"With The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker out in the wild in all its cartoony and bloom-filled glory, a few of us got to thinking about how much we love cel-shaded games.
Cel-shading within games got its start with Jet Set Radio for the Sega Dreamcast, and a plethora of companies have been utilizing this unique art style ever since. The black outlines of the characters and the bright visuals call to mind a comic or cartoon come to life in 3D, complete with interactivity through our controllers.
There’s a good reason why we’re seeing so many HD ports of cel-shaded games. They hold up greatly in 480p, but why stop there when they can shine even more in full HD? Honestly, most of us wouldn’t mind more cel-shaded HD upgrades. We’re looking squarely at you, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud 2, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter and Viewtiful Joe.
In any case, allow us to chime in on our favorite cel-shaded games. Feel free to sound off in the comments if we missed mentioning the one you hold nearest and dearest to your heart." - Pixelitis Staff
20 years later, The Wind Waker’s Ganondorf is still The Legend of Zelda’s best villain.
From IGN: "Following Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi and No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda, popularly known as "Suda51," Capcom veteran Hiroyuki Kobayashi announced his move to NetEase Games back in August this year. Today, NetEase revealed Kobayashi's new studio as GPTRACK50, located in Osaka. At Capcom, Kobayashi worked as the producer on the Resident Evil series as well as Devil May Cry.
“I was at Capcom for 27 years. During my time, the company became a lot bigger and a lot of new staff came in,” Kobayashi told IGN in an exclusive interview.
“I worked on a wide array of titles at Capcom, but I wanted a new challenge,” he explained. “Of course, it’s not like Capcom didn’t allow me to try out new things, but now that the company is a lot bigger, things are different from the way they were when I joined the company as a freshman back in 1995. Everything now needs to be approved and things just take more time to get greenlit. I’m the kind of creator that wants to be able to deliver a new experience while it still feels fresh, and I had been thinking of creating my own studio to make that possible.”"
Nintendo is a weird company. It has the most illustrious legacy of any single company in the medium and seldom chooses to take advantage of that fact. Countless classics are confined to their original platforms or only available through outdated retail models or a cheeky bit of emulation.
This holiday would've been great and it would've calmed my hunger for tears of the kingdom. It supposedly exists but why has it taken this long I wonder. Here's hoping it still releases before totk, maybe a trailer at the game awards and a shadow drop.
Wii U was such a great to play every 3D Zelda game and various 2D ones as well
It'd be nice if Switch caught up to that wealth of legacy content
Booted up WW HD through emulation on Deck. Forgot how much I like that game, it's so charming with how expressive Link is. Ninty has taken too long.
Nintendo wants the focus on tears of the kingdom. Though with these year Zelda old rumors I question if the collection ever existed for the Switch. Much like the Prime Trilogy that evolved into a remake or remaster of just Prime 1 in recent months.
Not including Borderlands & Borderlands 2 is blasphemy.
Okami, madworld and windwaker are my personal favorites.
the best one is the first one the game made me buy Dreamcast
Jet Set Radio followed by LOZ WW and Okami
I will add:
madworld
Viewtiful joe 1 & 2
No more heroes 1 & 2
