Bayonetta franchise was "on the brink of disappearing," says Platinum

The Bayonetta franchise was on "the brink of disappearing" forever after SEGA put any plans for a sequel on hold, but Nintendo stepped in to allow Platinum Games designer Hideki Kamiya to complete unfinished business with the witch-based action game.

"I had unfinished business that I wanted to include in a second one," Kamiya told VideoGamer.com at Gamescom yesterday. "When that idea came about, SEGA was actually putting it on hold so, yes, I'm very grateful for Nintendo that they're allowing us to make this happen."

He added: "When Nintendo offered to support us and the Bayonetta franchise - which was on the brink of disappearing - I was extremely happy for it survival as we were able to release a second one for the people who enjoyed the first."

Now everyone can stop saying that Nintendo stole the franchise.
They saved it.

Gazondaily3926d ago

I thought that much as obvious from day one. But rage overcomes reason for many keyboard warrior fanboys.

mikeslemonade3926d ago

Either they or Nintendo will lose money. Nintendo is a losing proposition.

ritsuka6663926d ago

keyboard warrior fanboys.'

The rage come from PS fanboys, thats for sure..

Silly gameAr3926d ago

Does your butt hurt ritsuka? Do you people have to make everything about PS fanboys? Stop crying already.

PopRocks3593925d ago (Edited 3925d ago )

It probably came from Microsoft, Sony and Sega fanboys all together. Sega fanboys in particular if you look at the reaction to Sonic Lost World's exclusivity as well.

Which is funny because I don't recall so much immature griping when Sonic Colors was exclusive to Nintendo consoles as well.

lilbroRx3925d ago

@Silly gameAr, he is just poiting out that in most caes that is the case.

I don't see Xbox or PC fanboys trolling every positive Wii U article and tyring to promote Sony hardware in the comments sections no matter what the article is about.

I don't remember people saying Nintendo stole the franchise, it's pretty much obvious that they saved it. It's kind of a happy thing and sad at the same time, Being exclusive will be high risk since the original couldn't bring the desired income to ensure it's survival "take in account it was released on PS360". It's great that we will get Bayo2 yet it doesn't seem like it will survive. Only time will tell.

wheresmymonkey3926d ago

Its got more chance of surviving with nintendo because they are not sales orientated when it comes to software.

Look at some of the great games they brought out for the wii that were never going to be huge sellers like punch out and sin and punishment 2.

They were never going to make a ton of cash or sell throught the roof but they made then anyway because fans wanted them and the wii was a good fit.

tehpees33926d ago

There were people on Neogaf saying "its stealing!"

Bayonetta 2 will end one of two ways. Either it flops and Sega will see that cancelling the game was the right decision. Or it succeeds and carries on. Nintendo may see promise in it and want to do future sequels.

If people want to throw the blame anywhere they should throw it at Microsoft and Sony. If they REALLY WANTED this game, they would have sorted it themselves.

fardan853925d ago

@Wheresmymonkey

As far as I remember Nintendo isn't a non-profit organization.
Publishers won't be support games which can't yield.

I think, Nin decided to fund Bayo2 because they expect this game can pull in some sony/ms gamers, and generate more hardware sales.

How many gamers will get Bayo2 on WiiU? currently, expected install base on WiiU is around 5 Mil, I'll be generous and say when Bayo2 released the install base will be 6 mil. How many gamer out of the 6 mil will purchase the game brand new?
on ps360, 15% from each platform buys cod.
again I'll be generous and say 15% of WiiU install base will get Bayo2. so let's see, 6* 15% = 0.9 "less than a mil".
Keep in mind that COD is way too famous and established, unlike Bayo, it's unlikely that the game will generate this kind of sales.

The game might survive, but as of now the odds are against them. I truly wish'em success, I enjoyed the first game, I hope the next one sells.

OmegaSlayer3926d ago

I call it therapeutic persistence

cootdog1233926d ago

It wasn't that good of a game just imo.

dark-hollow3926d ago

From gameplay point of view, I can't see how any hack and slash fan could hate bayo. It gameplay was way WAY much better than any hack n slash game this generation. I would even compare it to dmc 3 and ninja gaiden black.

