Sakurai Confirms Drastic Changes In New Smash Bros. Game

CCC says: "In a bi-weekly column in Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai, the famed developer for the Super Smash Bros. series, confirmed that the upcoming Wii U and 3DS Smash Bros. titles will not involve a story mode. Sakurai quoted the Internet, of all things, as being the reason that Nintendo has decided against creating a story mode. Supposedly, information simply travels too fast these days for such a mode to be enjoyable."

what engine are they using for this game? Some of the rendering reminds me of Soul Calibur V's.

LoaMcLoa3933d ago

I think Namco helped them with the engine and they created Soul Calibur so that is very possible

3-4-53933d ago

Game sounds good.

Character & Stage Customization is always a good thing for replay value.

lilbroRx3933d ago

I hope this "drastic changes" aren't more cut content to make more appealing to tourney gamers.

kornbeaner3933d ago

Why not? I like to play through fighting game stories as well, but the casual is not what keeps these games alive. It's the Tournament player that does that. Melee just drew one of the biggest crowds ever for a fighting game stream and it was all due to the fighting game community. If Nintendo wants to support that more, that will be the smartest thing they could do considering it's that community that help raise almost $100,000 for breast cancer research while at the same time keeping alive a 10 year, 2 generations back game.

dark-hollow3933d ago

I hate the tournament scene mentality with this game.

No items, no smash balls, no dynamic stages, your favourite character is probably banned, fox only final destination.

It's like they try hard to converts smash to something that it isn't.
Just play street fighter if you want a balanced fighter.

Adamated3933d ago

@dark-hollow

The great thing about the Smash Bros series, is that it can be whatever you want it to be. You can put items on and make a wild game where anyone can win, veteran or newcomer. Or, you can display your individual skill by going mono-e-mono (is that spelled right?) with your opponent. That's why these games are so timeless imo. Everyone can find something fun about it.

Also, didn't Sakurai say that he was going to have more people be involved in the balancing of characters? I believe he said that he noticed how some characters still managed to be overpowering despite his best efforts.

Slowbrosef3933d ago

@Adamated it's "Mano a Mano" bro, in Spanish it means hand to hand.

Panthers3933d ago

This game just has an extremely low skill ceiling. It does not really need to be altered for the tournament scene. Its fun to watch and that is enough.

But it will never compete with the skill of other games, unless they turn it into something it should not be.

admiralvic3933d ago

Tournaments are important for fighting games, but catering to that demographic would greatly damage SSB. The game is designed to be a party fighter, which means it doesn't have as much balance and is designed to be a little more "unpredictable" in the sense that skill won't always beat luck. This is the same sort of logic you see in Mario Kart, as you could be in first with a huge lead, but still ultimately lose because of a well timed blue shell.

@ Adamated

This could be said about most games (like how people note that you don't HAVE to use the OPed weapons and then complain that you elected to do so) and while they should be able to do what they want, they're also largely defeating the point of the game. As I already mentioned above, SSB is meant to be a zanny game where skill is important, but luck is just as important. One lucky dynamic element or item and you can come back to win or lose a certain victory. It's like playing Mario Kart without using any of the items and then making it a tournament racer. Same concept, but again, defeats the point of it.

Benjaminkno3933d ago

EXACTLY!! Bubble up dude!!

I never really got why Melee was "so much better" than Brawl.

Brawl had so much high replay value for me. It was better than I could've hoped.

I guess I understand the mechanics were more smooth and even in Melee, but whatever.

I think cutting out the movie scenes is dumb.
90% of smash brothers players won't be looking online for the cut-scenes.
That's just silly.

kupomogli3932d ago

@kornbeaner

Marvel vs Capcom 3 had the highest amount of viewers.

Also. Hardcore fighting game fans don't keep fighters alive. The casual fanbase sells a hell of a lot more games than the hardcore do. At most, the hardcore fighting game fan will push at most 100,000 sales, and Nintendo is known to bash their own games for not selling more than several million.

ShinMaster3932d ago

@dark-hollow

No items or dynamic stages keep fights fair and even. You can't have a proper competitive match with random elements. ESPECIALLY TRIPPING which was meant to piss off competitive players, you know, the ones that play the game the most.

And if it wasn't meant to be played that way, then the option to do so would not have existed from the beginning.

Friggin'... the most ANNOYING thing about playing any Smash game with friends is no one ever wants to play with damn items. They never want to play on any dynamic stages and they use the same motherfriggin' characters over and damn over.

