Dear Microsoft: Stay the hell away from PC gaming

Steve Ballmer announced that he’ll be stepping down as the CEO of Microsoft within the next year. The Surface RT was a costly flop. The company is in a transitional phase, and this has led some people to speculate that, hey, maybe Microsoft will have a renewed interest in PC gaming!

Dear God, no

.....Microsoft own windows... therefor they ARE PC gaming - Games aren't played on Mac(as much) all on windows. a MS product.

lol

Indo3935d ago

The software not the hardware.

aquamala3935d ago

The only part MS makes money on PC gaming are the Windows licenses, that's it. they don't get a penny on PC game sales.

Blackdeath_6633935d ago

they have nothing to do with PC gaming. Games for windows live was such and atrocious and broken service they are supposedly shutting it down and i hope they never touch PC gaming.

clouds53935d ago (Edited 3935d ago )

True, but they show amazingly little effort even though they own basically all of PC gaming.

All I want from Microsoft is to put "exclusiv" xbox one game on PC. Doesn't need to be right away, timely exclusive is fine.
But its kind of stupid that they develop x86 games on PC and then they won't come out for PC? That's like making an offroad car and selling it only with race track tires or something...

So MS I wont buy your new console just for those exclusives as I haven't bought a 360 for them. But I would buy them games^^ And I can imagine it would not be that big of an effort to "port" those x86 games to THE x86 platform?

r1sh123935d ago

The writer of this is a complete clown.
Im not sure if he is referring to games for windows or what, but he is clearly confused.

starchild3935d ago

I don't want another Games For Windows Live, but there are other ways that Microsoft could help strengthen PC gaming that would be good for PC gamers and for them.

Red_Devilz3934d ago

This statement is wrong at so many levels. When we say MS from XBox standpoint, we bear in mind that whatever transactions happen (game purchases including disc, DLC, other paid content) in XB ecosystem, MS gets large share of it directly.
In other words XB game/content sale = more revenue for MS.

But, if you look at PC gaming, even though OS is from MS, there is no ecosystem on PC that MS can get revenue from (at least not as profitable as XB). So, even though every PC game runs on windows, MS doesn't get a single penny revenue out of it. Even though MS has large market share in "PC gaming platform" (not development), there is absolutely no revenue for MS through it.

This is exactly the difference between PC software sales and Apple Appstore sales, where Apple gets some share out of each transaction.

Windows selling OS to PC user, once they sold it, their job has been done, thats it. MS havn't right to control the content on ur PC. I think this article means bring XBox games to PC.

Blackdeath_6633935d ago

assuming ofcourse the PC user actually bought their OS.

come_bom3935d ago

What a LAME article. How did this get approved!

ApolloTheBoss3934d ago

Because N4G. Don't tell me you're surprised.

FriedGoat3934d ago

Titanfall is coming for PC anyway, Thats where I'm buying it.

awi59513934d ago

Games for windows is total crap if you made a offline save file on games for windows games. A update corrupted all your game saves and their is no way to fix them thats why i will hate it forever.

ATi_Elite3934d ago

1. See that picture? That's a LAN Party. I've been to Lan parties that size and they give out cool prizes all weekend long plus they have Dance floors, a bar, bungie jumping in the parking lot, go-carts and Sofa rooms to just hang out and chat. Super Duper fun times.

So DAM you and your buddy playing on your mothers couch eating up the Doritos. Lan Party is where it's at.

2. Microsoft sucks as a PC Gaming supporter. They learned from PC gaming took that knowledge and went and made the Xbox.

End of Story.

3. No PC gamer wants MS on the PC side except to port over those 360 games (which they will, hey it's easy $$$$$$)

4. Steambox/Valve/Lynix will make having a Windows OS NO LONGER NECESSARY to play PC games. The code (Wrapper) is already there, Gabe has verified this several times.

(I think MS is throwing huge amounts of cash at Gabe to stop this or it's going through the legal mumbo jumbo stuff but it's there and it works)

so Bye bye Windows!

5. DirectX has reached it's end according to MICROSOFT themselves as they have stated NO plans for DX12.....meanwhile most Devs have switched to OpenGL anyway which does the same darn thing but MINUS Microsoft.

