The Co-op Podcast 62: 720p Vs 1080p – Can You Really Tell The Difference?

Gary Swaby at TheKoalition.com writes: Welcome back to episode 62 of The Co-op Podcast. With next-gen upon us we really had to get our hands dirty and address some of the latest controversy surrounding the new consoles. We went around the panel and asked everyone the same question, "What are your thoughts on Call of Duty: Ghosts being 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4?" Shouts outs to @BlastShotz7 on Twitter who asked us the question. Some of us felt like you couldn't really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, and that as a gamer you should just be interested in playing the game. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

It's not just the Xbox One suffering from doubts though, last week a Playstation 4 FAQ revealed that the system wouldn't be able to play MP3's or audio CD's. On top of that the system won't support DLNA. How much of an issue is this? We share our thoughts on the show.

"720p Vs 1080p – Can You Really Tell The Difference?"

The only people downplaying it are people who have never seen a game in native 1080p, don't understand basic math (1920x1080 >1280x720) or have 6 inch televisions.

theBAWSE3842d ago

if your bias media or an xbox fanboy... NO

but I guarantee their eye sight will miraculously see 1080p on forza, then miraculously go bad again once they play the rest of the xbone line up

i've often heard many say that it is more noticeable on certain size sets. i have 2 HDtv's. one is a 42" samsung plasma with native 720p but can display 1080p as well. I assume the tv is upscaling based on the output of the source (ps3/360)

I also have a 47" LG LCD that is native 1080p. My plasma produces a much nicer picture with rich colors and because it is native 720p I run my systems at that res.

I have played a game at native 1080p on my LCD and then played the same game on my plasma at 720p (wipeout HD) and I couldnt really tell a difference.

could it be because of the difference in screen tech? LCD was higher res but it isnt as crisp as plasma or rich in color. that is why i game on my plasma. i will say i tried my plasma at 1080p and couldnt tell a difference between wipeout Hd at either res. Again probably because of native 720p support and upscaled 1080p.

After getting the next gen systems...I really need to invest in a bigger/better gaming tv.

travelguy2k3841d ago

@darth
Your Plasma (720P native) will down convert a 1080p signal to 720p so that it can display it. It cannot show more lines of resolution than the panel physically has. Therefore its not surprising that you do not notice a difference when playing 1080p content on your plasma tv. You may notice slightly more lag though as you tv has to process the signal before displaying, but i doubt its very much.

I love how things have flip-flopped as we move into next gen. Surely I'm not the only one who remembers "better grass in Mafia II on 360!!!" or "better water in RDR on 360!!!" or "better framerate in GTA4 on 360!!!" or "better draw distance in Skyrim on 360!!!" and all of the other countless comparisons (especially the ones done on Digital Foundry).

But now?

Oh, none of that stuff matters. Framerate doesn't matter. Having richer textures and less pop-in doesn't matter. 720p vs 1080p is just a silly comparison, right? Yeah...

Kinda like how Metacritic was "THE GOLD STANDARD" until XBox stopped being on top. Kinda like how number of exclusvies was "THE GOLD STANDARD" until Xbox stopped having the most.

Information Minister3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

Indeed! After nearly a decade of pixel counting and arguing about minor differences in textures or frame rate, suddenly graphics are irrelevant. Just like sales numbers became irrelevant once the PS3 surpassed the 360. What a coincidence!

The hypocrisy in the gaming media can't possibly be underestimated. I bet we can even predict how much advertising each of these websites will get from any specific manufacturer/publisher just by looking at the content of their "articles".

mistertwoturbo3841d ago

Come on now this is just getting ridiculous. 720p to 1080p is a huge difference. I can tell on my 23" pc monitor and I will definitely tell on my 55" samsung.

Playstationologist3841d ago

These same people would probably just be angry at your post but you are 100% right. I used to hear all day that you can't tell the difference and the first time I saw it I was floored. For gaming, NATIVE 1080p is a MASSIVE improvement over 720.

any one with eyes can tell between 720p native and 1080p native
plz stop with this BS already

rbailey3842d ago

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I will be the first to say that people who get nit picky about resolution and expect every game to be 1080p compatible right out of the gate obviously have way too many expectations. If you go back to the launch of the PS3, not every launch title was 1080p natively so again I don't see why anyone would be complaining about this. At the end of the day, PC will still have the BEST quality for virtually every game that isn't an exclusive and thats a proven fact that no one can deny.

KrisButtar3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

"If you go back to the launch of the PS3, not every launch title was 1080p natively so again I don't see why anyone would be complaining about this."