I HATE this mentality with Smash Bros. It's not that kind of game! Smash is as much a fighting game as it is a party game, akin to a cross between Mario Party and Tekken. Keep the items and stages in because it's, you know, supposed to be FUN.

Edit: That's not to say people can't play 1v1 tournament style, mind you. I don't mind that. But if you're going to bother having free-for-alls, put the damn items in there so it can be more hectic and less skilled players have a fighting chance; in other words the way it was meant to be played.

Panthers3933d ago

Luckily all my friends loved items. But we turned off certain ones.

The most fun was turning items on high and only having pokeballs.

KillrateOmega3933d ago (Edited 3933d ago )

Eh, I've never liked items; however, I keep the Final Smash Ball in if only because I know all my friends love it. I'm down for dynamic stages and though I main Marth, I'm cool with random character selects. I just feel like items turn the fight into giant clusterf*ck, especially when they're set to High.

Benjaminkno3933d ago

Idk...

a lucky Star or Donkey Kong hammer is annoying.

I like the items that aren't so meaningful, like the banana peel, smoke bomb, and Mr. Saturn.

Four people, all items on highest setting.. pass

ShinMaster3932d ago

I used to play like that... as a kid.

No story mode is fine as long as there is still an 'Adventure mode'.

I don't mind the lack of modes, is just the dumb reason they're giving it : /

Don't care what anyone says, Smash isn't a traditional fighting game. May as well call Powerstone and Playstation All Stars fighting games. They're more of an arena fighter /party game.

NotoriousWhiz347d ago

You don't have to care what anyone says. It's not a traditional fighting game. But it is a fighting game.

Not according to the creator, Sakurai. Link below

CrimsonWing69347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

I mean what makes them an arena fighter than say something like Tekken? Because there’s platforms?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21347d ago

because theres a bunch of pokeballs and other random stupid stuff on stage that you can use at your advantage and flying ultra super power ball that you got to chase on the stage to get your ougi LMAO.

CrimsonWing69347d ago

@NatsuXTheMaxspeed21

I mean what it sounds like is they took a fighting game and “added” unique mechanics to it to me.

When I think arena game I think of things like Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand or Virtual-On.

Smash to me is a fighting game, they have fighting game tournaments for it. It just doesn’t jive with me to call it “not a fighting game” because you have poke-balls and platforms or because it has 4 players at once duking it out.

Power Stone I’d consider a fighting game as well. Hell, if you google what it is everyone calls these games “fighting games”. So yea, they’re fighting games…

Immagaiden347d ago

What’s next, you gonna say Mario Kart isn’t a racing game?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21347d ago

oh its a racer but its not a realistic one like GT or Forza. only kids check for mario kart and smash .

Immagaiden347d ago

I didn’t say it was realistic. I said racing game. Does Burnout not being realistic make it not a racing game?

What does a demographic have to do with a genre? Do kids playing CoD make it any less an FPS? You see how ridiculous bringing up that subject is?

repsahj346d ago

"Only kids and kids at heart check for mario kart and smash".

-fixed!

FallenAngel1984347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

Nobody said it was a traditional fighter. Everyone acknowledges it as a platform fighter

PSASBR & Power Stone are fighting games, the former being a platform fighter and the latter an arena fighter

gleepot346d ago

You're correct, it isn't traditional. It's a fighting game though.

repsahj346d ago

Because if cute and lovable characters are fighting it's not a fighting game? XD As long there's a versus fighting, it is a fighting game.

MrNinosan347d ago

Including Smash Bros in a list of fighting games, is like including GTA in Racing games.

NotoriousWhiz347d ago

I hate to break it to you but smash bros has fighting game tournaments so it qualifies.

MrNinosan347d ago

"and here's how it competes against other fighters"

No, Mortal Kombat doesn't compete with games like Smash Bros? It's a different genre for a different audience.

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21347d ago

Anybody can host a tournament in their garage it doesnt mean it qualifies.

NotoriousWhiz347d ago

I'm going to assume you're not part of the FGC. However, I am, and I can tell you that there is a ton of overlap between people who play smash competitively and those who play other fighting games competitively.

Now for casuals, there is a lot less overlap between the two for sure.

PapaBop347d ago

While technically true, Leffen comes to mind, FGC and Smash community have always had a rocky relationship.

Thundercat77347d ago

And yet, If Smash Bros was over 80 million, you wouldn't be complaining. On the contrary, you would be bragging about it.

