Is Call Of Duty Dead?

Mark of Corrupted Cartridge writes "With a new Call Of Duty coming out almost yearly I'm beginning to wonder if the franchise is dead and if their is any reason (besides money) for Treyarch and Infinity Ward to keep releasing games in this series.

The single player section of many of the games were great but I feel that now the Modern Warfare trilogy has finished there aren't many other directions that I can think of that they can take the series in. "

what a dumb article, all i did was read the title because this is absolutely stupid. COD atm is the number one highest preordered game, stop making ridiculous topics. COD is far from dead it is actually one of the highest played games on consoles atm.

admiralvic3900d ago

How so?

The article starts by talking about how it's a yearly series and that apparently makes it dead because the story can't go in a new direction.

The first problem is that it might be a yearly series, but it's made by two different developers and features the somewhat standard 2 year development cycle. This is quite evident when you look at how MW 1 / 2 / 3 all have a 2 year gap and W@W / BO 1 / BO 2 follow the same pattern with one title replacing the other after a year. The other problem is that the writer assumes CoD is STILL a story driven game, where as most people would agree it's multiplayer driven. This can probably get to a point where they could do a MP game like MAG and remove the story completely.

Anyway, no game / story / movie / anything with a story instantly dies because there are no directions to take it. What typically happens is that they simply expand on something established, go somewhere completely separate from the original story, reboot the series (like Lost Planet 3) or phone it in.

Just off the top of my head they could cover a war prior to WW2 (where CoD I guess starts). Write an alternate timeline where the events of X didn't happen. Do a previous series from the antagonists point of view. Set it several years in the future where there would be enough time to come up with a reason to fight. Follow some other team during the same time period trying to help the cause in another way. etc.

@ Ohhwerd

care to tell us why? Anyone can make statements but STFU if you can't back up your argument. What Stuntz said is true.

zeal0us3900d ago

While GTA is increasing popular, CoD still sells higher and is played by more players.

aceitman3900d ago

its on the decline but not dead , hopefully that will give them the kick they need to refresh the game starting with graphics , higher number in multiplayer , ( the good old days with call of duty 2 -playing on 360 lan hacked 30 player matches) larger maps at least to fit with how many players are on, bringing tanks back.

CrossingEden3900d ago

Highest pre-order for next gen is your idea of decline?

Eonjay3900d ago

Zombies are also dead... and they just keep coming. Whats your point?

the worst3899d ago (Edited 3899d ago )

yes it is a dumb article.
call of duty will never die.
the one game that might make people look somewhere else
is a timed exclusive on xbone-head and pc.

NumOnePS3FanBoy3899d ago

Even though it's not dead, I hope it dies a painful and miserable death.

Mr Tretton3899d ago

Well, it's dead to me, and that's all that matters to me.

Call of Duty: Ghosts 'on track to be most pre-ordered game of 2013'

Nope, Call of Duty is not even close of dead..

@lol disagrees, typical N4G.

Ps4Console3899d ago

Apparently it's supposed to e the biggest pre-ordered game this year on all consoles next gen I don't know though but last gen definitely .
I don't mind the Sp but they need to stop the Qs right away because it's definitely an irritant for gamers just wanting fun .

urwifeminder3900d ago

I doubt it I know people who have ordered it for xb1 they cant wait.

xReDeMpTiOnx3900d ago

Not even close to dead but it seems to be slowing down from its annual gains.

I wish cod would at the very least just go away for awhile at least a few years and let some other games shine until they really put something new out there and mind blowing like cod 4 was.

corvusmd3900d ago

Considering that it's already set to break all pre-order records...even GTA5...I'd say no

zyphee3900d ago

Its not beating gta 5, gta 5 has 7.5 million preorders, UK and US. Just stamp

Lawndart19813900d ago

I wouldn't say its dead yet as Activision confirmed there were two cod titles in the pipeline when bo2 released (Ghosts being one). There is still a very large audience for this franchise.

