A look at Xbox Smartglass

The second screen features of the next-generation consoles certainly was a huge focus at this year’s E3 convention, with many huge developers opting to utilize the touchscreen technology in their upcoming games. Xbox SmartGlass is one of these companion applications that allows you to use your phone or tablet to navigate your console, or get additional features or information for films, applications and games.

This feature is already available for the Xbox 360 system, allowing you to navigate through the dashboard and control certain applications whilst also giving you some additional features for certain games.

However, this is a feature that will undoubtedly be implemented in the next generation of consoles – so let’s take a look at what Xbox SmartGlass is actually offering now, and what developments we could expect in the future.

As long as second-screen stuff is implemented right (not gimmicky-feeling), it could be interesting. That phone call thing in Dead Rising sounded interesting. Imagine if you're playing a game where someone gets kidnapped and you have to rescue them. What if they periodically called you (YOU) and were crying for help (for tone, think of the beginning of TWD -- the voicemails) or giving you a clue to where they were. It would certainly add to the emotion and intensity of the experience.

Zombi U is a good example of second-screen centric gameplay done right.

Kevlar0093921d ago

It lent really well to the tension. The fact you had to both manage your inventory and make sure you weren'y getting attacked at the same time made every second precious and real.

The fact you get Smartglass all the time with the WiiU is its best feature. I really hope Ubisoft went ham with it when they were making WatchDogs for the WiiU

PositiveEmotions3921d ago

Thats actually a very cool feature

Nyromith3921d ago

I don't care for a second screen. Truly immersive games allow me to dive into the game, merge with the controller and forget about everything around me.

Having to look back and forth between screens can only damage the immersion.

Kevlar0093921d ago

Going to Smartglass everytime you get a call in WatchDogs would increase the immersion, like you are getting the call

Also don't confuse immersion with simplicity. While something may increase the interactivity sometimes it can seem a bit excessive

andibandit3921d ago

I imagine that if a came like gta4 had implmented this, I would break my phone each time Brucie called :-)

JBSleek3921d ago

I think a huge advantage of smartglass is that it is compatible with all phones and tablets which gives it a huge install base.

iamnsuperman3921d ago

I think that helps, big time, but it also hinders them as well (the couldn't do a remote play type thing without buttons. They are very much limited to add on type gameplay and not core stuff). It was The only choice Microsoft could do without making a dedicated handheld. I personally think this second screen gaming will die in 2 to 3 years (like 3D gaming, in a way, has) when developers realise the average gamer just doesn't care. They will think it is cool but as long as they can just kill some guy online in the exact way they do now; they will not use it. Even in single player games is it really more emmersive to do an airstrike or talk to a fake character on your phone? Not really

Windows 10 Xbox app gets Xbox One SmartGlass tech for future game streaming

Microsoft is migrating several functions formerly reserved for its Xbox One SmartGlass mobile app into the Xbox app for Windows 10, as it increasingly ties the Xbox One console to PCs and mobile devices. SmartGlass is a “second screen” app that was originally written for Windows Phone, allowing it, for example, to control aspects of a connected Xbox One.

Very cool , W10 is going to be a blast.

mhunterjr3338d ago

I don't have a gaming PC, but the idea of being able to play my Xbox from any room in the house, is very appealing to me!

I have been reading some threads people trashing MS for the streaming pc n x1.. But I love it!!! Going to lot better n more up to date games, then what Sony doing with ps now streaming Old games at a high price,.. I really think MS is going to nail the cross platform n streaming....

ThatOneRiggaNob3338d ago

People will trash Microsoft for anything they do. It's just the way this gen works. Also I don't see why you mentioned ps now since it's an actual streaming service and Xbox to win10 streaming is just you streaming your already owned games to a pc. They're not the same thing at all.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3338d ago

The streaming feature is definitely a positive. I have no idea why anyone would think that cross platform streaming would be a bad thing.

That was to be expected. Good job MS. Keep the great games and features coming. By next year, I wont be surprised if they say the Xbox can transform

JohnJ3541d ago

Everyone I know who owns an xbox one, Is absolutely loving it. I have both and love both but I have to be honest, the xbox one is the better console.

Bonkerz3541d ago

I have to agree, i play a PS4 daily (my bestfriend has one and we live next to eachother) and even when he comes here he is blown away with all the features and stuff that can be done on the X1. The PS4 is a great console obviously but at this point in time hands down the X1 is better choice.

4Sh0w3541d ago

That's really awesome, I use my Samsung Galaxy phone to constantly stay updated with Xbox news, love android and this is just 1 more way I can use my phone to interact with my X1 gaming addiction.

Assault93541d ago

Is their a point to this?
Oh I see, the future of no kinect.

timlot3541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

Its really amazing how much effort they are putting in the platform. Every other day there is news of this new feature or that update. Can't wait for what next week is going to bring.

PsylentKiller3541d ago

I teals like this feature. Since is play mostly at night while my GF is sleeping, it's difficult to get the kinect to hear me when whispering. Now, I can just tap my phone. This is also good if there is a lot of background noise.

tgunzz3541d ago

Xb1 has so much to offer... I hope more, and more gamers pick one up, and enjoy it awesome feature set, and games... Game on.

AutoCad3541d ago
