E3 2013: Warframe Demo Impressions - STFUandPLAY

Tony Polanco from STFUandPLAY writes, "Warframe was originally a PC exclusive title. Thanks to the power of the PlayStation 4, gamers who don’t want to sell a kidney to buy a beastly PC can try it out. I saw this bad boy on the show floor and gave it a whirl. Here’s what I thought.

The demo I played had myself and three other players participated in what was essentially a horde mode. We had to fend off and survive five waves of enemies. The game is a third person shooter which is great because I could actually tell what the hell was going on. The character I played as had 3 standard weapons, a handgun, assault rifle and a sword."

Warframe is optimized very well, a cheap $80 amd cpu and a mid end graphics card can run it maxed at 1080p which would cost a little more than a next gen console to build.

I'm running it on a 4 year old PC with an average graphics card event for that time. It works and looks great.

I'm excited for this on ps4.

People who have already played this on PC are likely going to own first time PS4 users in PvP.

I wouldn't worry too much about that specific aspect, namely because as of right now PvP has just been introduced to the game, and it's not traditional PvP, and the majority of players haven't even touched it yet due to the astronomical material costs needed to build these parts in the clan dojos. They detailed that they'll be fixing a lot of the dojo rooms' material costs in their next update, but even at that point the PvP right now isn't even close to being more than a side-thought.

Given Digital Extreme's remarks and discussions, I'm sure in the future we'll see more from PvP overall but early PS4 players won't be at too much of a disadvantage, namely because there isn't really a single go-to kind of build, and leveling in Warframe doesn't take tremendously long. I'd say that with a couple of serious playing, you could max a Warframe (class) and a couple weapons, since the cap right now on everything is level 30. Every Warframe has their own benefits and downfalls.

What I am concerned about however, and what my main hope from all this positive talk is, would be them announcing that they were able to finalize an agreement with Sony to keep all the accounts working cross-platform. I have a lot of friends on PS3 that will be getting a PS4 and I'd love to show them the game, but I wouldn't completely restart my account on PS4 just for that and better controller support.

Its a lot of fun and all, but if you want to be able to do much, you'll need to drop in at least $10 to $20 to buy additional slots to accommodate more Warframes and weapons as you begin with only two slots for Warframes and 4 slots for weapons (which isn't much, unless you only play very casually). Most of the rest of the items can be found in-game (aside from color palettes), so otherwise it's just very time consuming to hunt for the blueprints to make new Warframes and weapons, and to hunt for the materials needed for all that as well as the clan dojo. Those things considered, I don't think I'd want to do as much as I have all over again, so I am very hopeful for cross-platform access.
