What is next for Troy Baker? Let Him Play Nathan Drake.

A video from New York Comic Con that showcased the phenomenal casting and acting of Troy Baker as the new Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. Taking over for the retiring Mark Hamill is no small task but with a quick reading of one of the monologues from “The Killing Joke,” Baker proved once again that he is at the top of his game and–in my opinion–has supplanted Nolan North as the best voice actor in the gaming business.

With all that said there is one more character that I would love to see Baker take on…that character is Nathan Drake.

Why would you cahange an excellent voice for another excellent voice if the original is available. Also Nolan North did not always sound the same in games. He is in a ton of games where you would not even know he is in. The Last of Us says hello. Troy Baker is great but please keep Nolan North in Uncharted. Maybe have a game where both have lead roles. That could be great.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I would a game in which they both have leads but play against each other. I think that would be badass. I will say that maybe with the exception of that LOU role. A lot of the characters he plays sound too much like Drake but maybe I'm sensitive to it.

That's because that's what the studios ask him to do. He's gone on record saying a lot of studios ask him to do his normal voice, or the Drake voice. Prince of Persia comes to mind.

If you want Troy Baker and Nolan North to go head-to-head, play TLOU or Arkham Origins. They both have parts in both.

I think the problem with Nolan North is after Uncharted developers always want him to use his Nathan Drake voice which Nolan actually confirmed when he was talking about the Prince in the Prince of Persia reboot, how he asked the guys in the soundbooth "Oh hey do you want me to give the guy an accent or something" and they turned around and went "Oh no no, the voice your doing now is fine". I mean the guy can do it but it's up to the devs what they want from him.

Thing with Troy Baker it's distinctive, Joel, Booker, Delsin, Snow and even Yuri Lowell you can spot it's Troy. The one you wouldn't recognise is The Joker

Inb4 this turns into a David Hayter / Kiefer Sutherland story. Which went in a all to hell downhill twist of turns. Thus turning people off of the game going forward.

Good read, but I agree with the consensus: Nolan = Drake. No logical reason to change that, at all.

Thanks for the feedback, yes I agree that North made the character his own and embodies it. Do you think North has the range to help bring across a better effort in the next game or was the third game just a bad mix of writing and performance?

i think absolutely not. Nolan North IS Nathan Drake. anytime i hear him, in his regular voice, in another game all i think of is drake is in this game or that game.
for example:
Drake sitting in the animus.
Drake in he military in dubai.
Drake strapping on a jet pack.
so on and so forth.

they are both phenomenal voice actors with tons of range. i couldnt believe that North was in the last of us, ratchet acit, and portal 2.
there will be plenty of roles for each of them without taking the others parts. and i look forward to all of the work they both do.

WTH? I love Troy Baker in The Last of Us and he was also great in Bioshock Infinite, but Nolan North is Nathan Drake.

I will say the same thing I said about MGS, the voice actor is the character. It`s like changing the voice of Homer Simpson, Zoidberg, Peter Griffin, Woody in Toy Story and so on. Those guys are not just some people that make some voice overs. They are the character and they make the character who he/she is their own and not just read off a script.

This cult of the voice actors makes me long for the days when voices in video games weren't possible. Sure, they're a lot better than the quality of VAs we had when voices were first possible, but when people make a big deal about them I think we've gone too far. If you're focusing on who the VA of a game is when you decide to buy a game, I think you're nitpicking a little too much.