I'm really looking forward to the single player portion of this game and see where they take the story line, but he has a point about the multiplayer. I recently switched to the BF series and I've been very pleased with it, its my fps for 2014. Despite the gameplay changes IW has revealed for the multiplayer portion, Ghosts at first appearance isn't doing it for me.

All Call of Duty Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Call of Duty has to be the most recognizable franchise on the planet. They didn’t get that way by only making a handful of games.

COD has a long and storied career. Launching as a PC WW2 first-person shooter, Call of Duty has gone through numerous makeovers and been on just about every system. The series has gone through some serious highs and tragic lows. I’ll be looking at each Call of Duty game, the good the bad, and the ugly."

Vanguard better be at the fkn bottom. Can’t believe ppl haven’t eviscerated that game with all its lacking

Minimoth821d ago

Yeah, it's close to the bottom. There are a couple of worse ones. Infinite Warfare definitely deserves its place.

KyRo821d ago

There's a number a lot worse than Vangaurd. It's also a lot better than that car crash Treyarch released before it.

XbladeTeddy821d ago

World at War is my favourite. Didn't know the N-Gage had a Call of Duty.

MadLad820d ago

Same for me.
I was never huge into Call of Duty, but I sunk a lot of time into WaW.
Both the campaign and the multiplayer are on point. Wouldn't mind a remaster.

I quit on CoD for a long while. Though I'm the odd man out that actually really enjoyed the campaign for WWII, being I got it through Humble monthly way back when.

TheLigX821d ago

I really enjoyed the Infinite campaign. Multiplayer... not so much.

Yppupdam821d ago

I agree, The Infinite campaign feels more like it's own thing that they slapped the CoD name on. If it stood on it's own, (sans the CoD name) I think it could have been it's own scifi franchise. And a damn good looking game, to boot. I never bothered to play the multiplayer.

victorMaje821d ago

MW 2019 apart from the desastrous file sizes is way better than AW.

MadLad820d ago

That was one I grabbed for Playstation because it pretty much just came out during the Redbox purge of videogames, and I got it for dirt cheap.

It was great coming home to an update every night, and watching one game eat up almost half my console's memory.

Amplitude820d ago (Edited 820d ago )

Will get disagrees but Infinite Warfare campaign was really good. Decent story, set pieces were amazing and if it didn't have the CoD game on it I'm sure people would have been more into it. Advanced Warfare was alright too. Titanfall 2 was just 1000 times better than both but I enjoyed them for their campaigns. I literally barely gaf about the story I'm in it for the set pieces and 5 hours of being stoned watching cool nonsense happen if I'm in the mood to play a CoD campaign. If I'm looking for a deep plot I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Ghosts was the worst story-wise though lol that cliffhanger ending was so bs.

Also MW 2019 was sick and is one of the best CoD games in yeeeears not sure why it's so low on this dude's list. Campaign was great, multiplayer was great and Warzone was fun for a while. Over it now but shrugs.

Beat the Vanguard campaign too but I can't even remember a single thing about it other than that it felt like it was 45 minutes long. Might be the most forgettable thing I've ever played lol just fully erased from my brain

Wore implementation I've ever seen,.. guess it just does not work all that great on every engine

MarkyMark891782d ago (Edited 1782d ago )

Agree, but this gives me hope that one day Ray Tracing can be a software based feature and not require some type of proprietary hardware to achieve. Software will always outpace Hardware so it could happen, but I feel like its going to take a lot more time to achieve the same level that RTX has already shown glimpses of so far. Really just waiting for Cyberpunk to see if RTX is actually something viable. I think if anybody can truly showcase RTX Features it would be Projekt Red.

zeal0us1782d ago

Too bad it doesn't make Mankind Divided a better game.

starchild1782d ago

It doesn't need to, the game was already fantastic, imo.

zeal0us1781d ago

Human Revolution was a better game and not to mention longer.

isarai1782d ago

Reshade is not raytracing, its a screen space post processing effect. Thats like calling SSAO "global illumination"
