I don't know what to say. The first 3 screens don't look like I would expect Gears of War 2 to look like. However, the scans of the Game Informer article look as if they are extremely good, but I can't tell for sure due to the blurriness of the pictures.

What's wrong with so many commenters on N4G? Anyone who says that multiplayer was not a major feature of Gears 1 has obviously never played Gears 1. Seriously, the single player campaign in Gears was not very long, that was one of its weaknesses. But it's so fun to play co-op even with people you don't know, and Versus is just amazing and unique. I admit it's hard to get into; at first I didn't like Versus because it is different from most FPS games and so I wasn't any good. But when you get into it, it is a one-of-kind experience, regardless of what people say. I have been playing shooters since the original Doom, and Gears is not the same as any of them. Multiplayer may not be for everyone, but it is a HUGE part of Gears series, and Epic knows that, so I am expecting something big in Gears 2.

As for as GTAIV, I'm convinced that the single player game will be amazing, but I'm not so sure that the multiplayer will be great just because there's a lot of game modes. For a franchise that has been centered on single player, I think it'll be hard for the game to be the best multiplayer game of the year. But I'm sure it will be competition, since it is Rockstar, after all.

as a primarily PC gamer i can honestly say without a doubt that those screens look worse than the PC version of UT3. I, am not impressed(and honestly, what can you expect from a low/mid gaming PC, the 360). However, if people like the game, then get the second. That's the beauty of games, they're supposed to be fun. The video of the new UE3 technology with the destructible environments, etc., looked way cooler. This is pretty lackluster in my opinion. The painting is pretty sweet looking though. What's with that character design? Doesn't look all that appropriate up against the art & design style of the first game. Kind of a giant dichotomy.

Yeah the Cowboy makes me think, what the hell are they doing? Yeah of course he has the big macho Gears look with the tattoo's 'n Body armour etc, but at first glance that Cowboy hat just looks a bit out of place, then on second thought it reminds me that all these guys are individuals with their own identity and then I start to think that this guy will have that old western type of appeal, hopefully he has some kind of badass pistols to go along with that image. Who knows, just thinking out loud either way Gears1 is one of my favorite games of all time and Gears2 looks great, so I can't wait 'til it drops this fall.

If anything, it's clear they are putting to even better use (if that was even possible from how great the first game still looks) ZBrush for hirez normal map shader generation.

But it's not like polygon counts actually matter; it's all about textures and normal maps. Polygons only create more physical detail in environments and characters, enhance the effects of the lighting engine, and allow for more realistic body and facial animation. Polygons aren't important. It's all about textures, right? =P

Doubling the polygon count to what's being done in most 2007 games? Gears 1 had pretty low poly counts. I mean compare the over the shoulder shots in Gears 1 and compare it to say Uncharted. My guess is Uncharted has triple the amount compared to Gears 1.

These screens are showing that maybe Gears 2 and the new Unreal won't be as big of a leap as some had thought and hoped. Yes, improved lighting, but it seems to have the same dull filter to hide some of the rougher edges in the engine. There are better looking games coming out in 2008/09, including 360 games if that first screen is anything to go by.

Yeah there was some new soft-body physics debuted for Unreal Engine 3 recently, and some new lighting and stuff, but whether all of that gets implemented into Gears 2...we'll see.

Looks great imo. Not a great ss really but you get a basic idea (wish it was 1280x720... still looks fantastic when streamed to my 360 on hdtv though). Mag still has better although can't see what they look like on tv... scans don't count as they never look as good as direct. Character models though look pretty sweet but I'd rather see a direct shot of a locust ;)

Environmentally speaking, there are 'better' looking games but have to take into account this is first direct shot shown and doubt they'll really show the best till closer to release or E3 (probably first gameplay vid then). Doesn't really get me too excited but its a decent start...

Also, if you don't read/see the mag then the 'change' might make less sense to people. Does seem very different though... hope its not by too much.

About this ingame picture, I can only say that its not doing the UE3.0 particular justice. I know UE is based on low polys and I absolutely hate it due to that but man, even Gears of War 1 looked better than this...

I think with increasing the number of NPCs on screen in GoW2, the environments will definitely suffer. The physics in the first game was majorly absent and I don't think there will be much of that in here too... but even texture-wise, this picture shouts "CRAP"... that we know it shouldn't be. And man, the model looks like its from the eerily ugly and low-poly Silent Hill 5, YUCK!!!

I think people are going to expect the same breakthrough as the first game did and its not going to happen. I hope they make up for it with better in-game capacities. I still think it is going to be tough to beat COD4 and also some of the titles that PS3 will be coming out with this year (Killzone2, Resistance2....etc.)

For example, I don't think the visuals on Resistance2 are going to be vastly superior to the 1st, but it sounds like they are making leaps and bounds with new in game updates and playability.