Immagaiden347d ago

Bad comparison. You do a LOT of things in GTA outside of a car while fighting is what you’re mainly doing in SSB

Ezio2048347d ago

Given the volume of games released, I would say Tekken has sold the best.

lodossrage347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

Yeah, that's a good point. Most of these games have parts to the franchise outside of traditional fighting games.

Like for example, with Mortal Kombat, do Special Forces, Mythologies: Sub: zero, and the Kollection count?

With Tekken does death by degrees or the tag tournament games count?

With Street Fighter, are we counting all the iterations of 2, 3, and 4? how about the ex series or alpha series?

There are a lot of variables at play here

Ezio2048347d ago

Even after including Tekken Tag, they have less titles compared to all MK and SF games.

CS7346d ago

Yeah, i realized that too. Very interesting.

Nintendo will not allow Super Smash Bros. on the Evo 2022

Kim writes: "Super Smash Bros. will not be shown at Evo 2022, this year's biggest fighting game event. The Sony-owned sports organization announced the loss of the platformer in a statement on Twitter today, and seemed to blame the decision on Nintendo, which has historically tried to control how their games appear in the wild."

The moment Sony acquired EVO the writing was on the wall. A big loss for EVO.

blackblades793d ago

Sony acquiring them had nothing to do with it. Nintendo fault.

AnotherGamer793d ago

That has nothing to do with Sony though.

ZeekQuattro793d ago

Yeah I'm supposed to believe that Nintendo who has been apart of Evo since 2007 up and leaves after Sony acquires Evo is just a coincidence. Yeah okay.

Michiel1989792d ago

pretty sure Sony would allow them to compete. But nintendo has seen all smash bros tourneys as free advertisment from the community, instead of providing setups/games etc they demand that you play their adds on the tourney and put up posters with their newest game instead of actually supporting the competitive smash scene. They just piggybank off them. Now that Sony runs it they wont get free advertisement over there, thus fuck over their smash community by not allowing having it at EVO.

Brazz792d ago

Also big loss for smash community.

Vengeance1138792d ago

Huge loss for Nintendo, could have been huge PR for Smash and to further the titles reach and to gain even more players but Nintendo is happy to let it slip into nothingness. No new content is coming to Smash so literally all it has left is potential tournaments.

In away this hurts Nintendo Smash Bros has some dedicated fans. What better way to help build hype and sell more of the game then showcasing it at EVO.

Atom666793d ago

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

They wanted more control, which led to starting up their pro circuit. We'll see if it works out.

EVO's recent troubles probably played a part in the decision, but my bet is that they were planning this for awhile.

-Hermit-792d ago

Because it's Nintendo, they just don't get it. They are so ass backwards. At this point, they deserve to get left behind by everybody else. The only reason why they remain relevant is because they appeal to nostalgia.

Neonridr792d ago

except they are currently the most successful. Left behind, lol. Cute Hermit.

-Hermit-792d ago

@Neonridr

I never said they are left behind, I said they deserve to be. Nintendo hasn't done a single positive thing for gaming for a very long time now.

They are anti consumer, release weak and overpriced hardware and shit out the same games to appeal to nostalgia. They don't put any effort into their "remasters" they go after fans for making fanmade games, they go after emulation when they don't give a damn about their older games.

They charge to play online for the Switch after it was free for a year and are behind every single company when it comes to online infastructure. They make it difficult to back up save games. They lock content behind those crappy Amiibos. They sell cardboard to people because they are too cheap to develop actual good hardware to go alongside their console. They go after people streaming Nintendo games.

I would argue that Nintendo are less consumer friendly than the likes of EA, and that's saying something.

whitbyfox792d ago

They just announced 48 new Mario Kart tracks for free with the expansion pass, that’s a whole new game for free.

You must have missed that one.

luckytrouble792d ago

@whitbyfox

"Included with the expansion pass" is not free. It's part of what you're paying for with your subscription fee. I get people try to call things included in subscriptions free to help rationalize costs involved with this subscription heavy model that has taken over, but the addition of something in a pretty unanimously agreed upon to be an overpriced subscription isn't Nintendo being nice; they're trying to incentivize people to finally see the cost of the expansion pass as a good value. In this case though they already established the cost of permanent ownership, which I'm sure was forced low to not over value the subscription, so you know that pack is actually worth $25. It's not free in any sense of the word, and Nintendo is only trying to do themselves a favor with this move.

whitbyfox791d ago

@luckytrouble

We never knew we were getting the Mario Kart tracks, we thought we were just paying for the N64 Megadrive and Animal Crossing DLC so it’s free to me.
