Enemy Territory: Quake Wars to have mandatory 4.1 GB install

In an interview with PlayStation Universe, Bill Chin, Studio CTO at Underground Development stated that the game will have a mandatory 4.1GB install to the hard drive to help with load times and textures for vehicle cockpits.

omni_atlas5878d ago

I don't mind the install if the game runs faster, but it should be OPTIONAL, not mandatory.

Varsarus5878d ago

Your right, get them on the phone to Sega as they got the job done with the Valkyria game.

Kleptic5878d ago

when its mandatory, its a sign that the game is properly optimized for the PS3...every PS3 has an HDD...devs taking advantage of that fact get more out of the system...simple as that...

the only frustrating thing is just how the OS installs it...the most powerful processor ever put in a console can't install a game cache file in the background?...ugh...

jackdoe5878d ago

I disagree. When it is mandatory, it means that they could not be bothered to find ways to circumvent the large mandatory install. There are ways to circumvent it, Naughty Dog found it for example, but apparently the Enemy Territory guys couldn't bother. Whatever.

Kleptic5878d ago

Naughty Dog dodged it only partly...there is an install...its just a temp cache file though, but still can be up to several gigs (depending at what point of the game you start playing)...if you are limited on HDD space, the cache file will be cut accordingly, but there are potentially brief pauses from time to time, almost like checkpoints...

when you quit the game...the file is erased...but this is why there is a 1 minute or so load process every time you start playing...but once it loads...you won't do it again until you quit and restart the game...

this is what Free Radical is doing with Haze also...its not 'mandatory', but there will be a 1-2 minute load screen everytime you start playing...then you could finish the game without another load process, assuming you do it in one sitting...

personally I don't mind just having the file permanently on there...but to each their own...all I was referring to was that there are multiplatform games that do not take advantage of the HDD in anything other than game saves...which is a total waste...

could be a sleeper hit here. Just because it came out a bunch of months ago on computer doesn't mean it's not super. This game is the template to Resistance 2 multiplayers attempt with classes and purpose and every PS3 fan should check it out. Unfortunately the game industry has a quick attention span so because it doesn't include the new hotness of enviro destructability like Bad Company it might get looked over, but it's definetely better than UT3.

I'm a great fan of Quake....but I've only got 10GB left on my 60GB hard drive.. I think its getting near the time to upgrade or doing some cleaning.
But 4.1 GB is a lot....I'm sure they could cut back a Gig and have it load a little slower.

Kleptic5878d ago (Edited 5878d ago )

it took me foreverto realize this but the the gameplay is based off of Return to Casle Wolfenstein's multiplayer...which is by far one of the best WWII PC shooters ever made, at least online wise...

the original ET was supposed to be a pay-for expansion for RTCW...but they canned the single player part of it, and just released the online part for free...and it was also a complete standalone game, that didn't require RTCW to play...

in either case...I thoroughly enjoyed both games...and always liked Quake 2 (the quake game that this story is based off of, as well as Quake 4)...iD doesn't really have the crazy awesomeness it used to when Romero was still with them, but this could be better than expected...

I.D. has always been ahead of the curve.Their PC technology is changing and seems to ultimately be suited for consoles. The MegatextureTechnology seems promising especially for the PS3!
Lets see if the stay Console after this game hits its mark?

"Blu-Ray is needed for games" If you own a 40gb version of the PS3 your game library coudn't be more than 5 (with install) before it runs out of space. What about those who want to play another game when it's full? they have to uninstall the game, then if they wan't to play it again, they have to install it again :( I could understand if it's PC but this is a game console and is marketed as a game console. Looks like this problem is just going to get worse, because there is "NO" way for Sony's to speed up those drives without retrofit. This is a great game and all, but how many great games can the PS3 hold?

iHEARTboobs5878d ago

I have like 6 PS3 games right now and none require an install. How many games do you know of require that magnitude of an install? And if you do have a 40gb ps3 you'll be able to have 6-7 games with a 5gb install. With the rest of the 5-10gb's going towards other media and system updates. To most it wont be a problem but if it is you can easily pick up another drive for not a lot of money.

okcomputer5878d ago

Nitpick much? What 40gb ps3 owner seriously has all 15 of those mandatory install games saved on their ps3 at any given moment at the same time, and is actively playing all 15 so that they couldn't just delete the old installs and make more room? We're talking maybe .1% of ps3 owners, if that. Its really an irrelevant argument.

iHEARTboobs5878d ago (Edited 5878d ago )

Damn, it's like you were waiting for someone to say something. I'm glad you listed the games. How many of those do you think the average ps3 gamer has? It would vary right? I don't have any of those though. A lot of those games suck, some i'm not into or care for but i might pick a couple of them up. Now i'm not trying to justify it but it's not a huge problem like you make it seem. Just clean house if you have to. As for GTA4, it's a 5min install but wasn't it just going to be less than 20mb?

Oh and another thing, if you can afford all those games then you can definately afford another drive and therefore store more installs, movies, pictures and music. You can't go wrong with a larger drive.

iHEARTboobs5878d ago

And FYI, i'm going to see Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl! Be jealous people!
