ATLUS Moves Away From Vita

Yep, Persona: Dancing All Night is the next big title for the Vita. You'd think after the success of Persona 4: Golden, it wouldn't have come to this. But it seems Sega is pulling more string than anyone originally thought. Thank god Persona 5 is coming to PS3.

Atlus always had more prescence on 3DS than Vita. Etrian Odyssey IV and SMTIV were both big titles for them. The Vita had...what? An enhanced port?

jc485733821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

this is going to be the first Persona game on a 3DS, which it's pretty interesting why they made that choice. So far, Persona has appeared mainly on Sony platforms with the exception of Persona 4 Arena, which is multiplatform.

admiralvic3821d ago

It probably has to do with the popularity of the system and the popularity of the series. Persona went from a small, semi popular spin off of SMT, to a series that rivals / surpasses the series it spun off of.

You look at Persona and you see animes, movies, a fighting game spin off, so it's only natural they would give the better selling system better games. There is also Atlus getting close to Nintendo again, since we had SMT 5 on the 3DS, plus FE X SMT coming up for the Wii U.

RedHawk023820d ago

I really hope a better Persona game comes to Vita. I want something like Persona 5 or even Persona Q. A remake of Persona 3 Portable in Vita graphics would be awesome also.

nidhogg3821d ago

You on drugs mate? It wasn't just an enhanced port, it was a greatly re-modified version with lots of effort put into it. However, Can't think of any other exclusive game Atlus gave to the handheld? hint: Dragon's Crown. So given that the 3DS has all these big titles you can think of -- it IS selling well and is a good rpg system to date -- the Vita will have its time too maybe not now but I have a feeling it will have the edge in the rpg business in the future -- especially from Atlus.

Blastoise3821d ago

Persona 4 Golden sold more than Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei IV, with a much much smaller userbase.

I'm sure we'll see more games from them on the Vita

HammadTheBeast3820d ago

Let's not forget Persona 3 Portable on PSP.

wiiuniverse3820d ago

@blastoise
im not downplaying that too much but you have to keep in mind this is persona were talking about, and p4g came out when there want much else to play on vita. SMT 4 has sold well compared to the non persona entries of the franchise, and it came out when there were 3ds games coming out every month.
still, im sure a persona q would sell just as well on vita despite the low userbase.

dont use vgchartz because it not accurate.

vergilxx33820d ago

It does not matter how we call it it's still a port.
And in my opinion vita's time will be in 2014 with soo many games comming like Final Fantasy X , Borderlands 2 and Freedom Wars

Hello everyone, I am the writer for this article. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

tiffac0083820d ago

Sir with all due respect, if you are familiar with the franchise or have done your research. You should know all main Persona titles goes to a console first before getting an enhanced port version on a handheld.

Now, if down the line we do not see a Persona 5 Platinum on the Vita or it gets released on the 3DS or iOS instead. Then your claim can be justified but for now it remains invalid.

Besides I think you have no idea how popular rhythm games are in Japan and Asia and a good portion of them are on the Vita.

jamespetergriff3820d ago

If you read the article, it at no point mentions that Persona 5 should be on Vita at the same time. My point is that it seems Vita owners got the short end of the stick from Atlus as the 3DS gets its own full-blown RPG. Especially when P4G gave people a reason to own the handheld console. This is a step away from the Vita, in my opinion. Vita deserves a more prominent title.

theshonen88993820d ago

Full-blown RPG? From what I can tell, PersonaQ is just a small, cute dungeon crawler. Similar to...oh I dunno Etrian Odessey? ATLUS has chosen to release the spinoff titles on the consoles that make sense to them. Project Diva f is a game so popular that is sold Vita consoles, so they're releasing a game similar to it on the Vita. Hell, the game probably even uses the same engine from Project Diva considering Sega owns ATLUS now.

There is no picking favorites going on here. The idea that Vita is getting the short end of the stick is purely your own opinion. ATLUS and more importantly SEGA is not moving away from the Vita. I think the console choices ATLUS went with made logical sense.

tiffac0083820d ago (Edited 3820d ago )

@jamespetergriff

But the Persona 3DS game is a Sega move not an Atlus one. Its being made by the Etrian Odyssey team.

Same with the dancing game which is being made by the Project Diva team.

I do understand what you are saying about the Vita deserving more but the situation you are trying to imply about Atlus moving away from the Vita is just not the case.

