on choice for the newbies and as you get better and want more chances of a headshot and an easy kill, you have the free aim option. If you're good at the free aiming, then you'll whoop anyone's tail who uses the lock-on. But if you're awful at the free aim, you can use the lock-on as a crutch for a while.

The only thing I don't really think I can appreciate is the lack of health regenation. Give me rations as a purchasable item or as something that you can find on the maps, and I'll greatly appreciate it. I think. Actually, I'm still not sure that it's necessary. But maybe.

i havent played this MGO yet, but the others took getting used to. its gonna grow on everyone, trust me they are some of the most unique online experiences out there. just like he said, not COD4, not Gears, just MGO.

SIX5860d ago

Totally agree with you. Have you played the new map and as Snake yet? It's really impressive. I don't know how much getting used to the graphics had to do with it but I think it looks amazing. The Snake model is very impressive and I can't wait to play the single player.

yeah I only noticed the lack of AA on some of the shadows...from the first time I played the beta I thought it was one of the most impressive online games I had seen on a console...visually anyway...

the HDR is way more intense than cod 4, and the textures appear to be better as well...not sure where some are finding it not impressive...its just all the environments so far are urban...

but yeah, I agree...the gameplay is nothing like what I expected...I have only put about 2 hours into the beta so far...but it plays surprisingly well after you get used to the different aiming techniques (once I switched the over the shoulder view to be set with camera position, everything was fine)...it also has a ridiculously awesome character building system...

plus, some awesome mechanics...my favorite being the better you do in a match the more stuff you unlock in real-time...meaning you kill a few guys early on, it unlocks better weapons you can select when you respawn in the same map...no waiting until the lobby for a different game, it happnes right away...

just give some sort of sprint function and I could easily get hooked on it...it just seems so freakin' slow though right now...

Great read. It basically sums up my feelings about MGO, and I'm really on the grind now even though I'll probably stop soon because I don't want to create the ultimate character and then the beta is over...and I have to start from scratch on June 12th.

Or after I beat MGS4 for the 5th time. =p

he's completely right. i believe everyone felt that way at first. but its a great game all in its own. i just wish gta4 didnt come out tomorrow so i can play it more. im sure ill find time for it :)

I was not too full of assumptions or wants when I went into the beta and can say that I came away from it very pleased so far. There is a learning curve but that is to be expected and as for the graphics, they were very well done for a beta and I can only imagine slight changes for the final build. Very well done and to those that were upset with Konami for butchering the beta start, it was all worth the hassle as the game is a great addition to the onlineplay that the PSN has to offer. Mix this with Warhawk and COD4 and you will have more than enough to do until Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 come out.

I agree - my first few games left me frustated. But the game is DEEP, so many options. Getting used to the pace and the control scheme is very difficult but I'm slowly getting used to it. I had a few games on the new map last night and really enjoyed it. You really need to put some serious effort into the game in order to reap it's rewards.

Online services for MGSV:TPP (Xbox 360, PS3) and GZ (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4) to be terminated

Konami has shared an announcement on the official Metal Gear portal site stating that the online services for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be terminated on May 31st of 2022. This only affects the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Both MGSV itself and its multiplayer component Metal Gear Online will be shut down on that date. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will also lose its network service on the same date, but this time it also affects the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.

Don't remind me, my favourite online game of all time :(

Giblet_Head987d ago

It's been brought back with RPCS3, if you're curious to get back into it.

I played this game recently. This is a problem because infiltrating online bases is by FAR the best way to get money.

During the actual game i made a few mill doing story missions, and procuring equipment, but with the online wallet, I had 100m+ in a few hours.

Not to mention you'd need to create online FOBs to max your gear.

Was hoping there would be a next gen patch to make the idroid a little less laggy. Really, a masterpiece of a game.

And that's why online elements in single player games will never be welcomed by me

MasterChief3624987d ago

Remember that the services for Phantom Pain on Xbox One, PS4 and PC are still going to be online. But it is only a matter of time, I suppose.

GhostofHorizon987d ago

Are there any trophies or achievements tied to online?

Dark_Overlord987d ago

Actually 3, Intruder, Deterrence and Disarmament. You have to connect to the online to finish building the Nuke and get the trophy, meaning you can't disarm it either without online.

MetroidFREAK21987d ago

I still need to play these games. I have the PS3 versions

franwex987d ago

The online component is really helpful with online connectivity. You get minerals and stuff while you sleep to build up your base.

MetroidFREAK21987d ago

I don't think I'll get to it before the online service is shut down

Metal Gear Online is back, thanks to custom servers

We’ve seen custom servers bring loads of online PC games back from the dead, and emulation has provided a way for plenty of old console games to live on modern hardware. You probably see where this is going. Yes, a group of enterprising fans have put together custom servers to bring back the PlayStation 3’s take on Metal Gear Online, commonly known as Metal Gear Online 2.

I play MGO 1 still on my Original PS2 still... Online of course

franwex1039d ago

What?
I had no idea we could still play this!

aaronaton1039d ago (Edited 1039d ago )

I play this and I would just say the skill gap is as large as ever. Headshots are key, and most players seems to be able to quickscope anyone from anywhere. This was always a thing on PS3 but it's even more pronounced due to higher frames rates on the rpcs3.

It's the toughest online shooter I've played in a long long time.

What more can Kojima do with this franchise when the saga is pretty much over?

The plot is pretty much wrapped up and Kojima has expressed many times he'd like to put the IP to rest. Anymore titles in the Snake saga would just turn Metal Gear into a zombie franchise..........oh wait!

-Foxtrot2423d ago (Edited 2423d ago )

It's a pre order code aswell

I mean it's bad enough it's Survive but not even a Collectors Edition of it or something

Salt in wound. They're right aswell the other prizes are better
