PlayStation 4 Meets Oculus Rift Concept Video

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has openly stated that it has teams that have been working with Oculus Rift, the stereoscopic 3D motion-tracking headset, and that they are interested in the prospect of bringing to PlayStation 4. However, while no deal has yet been officially announced, that hasn’t stopped artists from imagining just what a collaboration could look like.

it takes some getting used to - and some are more prone to get motion sickness, from the device, than others.

In our office, I'm one of the few who are unaffected.. But when I played TF2 as that runner double-jump guy (scout?), actively trying to make mysself motion-sick by jumping, spinning and looking around - it was "mission accomplished" :p

Well, my friend didn't know what to expect. He almost fell when I showed him Roller Coaster tech demo :D. But the biggest feature for me is zero lag. When you turn your head, there is no delay in-game. This makes OR very immersive. Resolution is on the low side though, and lenses get dirty pretty quickly. I really hope Sony and MS will adopt this baby for next-gen when it launches. I can honestly see myself playing on OR instead of TV.

@boing is the resolution low or is it because you so close the display that it becomes noticeable, zero lags amazing, I use glasses for distance so it wouldn't be a problem for me to take them off and use the rift, but could you get a pair of glasses inside if you were long sighted.

If you don't tend to suffer motion sickness you'll be fine. I find it great, others get a little woozy but they're not so used to dealing with Z depth in general.

The only thing is the resolution on the dev kit is low, when it's HD things are going to get real!

Actually this article is based on false information. Sony has not openly stated that it is working with Oculus Rift. And they have never stated that they are interested in bringing the Rift to the PS4. All of that is completely false.

All Shuhei Yoshida said is they have a dev kit and he loves it. Over 17 thousand developers have dev kits so this is hardly surprising.

I just keep thinking about how cool a game along the lines of resistance would be wearing one of these things and using the move gun. I suppose the same could be said of any shooter, or game even, but something about a massive alien invasion going on all around you would be awesome.

I agree. After having used the dev unit I can safely say that it is the most exciting thing on the gaming horizon by far. I will be getting the consumer model for the PC on day one, so if Rift support ever does come to the consoles I would hope that we can use our Rifts that we already own.

It simply interfaces through USB and HDMI so there is no reason it would have to be a special version.

I want the Rift to come to consoles simply because I want to be able to enjoy console exclusives in VR and because the more platforms that support VR the more VR games will be made.

That said, the best place for VR will definitely be the PC. This is because VR requires quite a bit of overhead due to the need for 60fps with a wide FOV in stereoscopic 3D. Consoles will only be able to work with simpler games or will be heavily compromised. I want to be able to play games with advanced next gen visuals in VR with no compromises.

Whilst I would love to see support for the Rift on the PS4 or Xbox I wouldn't like to see a Sony or MS branded licensed unit or copycat 'me too' product developed.

For me that would take something away from the genius and hard work of the Oculus team. To Joe public this headset would appear as a Sony invention when its not and credit where its due should be to Oculus.

If Sony or MS or Apple bought Oculus outright then that might be a different matter but I hope that doesn't happen and they remain impartial.

Sony already has the HMZ-T1 and T2 Personal 3D player out on the market actually. It doesn't track motion but it's pretty much the same concept. I own one which I use for GT5 and right now TLoU which creeps me the F*** out. But the Oculus looks like the better product for pure gaming though.

It's also not locked down to the PlayStation brand as it work for anything with an HDMI output.

So ebay is your best bet really at this point.

The HMZ-T1 really isn't the same thing at all. The only similarity is that they are both head mounted displays.

But the HMZ-T1 isn't a VR device. It doesn't have a very wide field of view like the Rift and it has no head tracking whatsoever.

The HMZ-T1 is like looking at a tv floating in front of you, while the Rift encompasses nearly your entire field of view, and has much better 3D, and super low latency head tracking. Those are the magic ingredients for VR.

Does the OR provide periphery view as well. I know it's hard to show in a 2D video, but this made it seem that there wasn't any sort of periphery...just a 3D display right in front of your face...plus the motion tracking stuff of course.

You now SEE the chains to your blade go out in PURE 3D in front of you, And when you look around you can target enemy's by looking at them ala EVE VR and in swiping arcs by looking and targeting many in a row.

Tank Games ala Battlezone / Lightning in planetside 2 for the planetside 2 players.

You sit in a REAL VR cockpit and when you look out you see the shells fly out thru the side, Or when you reload a big canon you can look out and see the giant shell jump out with a "cling"

Ala Ace Combat games:

Look out on the wing and rly see your wingman and keep an eye on him when he fly around you.

Don't forget that they probably 110% if this arrives will ad positional tracking.

what happened to the Sony VR/AR headset. THAT'S what I was looking forward to. The ability to melt your periperalls, your enivronment, even your body into the virtual world, that would of been cool, and I hope they are still doing it.

Why is it that all the coolest tech I see from Sony never comes to fruition or become easily consumable? The "Smart AR", 3D mapping projection(most immersive movie experience/Illumiroom), and now the AR/VR headeset smh, what are you doing?

I can virtually guarantee that if the consoles ever get Rift support it will be both consoles.

Oculus has made it very clear that they want to focus on the PC, but they are open to getting it on consoles if the platform holders decide they want it. They have also said that they will always remain independent as a company, so there is no way that the Rift would ever be exclusive to the PS4. If Sony decides to get it on their console, I am sure that MS will follow, and vice versa.