Edit: This is more like Sega trying to milk a popular franchise by creating additional spin-offs (one being a different genre altogether)

Like I said if Persona 5 Platinum does not materialize on the Vita or appears elsewhere. Then you will be right on the money.

Protagonist3820d ago (Edited 3820d ago )

@jamespetergriff

So your argument for "ATLUS Moves Away From Vita"
is because the PS Vita actually gets a game from Atlus???

Persona 4 Golden, Dragon's Crown, Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars and now Persona 4: Dancing All Night begs to differ.

If Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth was announced for the PS Vita, your would probably have argumented the exact same thing.

Why did you even write this so-called article???
did you check with Sega/Atlus??? did they confirm this???

Yeah I did not think so!

CGMagazine3820d ago

Point taken, but I am referring to ATLUS as a developer, not a publisher. I think Persona Q is the sort of spinoff that people want, an RPG with characters you love and a new storyline. Granted Persona 4: Dancing All Night will probably sell a lot of units, but it isn't the flagship title Vita needed and I think Vita owners expected. Atlus was being heralded as a vita savior when p4: golden was released. If you disagree, that is your opinion. But this is mine, and I stand by it. I see releasing some Dancing Game on Vita instead of an rpg that is closer to the series roots is ATLUS saying they show less interest in the Vita as a developer. I wrote this article to give a different viewpoint of the games reveal, and my reactions to it.

Hicken3820d ago

The problem with your article is that the premise isn't supported by fact.

ATLUS hasn't canceled any Vita games, have they? On the contrary, they just announced one. Like the 3DS game, it's a spinoff title, not an original Persona, OR a remake. That said, the core Persona titles have all been on PlayStation home consoles and later ported to handhelds. Hell, this is the first time a Persona game has been on DS at all.

And, as others have noted, rhythm games are VERY popular in Japan, most notably the Hatsune Miku series; the Vita's Persona title is OBVIOUSLY meant to cash in on that.

Now, if there were some shortage of ATLUS titles on Vita, titles already in production were being canceled, or the number of 3DS titles was growing considerably in comparison, the premise might have stood. But none of that is true.

And given the success of P4G(which, if I remember correctly, did even better than the original on PS2- I bought both, by the way- and also did better than the last few ATLUS titles on 3DS combined), it would be silly of them to abandon the system.

Of course, since there's nothing to support that, there's nothing to worry about.

dcj05243820d ago

So PERSONA 5 Portable 2016. That's cool. I geuss.

Hicken3820d ago

What? The hell are you even talking about? We don't know what else ATLUS is gonna put on Vita. P5 will probably get a port after a while, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing they'll put out.

... are you aware of how many franchises ATLUS has their hands in?

vergilxx33820d ago

So in your opinion it doesn't matter what kind of game we get as long as we get one ?
I personaly would pick that P3-P4 remix thing over that dance all night

teflontactics3821d ago

Persona has always made it to the PSVita/PSP as a remake/enhanced port and not an original title.

Persona 5 not hitting the Vita as such is really no surprise - though I would be surprised if we didn't see an enhanced port of Persona 5 hitting the Vita later on.

It's their style of releases, though I don't really agree with it.

thehobbyist3820d ago

Besides that's a teaser not a big trailer with the paragraph of copyright information and all that fun stuff. They could very well be doing a multiple Sony platform launch and just haven't said it yet. Many games have come and gone with only a few platforms at their announcement.

Persona 5: The Crimson - 2016 Winter for PSVITA
Persona 5: HYPER Crimson - 2018 Winter for PS4

porkChop3821d ago

I'm really hoping they do a P5G version for the Vita. Doesn't really need new content though, I just want the game itself. At least if they do a PS4 version I could RP it.

e-p-ayeaH3821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

All the persona games need to return in HD alongside 5.

I still havent played a Persona game i only have a PS3 at the moment.

SoulSercher6203820d ago (Edited 3820d ago )

You can buy P3FES as a PS2 classic for only $10. Perfect starting point.

Inception3820d ago

Just like SoulSercher said, you can buy PS1 & PS2 classic of Persona 1, 2, and 3: FES. I suggest buy P3 FES because right now Atlus gave some discount for the game.

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

What a word vomit, rambling, turd of an article that simply states the obvious. Classic exputer.
