How to record/stream the PS3(And maybe PS4)

Heres a quick video tutorial on how to setup the ps3 to bypass HDCP for recording/streaming. With the rumours that the PS4 might keep HDCP, this method should work on the next gen as well

Hey Sony. You know what would be cool? If I could use my Elgato with my pre-ordered PS4 without having to buy extra equipment to strip a dumb encryption that other consoles don't have.

The sooner you announce it's exclusion, the better :)

phantomlink3911d ago

Just read up on those devices, they are a HDMI recording device, which claim to passthrough however they are still affected by HDCP? Sounds like a bad case of false advertising

svoulis3911d ago

This is the most expensive way to bypass HDCP. I don't understand why people do this as it cost a lot more money then the simple way.

I made a diagram for people to see how easy it is.

All you need is a Cheap HDMI splitter follow that diagram and you are set. Simple I do it for my livestream and recordings.

I also included the pros for using an HDMI splitter in the picture.

phantomlink3911d ago

Its not really that much more expensive then your method. You still need that capture card itself which is the largest expense. That splitter is $20, this converter box was $30 when I bought it

svoulis3911d ago (Edited 3911d ago )

The whole idea is that they have a capture card already. What would be the point if not right?

Anyway your way and most of a lot of other people involves a few extra cables as well.

1 DVI to HDMI converter- lets say somewhere between 2-5$ on ebay

1 Optical cable - lets say 2-5$ on ebay.

1 HDMI To DVI converter box - anywhere from 50-80 dollars on ebay.

1 EXTRA HDMI cable assuming you are going to be playing on a TV monitor and not through xsplot or obs (bad idea cause of latency) - lets say another 5 dollars.

So in total this method cost anywhere from 80 to 100+ dollars.

Or you could simply use a HDMI splitter that cost 15-20$ and it also passes the audio through as well so no need for optical cables etc.

Not saying the video you showed is incorrect as that method does work, just saying it cost about 80+ dollars more to do it this way.

EDIT - I also assumed shipping and tax etc on my "pricing"

phantomlink3911d ago

Thats the video I saw and replied to a few comments about, I meant to make an article a few months ago about it and people asked about a video on how to hook it up, so I threw one together yesterday

dboyman3911d ago (Edited 3911d ago )

Sorry to ask this but how does the splitter work? Does it actually "strip" the HDCP from the end going to the capture device? Most splitters I seen don't mention that option. So is the splitter you mentioned different?

svoulis3911d ago

The splitter strips HDCP from the PS3 and possibly PS4 to the output signal, on both your capture device and your TV.

I can confirm this is in fact the best way as I've done every method of stripping HDMI and this is the easiest and best.

dboyman3911d ago

Ok. But does any HDMI splitter work, or just that particular model? Reason I ask is someone giving me a spare splitter...

@svoulis

You the man.

mixelon3911d ago

I use the splitter method. It will also work on the ps4. :) id bet on it.

thehitman3911d ago

Or... could just use the share button.

phantomlink3911d ago

How is the share button going to let you edit? If you read my article, I said we have no idea what the limits on the built in Twitch are. Using a program like Xsplit allows you to customize a stream greatly, I still plan to renew my license for the premium membership just because of the customization you can do.

Also, how are you going to get the saved videos off your ps3 harddrive? Twitch is nice for saving some content, but I'd rather upload my dedicated recordings to Youtube

thehitman3911d ago (Edited 3911d ago )

Um... I am pretty sure they said it gets saved to the HDD so plugging in a usb probably works or since you can upload it to twitch, ustream, twitter, facebook you could easily take it from there after u upload it on your PC and edit it as freely as you want. Takes a little common sense + brain work.

Also I am pretty sure you can upload directly to youtube the question is whether all these video capture device will work easily with the ps4.

svoulis3911d ago

Share button will probably be limited for all we know. I've invested over 1000 dollars on a streaming PC and even if my PS4 has Twitch integrated I still prefer to use my hardware to stream cause I try and achieve the absolute best quality I can for my viewers. I highly doubt you will have that kind of freedom with the PS4 or Xbox One for livestreaming.

OBS and Xsplit allow for overlays, and setting up the stream as you see fit. including where you want the webcam to be placed.

Hicken3911d ago

"...probably be limited for all we know."

And it will probably be unlimited for all we know.

Not trying to knock you or anything, but if we don't know anything one way or the other, why take the extreme?

svoulis3911d ago

@Hicken, lets just assume you know nothing about livestreaming.

Livestreaming is very very intensive on your PC if you have high quality settings 720p+ 30fps-60fps.

Also the "interface" for both Xbox One and PS4 will be limited to what Sony and Microsoft allows (Do to performance impact while gaming)

For example. If I stream Battlefield 4 on my desktop and want to stream it at 60fps @720p it will max out my CPU and cause lag throughout the game. Streaming is very heavy on the CPU and it shows. Thats why I've built a streaming PC separate from my gaming PC to do all the streaming/encoding/uploading work for me.

If i were to lower the quality to like 540p with 25-30FPS for recording/streaming it will be fine and not max out my CPU.