The PS3 launched how many years ago? and it had titles that were native 1080p? I would think that the console gen after the PS3 would surely do a min of 1080p then, if not higher since the gen beforehand could do it with some of their launch titles. Every gen we see an increase in graphics, is it to much to ask to have an increase as well for this upcoming gen.

Honestly before the announcement of the new consoles, I was thinking the resolution was going to be like 1440p for them. Just for the simple fact that when current gen released, the PC already did 1080p back then and for the most part current gen is at 720p.

Recently PC is talking about 4K gaming resolution and knowing that, I thought the new consoles would be a resolution setting or two behind 4K because they are not going to be upgraded or replaced for another 5-10 years from now. To have a console releasing this year that has games at 720p upscaled to 1080p is a piss off. I would think the min would have been 1080p and upscaled from there.

Edit: spelling

All Call of Duty Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Call of Duty has to be the most recognizable franchise on the planet. They didn’t get that way by only making a handful of games.

COD has a long and storied career. Launching as a PC WW2 first-person shooter, Call of Duty has gone through numerous makeovers and been on just about every system. The series has gone through some serious highs and tragic lows. I’ll be looking at each Call of Duty game, the good the bad, and the ugly."

Vanguard better be at the fkn bottom. Can’t believe ppl haven’t eviscerated that game with all its lacking

Minimoth819d ago

Yeah, it's close to the bottom. There are a couple of worse ones. Infinite Warfare definitely deserves its place.

KyRo819d ago

There's a number a lot worse than Vangaurd. It's also a lot better than that car crash Treyarch released before it.

XbladeTeddy819d ago

World at War is my favourite. Didn't know the N-Gage had a Call of Duty.

MadLad819d ago

Same for me.
I was never huge into Call of Duty, but I sunk a lot of time into WaW.
Both the campaign and the multiplayer are on point. Wouldn't mind a remaster.

I quit on CoD for a long while. Though I'm the odd man out that actually really enjoyed the campaign for WWII, being I got it through Humble monthly way back when.

TheLigX819d ago

I really enjoyed the Infinite campaign. Multiplayer... not so much.

Yppupdam819d ago

I agree, The Infinite campaign feels more like it's own thing that they slapped the CoD name on. If it stood on it's own, (sans the CoD name) I think it could have been it's own scifi franchise. And a damn good looking game, to boot. I never bothered to play the multiplayer.

victorMaje819d ago

MW 2019 apart from the desastrous file sizes is way better than AW.

MadLad818d ago

That was one I grabbed for Playstation because it pretty much just came out during the Redbox purge of videogames, and I got it for dirt cheap.

It was great coming home to an update every night, and watching one game eat up almost half my console's memory.

Amplitude819d ago (Edited 819d ago )

Will get disagrees but Infinite Warfare campaign was really good. Decent story, set pieces were amazing and if it didn't have the CoD game on it I'm sure people would have been more into it. Advanced Warfare was alright too. Titanfall 2 was just 1000 times better than both but I enjoyed them for their campaigns. I literally barely gaf about the story I'm in it for the set pieces and 5 hours of being stoned watching cool nonsense happen if I'm in the mood to play a CoD campaign. If I'm looking for a deep plot I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Ghosts was the worst story-wise though lol that cliffhanger ending was so bs.

Also MW 2019 was sick and is one of the best CoD games in yeeeears not sure why it's so low on this dude's list. Campaign was great, multiplayer was great and Warzone was fun for a while. Over it now but shrugs.

Beat the Vanguard campaign too but I can't even remember a single thing about it other than that it felt like it was 45 minutes long. Might be the most forgettable thing I've ever played lol just fully erased from my brain

Wore implementation I've ever seen,.. guess it just does not work all that great on every engine

MarkyMark891780d ago (Edited 1780d ago )

Agree, but this gives me hope that one day Ray Tracing can be a software based feature and not require some type of proprietary hardware to achieve. Software will always outpace Hardware so it could happen, but I feel like its going to take a lot more time to achieve the same level that RTX has already shown glimpses of so far. Really just waiting for Cyberpunk to see if RTX is actually something viable. I think if anybody can truly showcase RTX Features it would be Projekt Red.

zeal0us1780d ago

Too bad it doesn't make Mankind Divided a better game.

starchild1780d ago

It doesn't need to, the game was already fantastic, imo.

zeal0us1780d ago

Human Revolution was a better game and not to mention longer.

isarai1780d ago

Reshade is not raytracing, its a screen space post processing effect. Thats like calling SSAO "global illumination"