The story and the dialogue on the other hand is either love it or hate it.

AzureskyZ3926d ago

I think so as well-- the combat really shined but the story was pretty bad in my opinion-- i think from a marketing standpoint this game would sell better on ps or xb than nintendo but its better than the alternate of no game at all and besides wii u really need exclusive titles beyond their own franchises right now.

killbillvolume123926d ago (Edited 3926d ago )

Is it just me or does it sound like out of frying pan into the fire. Like don't get me wrong if they almost failed on ps3/xbox with that install base, what chance does the wiiu version have....

dark-hollow3926d ago

As long as they break even, who knows if Nintendo will continue supporting the franchise. Hell they are supporting fire emblem franchise which are niche games with very small fanbase (besides the latest awakening which was a huge success for the franchise)

jcnba283926d ago

I know quite a few people who are buying a Wii U solely for Bayonetta 2. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up outselling the original Bayonetta.

JuleyJules3925d ago

That's very true that it could do very well. You have to consider that on PS360 it was just another game in a jumble of similar games. On Wii U it will be a unique game with not a lot of similar games to compete with. Wii U owners want something new and different and to those who don't own PS360 (or the new ones) it will be. Others who regularly buy more than one system might have played the first one and want more. I have not played the original but I can't wait to get my hands on this one!!

wheresmymonkey3926d ago

It all depends how well nitendo market it. I have no doubt its going to be a good game.

I also don't think it was a failure on the 360/ ps3 i just think that sega had unrealistic sales predictions. Something nintendo don't do.

At the same time as a publisher i think they have a weird brandoeque attitude to what they put out. They make the marios and the zeldas and wii sports type game, the things that will make a ton of cash so they can then take a loss on their more neiche games
and it doesn't matter.

smashbrolink3924d ago

With the install base and all the gamers that loved action games at the time, I'd say the first game on the PS360 sold terribly.
Point blank; these gamers are whining because Nintendo is getting a core game that they don't feel the Wii U deserves to have.
It's a pride issue, little more.

ritsuka6663926d ago (Edited 3926d ago )

what chance does the wiiu version have'

Considering the First one sold 1.35 million from a quick google search, on 2 very established systems over a year,1 million worldwide hopefully, which by new console standards will probably be well.

Acquiescence3926d ago

is the final nail in the coffin for the franchise.

_QQ_3926d ago

The final nail was already in, as a matter of fact the coffin was in the grave, but Nintendo dug it out just in time.

smashbrolink3924d ago

Change that to being a PS4 or One exclusive and you'd be right.
Because, just like the first one, few if any would have bought it.
Nintendo gamers, on the other hand.....well, I know quite a few gamers who went multiplatform for games like Bayonetta.

dark-hollow3926d ago

I'm very glad Nintendo supported a dying franchise. These kind of games deserve another chance. Now I want someone to fund shenmue III.... ):

killbillvolume123926d ago

Yep i 100% agree with you, now if only someone did that to final fantasy. :D

Hideki Kamiya On Why He Left PlatinumGames, His YouTube Channel, and His Next Game

In a wide-ranging interview with IGN, game developer legend Hideki Kamiya reveals why he left Bayonetta maker PlatinumGames and what's next.

darthv72158d ago

Long shot here but with him out of the picture... MS could get PG to finish Scalebound. As it is, the project was shelved and Ms still had all the work they had done up to that point. HK's mismanagement of multiple projects is what caused MS to pull the plug, but I feel they still wanted to get it done at some point.

gold_drake156d ago

if MS hasnt picked it up yet,it will never return. it was cancelled in 2017. 6 years ago.

MS owns the IP, not PlatinumGames.

Cacabunga156d ago

I have been waiting for a new Vanquish for a long time!! I barely imagine how the result could be on PS5

isarai158d ago

Sounds like Tencent influence was something he wasn't down with.