Also overlays are the things you put ontop of your video feed like Graphic art etc. For example I have a webcam overlay on my stream as well as for the chat on twitch.tv.

For example here is a highlight from my livestream
http://www.twitch.tv/xgrave...

PS4 nor Xbox One will allow you to use custom made overlays I can assure you that.

The streaming you can expect for next gen consoles will probably be somewhere around 540p with 20-30fps livestreaming for performance reasons alone.

I'd still prefer to use my custom built streaming PC as it is more then capable of streaming 720p @ 60fps.

About the share button, Sony has already made mutliple remarks reguarding sharing "Clips" with friends...not entire hour+ long gameplay footage. A clip is generally a few minutes long.

Still speculation but I don't think you can sit there and record your entire gameplay and share it..honestly.

thehitman3911d ago

@svoulis

You do know that Sony has a dedicated cpu just for streaming and there is more than enough resources to allow it w/o a performance hit otherwise they wouldnt of made it 1 of the main functions on the system. You shouldnt assume that there will be limitations like Hicken said you obviously know nothing about the ps4 architecture and strength to base your reasoning on why using the share button over a capture device will be better or different.

If you want to justify your money you spent for streaming by doing it through your PC then go ahead, but I doubt you will get much better quality or even have an easier process while doing it.

ZTGD | Game Capture HD II (Hardware) Review

Ken McKown writes: When Avermedia sent over the Game Capture HD II I was expecting yet another piece of hardware that captures game clips, offers commentary and has one or two quirks that simply annoy me. Much to my surprise, this device actually brings something new and interesting to the table. This is the first capture device that does not require a PC to function, making it much more appealing to those without hefty hardware who want to become a YouTube sensation.

ExtremeCap U3 Review | SelectButton

SelectButton: "The ExtremeCap U3 can be found on Amazon for the same price as its pocket-sized brother, Live Gamer Portable, and still cheaper than the internal Live Gamer HD. Having USB 3.0 should be a huge factor when determining what product to purchase. If the answer is yes, the ExtremeCap U3 should be the only product on your list, with incredible visual quality and the only way to record 1080p at 60fps videos with a consumer level device. The lack of video pass-through does hurt the product if your PC doesn’t have USB 3.0 due to the lack of video pass-through and Mac users are simply out of luck once again."

Sorry but how old is this review? It states that this device can only capture video @ 30Mbps if recording 1080p/60fps.....but I bought this device in the last week of January and when I installed the latest drivers/software, it allowed me to capture video @ 60Mbps when 1080p/60fps

samus41453768d ago

Review is based on the current ones listed on their site. RECentral maxes out on 30Mbps on 1080p/60fps on the setup.

It is possible they didn't update correctly (I will re-test and update accordingly). This is a good reason why ALL updated drivers should have release notes. Or they could just bring back the forum...

rajman3768d ago

I see, my RECentral is version 1.3.0.80 and as you can see below I can capture 60mbps/1080p/60fps

HighResHero3768d ago

Rajman, do you mind me asking roughly what computer setup you use to manage your high bitrate videos?

rajman3768d ago

What you mean setup? if you're asking what kind of PC I have, its the following:
- intel Core i7 3770K (3.5ghz) overclocked to 4.4ghz
- EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti PCI-E Graphics Card - 2 GB
- ASUS P8Z77-V LX NEW Z77 Chipset Motherboard
- Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866Mhz
- 2TB SATA3 HDD
- OCZ ZS Series 750W 80+ Bronze PSU
- Thermaltake Contac 21 CPU Cooler

HighResHero3768d ago (Edited 3768d ago )

That was pretty much exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for the info and a helpful bubble to you.

(I'm looking into buying a new laptop and I'm not sure if I should skimp on the laptop and build a new desktop, etc. Basically, I'm shopping around and gathering information about different setups.)

aSimplex3767d ago

I created an account just to reply to your comment -
I have a Mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro with the dual core 2.9ghz i7 processor, 16gb RAM (8 was fine too), and Intel HD 4000 Graphics. I also have both Mac OS and Windows 7 installed (via Bootcamp) and I can use the ExtremeCap U3 perfectly fine using the recentral software supplied from Avermedia (recording 1080p/60fps @60mbps).

So there's my specs for reference if you plan on recording using Avermedia's software - if you plan on recording raw footage though (.avi), you will need a beefier computer to record full 1080p footage (though in my case I THINK all I need is dedicated graphics and I've seen people rig their own external graphics for macbooks around the internet which I may end up trying in the future unless I buy a desktop - I was also using premiere pro to try to record raw footage and I believe premiere pro isn't well optimized for laptops anyways, reason I say that is because using Final Cut Pro has been faster in my opinion, especially when rendering and exporting)

samus41453767d ago

So last night I ended I completely uninstalled everything AverMedia and re-installed it from the 1/21 file they posted and it finally worked.

Tested it and was able to select up to 60Mbps just like the Live Gamer HD and Live Gamer Portable.

If you didn't comment, I wouldn't have known it wasn't installed correctly. Obviously, the review is updated to reflect.

Thanks!
