Planetside 2 on PS4 confirmed to launch early next year

A Planetside 2 PS4 version will be available early next year, John Smedley confirmed today.

It's a smart move I believe, it gives them more time to optimize it and at the same time they avoid being crushed by Battlefield 4, COD: Ghosts and Killzone: Shadow Fall at launch.

Even if you don't fancy those, there is Blacklight: Retribution, Warframe and a ton of other F2p shooters.

At this rate PS4 will hardly have any games at launch due to no BC. Infact with Planetside 2 gone the launch line up looks terrible.

Fans will be on the sidelines with their PS4s, hoping for when the next game releases so they can play on their new box again. Xbox fans will pretty much be in the same boat.

@Decrypt I don't think so. If you're into sports You can play FIFA or 2K all year round, the same with BF4, KZ, Forza. There is no shortage of games. You can play Multiplayer BF4, FIFA, NBA, AC4, KZ,F5 for months until Destiny, PS2, Titanfall, inFamous, Watch Dogs, Driveclub etc. come out, and then even go back to them after to wait until; the next batch of Christmas games come out.

If the game were like Dead Rising and Ryse then sure, they wont last long once you get through the campaign you're pretty much done with the game, but there are so many new multiplayer experiences to get you through launch. Let alone all the indie games, F2P games, unannounced ports (GTA, South Park maybe?).

Well if I may, it was never confirmed for launch but it also was never ruled out according to the games creative director:

"Will PlanetSide 2 be available on the PS4 at launch? Or do you think it’s going to come later?"

"We definitely want be there at launch, and that’s what we’re aiming for. Because PlanetSide 2 is such a unique game, it’s not like we’re worried about competition on the horizon right now. There just aren’t any other games even coming out that are like it. Our focus is really on making sure that we’re delivering a really solid, polished product rather than trying to get it up as quick as possible. So maybe at launch we can have a closed beta on the PS4, an open beta on the PS4, and be building out of there. We’re not entirely sure. We’re going to see how it goes."

I think its actually a good idea since both Planetside 2 and KZ are futuristic shooter and it could take sales from it

Smart move by Sony. Getting people all hyped up by the launch titles for the PS4, then delaying some of those launch games to later dates... that way letting the hype continue.

You know, lots and lots of people have PCs and still don't want to game on them. I've played a few PC games during my gaming career and always come back to consoles. PCs aren't the holy grail of gaming.

Also, your above comment says "with Planetside 2 gone...", but it was never in the lineup. Right from the time they announced it for PS4 they said they wanted to have it ready for launch but didn't know if it would happen. They didn't even know if it would be ready for beta at PS4's launch.

The PC is a decent platform, but it's not the be all end all of gaming. There are many games that aren't going to the PC.

TBH with both Killzone and Battlefild I wouldn't have given it much attention at launch, it's a good move to come early next year it allows people who might be bored of the games to move onto this.

It's an awesome game on PC and I can't wait to play it on PS4 with that DS4! People who haven't tried it yet, your in for a ride.

That's a good point actually. I wouldn't be paying it as much attention because of Killzone.

This way it also builds up 'hype' up to its release. It would have been FPS over-kill at launch otherwise.

An optimisation patch is coming out on the PC soon so it shouldn't run as badly. So you could play it in the meantime on the PC building up your character and getting loads of unlocks and then transfer it to the PS4 when it comes out.

Before the xbone fantards get in here , like has been said IT WAS NOT A CONFIRMED LAUNCH GAME, so before you guys start trying to bring up the " drive club watch dogs (delayed on xbone as well) crap" don't bother you will just look as stupid as the ones trying to say the bf4 xbone version is the same or better then the ps4 version when every single site is saying other wise.

By the looks of it the coming months are going to be a mix of current gen games and next gen games. I'm not done with GTA for at least a while, I still have to check out Beyond 2 Souls and me & my Logitech can't wait for GT6. I have no PS4 pre-ordered but I expect to be able to buy one in december. From the initial 4 launchgames I was interested in only 2 remain, Killzone and Warthunder, for Driveclub and Planetside I will have to wait a little longer. In the meantime, inFamous will release in february.

Long story short: this isn't bad at all. Imo it's a great transition from old gen to new gen. And there's a good chance some of these games have to wait. With over 1500 hours played over the last 3 years and now that the servers are going down in january, I just have to get back into MAG and be part of those last battles with the few hundred dedicated fans. After that, bring on Planetside!

Planetside is amazing game, is a good decision to launch the game until 2014 because for this year there are a lot of games like Killzone, Battlefield, COD, Warframe, Blacklight and War thunder.

To those who ordered a PS4, isn't KZ:ShadowFall and BF4 enough when it comes to your FPS fix? Then again, I can understand people who bought the system without any games assuming that PlanetSide2 would be available day one.

It has been getting constant updates to fix the issues. It's going through an Optimization process as we speak (so PS4 version runs smooth)

I actually can play this on my laptop on Ultra so you may wanna check your PC.

But yes PS2 is not the most advanced running engine but it's a ton smoother from day 1 release and actually isn't even bad anymore, just CPU heavy.