Levii_92157d ago

Sorry, you have been blocked by Hideki Kamiya. ❌

Zenzuu157d ago

“My work with Platinum Games was based on a relationship of trust with the company. I decided to leave because I felt that the direction the company was heading in was different from my beliefs as a developer. Without that element of trust, I couldn’t continue working there, and so I left, so that I could continue working in what I consider to be the right way.

“I don't think of games as products, but rather as works of art. I want to put my artistry into games and deliver games that could only be made by Hideki Kamiya, so that players can enjoy Hideki Kamiya games exactly as they are. I decided to leave the company and forge my own path, to continue making games that reflect the developers who made them.”

Hideki Kamiya Would Like to Make New Viewtiful Joe and Okami Games, Comments on Bayonetta's Future

Legendary developer Hideki Kamiya said that he'd like to make new Viewtiful Joe and Okami games with Capcom, he commented on the future of Bayonetta and on the possibility of collaborating with other creators like Tomonobu Itagaki.

XiNatsuDragnel180d ago

I hope he makes new ip in the future

lucian229179d ago

please no more viewtiful joe; game was cool the first time but i really dislike the whole look and attitude of it.

either make a new okami or a new ip

PRIMORDUS179d ago

I want a new Viewtiful Joe as well, and also Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 remade from the ground up for Switch. 😎

lucian229179d ago

pretty sure the visuals would have to be turned down; switch isnt strong enough to handle ps2 games

shadowknight203179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

Comedy at its finest. Upvote from me. Bought a switch twice, it's fun, but man, I always forget how Nintendo does things differently, I don't necessarily hate on it, but u gotta really stick with first party titles to enjoy there systems. And that wasn't always the case for them. Once upon a time.

FinalFantasyFanatic178d ago

@Shadowknight203,

The Switch's first party titles amaze me, you can get games that look and run that well on such old tech, but it's hopeless for AAA third parties, It makes games like BoTW/ToTK look like miracles.

shadowknight203178d ago

@fanatic
It goes to show, maybe I don't know anything, but I feel Nintendo might have there own engine for there studios? Something that works hand in hand with there hardware. I don't know I don't read up on the tech side of Nintendo developers

FinalFantasyFanatic178d ago

@ShadowKnight203,

I know the physics engine they built for Zelda is pretty nuts to the point that most developers don't understand how it was possible to run something so complex on the Switch. But I also feel like Nintendo optimises their games like crazy, if you look at any game development documentaries on Youtube, you'll see that they optimise heavily for the hardware they have available.

i hope he quits the bs of cramming minigames in his games that deter replay value and distract from the main course

shadowknight203179d ago

But everyone loves playing sub games inside of games, hell maybe he can incorporate mini games inside of mini games, he could create the next big gimmick like quick time events were

Hideki Kamiya will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023

Hideki Kamiya will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023.

-Mika-239d ago

Phil better have that check ready. Hideki expertise and knowledge would be a great asset to the Xbox team and can possibly bring growth in the Asia region.

VersusDMC239d ago

Phil already canceled a Kamiya game(Scalebound) so we know he doesn't have the check ready. And that check couldn't keep Shinji Mikami there either...but maybe?

CrimsonWing69239d ago

I’m still bitter about that cancellation. Even if it was in dev hell he could’ve given it to an internal studio.

Obscure_Observer239d ago

@CrimsonWing69

"I’m still bitter about that cancellation. Even if it was in dev hell he could’ve given it to an internal studio."

Are you crazy???

That would be extremely disrespectful!

Michiel1989239d ago

@obscure as if one of ms's own studios would know how to get the game out the door in a great way. Remember what happened when they did that with Duke Nukem Forever?

20nmrtnz239d ago

Tencent and Netease around the corner: Bonjour!

AdonisIsBeast238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Was the 69 billion dollar acquisition plus 8 billion for Zenimax not enough lol?

-Foxtrot239d ago

How sudden, I wonder what changed.

Maybe after the certain story choices and direction for Bayonetta 3 they can hopefully make it more like the first two games.

justsomeoffdude239d ago

i've always felt platinum games lack of growth/failures can be traced back to kamiya. He seems like a very troublesome person to work with