6. Microsoft is focusing on the Living room and having a box in between your cable jack and your TV is what they want.

(Which is what Apple is trying to do also, you know Apple, Microsoft's MAIN competitor)

People get so caught up in this PS4/XB1 thing that they forget that Sony and MS are BUSINESS PARTNERS while Apple is Microsoft's and SOny's main competitor.

iPod/iphone KILLED every SOny mobile device for those who have no clue.

Pc gaming is Microsoft (Windows). No other OS has the amount of developer support

Shinox3935d ago (Edited 3935d ago )

Then why would they bring a console called "XBOX" out of nowhere and shove it up our throats when they already have their own machine called "PC" , Greedy M$ they are so jealous of how Console gaming makes money

kornbeaner3935d ago

Because it's a way to get your brand out to more people. Plus MS doesn't make money per games sold on PC/Windows. If I wanted to, I can make a game, sell it and MS wouldn't get a cut. Unlike with Consoles, every game sold on the Wii U,PS4 and Xbox One. Those manufactures get a cut, so why wouldn't you bring out a console if you can and survive , there is money to be made there if successful.

Also a console offers Developers an easier way to develop, developers only have to know what the PS4, XB1 and Wii U are capable of, they don't have to take into account the many configuration there maybe for all the gaming capable PCs, so it's easier overall.

Really the reasons to why MS entered the console market are many.

Shinox3935d ago (Edited 3935d ago )

@kornbeaner What in the world are you talking about ?

I'm talking about the past in you talk about the present, Who gives a crap about M$ present and how much money they make !?

M$ is Not Sony or Nintendo or Sega or even Atari in the first place to compare with , they are a Software Company and they has nothing to do with console gaming "to begin with" , Quit defending them there's no excuse to defend on how or why the bring the "XBOX" thing in the first place in the name of "competition"

No_Limit3935d ago (Edited 3935d ago )

@Shinox
"they are a Software Company and they has nothing to do with console gaming "to begin with"

excuse me, before the PSOne release, was Sony always a console gaming company? think about that for a second.

From your link http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.
" The company was established on November 16, 1993 in Tokyo, Japan, prior to the launch of the original PlayStation video game system"

Sony was founded in 1955. Nice spin there buddy.

It will go eventually. Everyone know linux is superior, like you said Windows has the majority of the developers support.
The standard must change, and it will if Valve has their way.

starchild3935d ago

I don't want to switch completely to Linux. It is an inferior operating system with less support.

If games switched over to Linux and the rest of the world didn't, we would be stuck having to dual boot or have a gaming PC that didn't have as broad a range of non-gaming software support.

Not to mention, DirectX is largely what allows us to have backwards compatibility. Switching completely over to linux would end that backwards compatibility.

No thanks. I'm not against Linux at all. I think it is nice in many ways and brings competition. At the same time, though, I've never really had a problem with Windows at all. For me personally I just don't think it is worth it at this time.

FighterJoe3935d ago

All I want from Microsoft is to make a new Flight Simulator, and not like that rubbish attempt that was MS Flight.

dcj05243935d ago (Edited 3935d ago )

YES!! I played the crap out of the 2004 one. The graphics breathtaking and so real ( back then) and I loved flying the airplanes to actual cities. God I want another one with vastly improved graphics and. Oh god. Oculus rift support.

aliengmr3934d ago (Edited 3934d ago )

Like everything else to do with PC gaming they quit that too. Besides there are far better flight sims out these days.

FighterJoe3934d ago

"Besides there are far better flight sims out these days. "

Not when it comes to addons for commerical airline simulation, FSX still reigns supreme. With developers like PMDG, FSLabs, Majestic etc creating the most accurate simulations of Boeings/Airbus/Dash-8 sort of level D sims.

Megaton3935d ago

They're dismantling GFWL, which is a great thing. They'll probably try to hide some games in the Windows 8 store, though. I had no idea BlazBlue was even on PC until last week. Apparently it was hidden exclusively in the GFWL market.

luoshuigui3935d ago

Arent that what they've been doing all these years? Remember a few years back when Microsoft had all those amazing titles like Age of Empire, Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology, Freelancer, Zootycoon? They basically laid off all of their talent and continues spew out piece of shit like Halo or Gears games. I think it's pretty clear they DO stay away from PC as far as possible.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies7d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX7d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody7d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic7d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP3d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_7d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga7d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie6d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly7d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga7d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit7d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic7d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_7d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21837d ago (Edited 7d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies7d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead11d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan11d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl11d ago
