Microsoft On Xbox One: "We Need To Do Better In Terms Of Being Clear"

NowGamer: Major Nelson has stated that "there is no doubt we need to do better in terms of being clear" in response to a comment on Reddit asking for clarification with certain aspects of Xbox One.

You think? Not a single gamer actually knows how the used game fee actually works. That is something we should have known at the actual reveal. You explained it, but it wasn't clear.

Also they have to go into more detail at E3. The controller looked nice but they didn't even state the improvements, we found out by IGN or GameSpot. They really have to step up their E3 conference because I didn't really enjoy the reveal, it had its ups and downs but I think in order for MS to regain the interest in the hardcore Xbox gamers again is to do an amazing job at E3. ms said they had 15 games, "15 exclusive titles" means nothing if Microsoft won't say what they are. They could all be Kinect shovelware so I hope they clear that up.

So far, no offense, but Microsoft don't seem to have the faintest clue themselves how the One works - every rep says a different thing. And they haven't even tried to spin all the negatives into positives for gamers. e.g. If tying the game to my account means I don't need the disk to reinstall or play, why wasn't that mentioned? Makes me assume the worst.

You MUST address OR debunk the rumours (hopefully debunk) You have one more shot MS...

TimmyShire4017d ago

I agree. They always said that E3 was going to be about the games, and the reveal was about the hardware and what it will do.

They did that.

But the problem is, the majority of the world's people watching the conference was gamers, and gamers want games. That's what Microsoft didn't understand. This was their chance to really sell the Xbox One and they didn't. They only disappointed people and confused the rest.

pompombrum4017d ago

"there is no doubt we need to do better in terms of being clear" said the Microsoft employee without clearing anything up.

Microsoft's problems run deeper than them overestimating their console reveal's appeal.

gaffyh4017d ago

It's just plainly obvious that they have no clue what to do after the backlash regarding the used games stuff, so they are literally stalling for time. They just keep saying stuff, but providing no real information, but at E3 they will have to be clear. And by clear, they need to come out and say, in the first five minutes:

"You don't need to connect online to play a game ever, you don't need to install it if you don't want to, you don't need check in online every 24 hours, and you can sell your games privately or lend them to a friend without any issues."

thechosenone4017d ago

biggest bunch of horse sh*t, they've had more than enough opportunities to explain it to their users and this is how they chose to break it down. it's faking insulting.

DARK WITNESS4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Well just so you know I am being very clear right now. I have no intention of buying that ridiculous looking VHS box until you become clearer about whatever it is you feel you need to be clear about...

DARK WITNESS4017d ago

lets be real about this, MS thought they had found yet another perfect way to make money off the back of something that has always been free.

They knew what their fan bases thoughts were towards this.. I mean the rumors and been going round the net for like the last 3 or 4 months before the reveal. They did and said Nothing to dispel those rumors.

They thought that when it was time to show the console they would just flash us a few shots of Forza and tell us how awesome Cod Ghost is going to be with Dogs in it and these issues would simply just go away from our thoughts.

We all know how stupid gamers are, they make a load of noise for 5 min and then jump off the cliff like lemmings as soon as the next trailer or game is out!

What they didn't count on was the backlash would be so hard it would seep through to even the more mainstream media out lets and who pays attention to that stuff... the casual market.

Now they are banking on E3. Forza and Cod was not enough to brainwash us so they are hoping that a new halo game and some more demo's of kinect will do the trick.

do they have the ballz to come out and clearly state where they stand now?

Remember when the rumors first started everyone kept saying there was no way they would be stupid enough to try and pull something like this off, yet here we are!

personally I have lost that much faith in them that I really would not be surprised if non of this gets a mention at E3 and they just hope that after we see this awesome line-up of 15 exclusives this whole storm will just go away an everyone will remember why we love the xbox sooooo much (exclusive DLC and kinect games)

amiga-man4017d ago

Just to clear up his statement about being clearer, roughly translated it means how much crap like DRM always online etc can we get away with, once we figure that out we will then be clear.

Boody-Bandit4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

MS needs to stop the hyperbolae and have a representative of their company sit down with a responsible (if they can find one) member of the media. Give flat out straight answers to ALL the questions and concerns consumers have regarding the XBOX ONE. Until then STFU because all we hear is filler and noise.

All of these "we need to do a better job of getting our message across" is pure nonsense. I said it before and will keep saying it, "It's not the messenger, it's their message." I believe most of the consumers concerns are spot on accurate and now they are caught in a sh!t storm trying to cash in (additionally) on their popularity.

Just like DW wrote above me. They just thought they could keep piling on fees and restrictions as a way to make even more money off the backs of dedicated gamers by showing us the games we want to see. We will sit and bitch and moan but our faces will glaze over like zombies and off to the retail we go to buy our precious.

Not happening MS. Most of the gamers I know are hardcore 360 and XBOX (original) fans. I only know a couple that are still considering purchasing the ONE. We aren't THAT stupid. We believe these concerns to be spot on accurate or else you guys would sit down and flat out address every one of them.

Boody-Bandit4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Another thing.

No MS you don't have to be more clear. You need to give the consumer what they want and not what you want to implement on the consumer.

Especially when it's adding unnecessary restrictions and fees on top of it. You have your best interest in mind and not the consumer. There can be a happy medium. It doesn't have to be one or the other. You will soon learn the consumer dictates where the industry goes, not vice versa.

Watch out MS. Your slip (greed) is showing.

fr0sty4017d ago

It's good to see a little humility, admitting a mistake is the first step to fixing it. However, some of the things they already have been very clear about still disturb me.

Army_of_Darkness4017d ago

I got 99 problems, but xbone ain't one;-)

andibandit4017d ago

At the reveal they've should've spent 20 seconds saying that there will be just 3 games today as they are saving most of them for E3

cell9894016d ago

no they didnt even revealed the hardware correctly, we still dont even know what type of Ram it has, what clock speed is the cpu running, we dont even know if it has blutooth or not, aweful hardware reveal, great TV presentation though and lots of Callaawdoweee

EVILDEAD3604016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

Blessing in disguise.

Major Nelson couldn't have understated the whole 'we need to be clear' statement any further.

MS not only needs to be clear at this point, they need to shout it from the rafters if they arent going to use ridiculous policies that don't make any sense to the average gamer.

If not they will open the floodgates for the wave of negativity which they will at that point completely deserve.

Evil

insomnium24016d ago

OMG evil. Does....your comment actually make............sense...?

You calling MS's policies ridiculous? I think I need to lay down for a while. This is all too much.

garos824017d ago

well said. instead of "wanting to be more clear" how about you be more clear.
every time they are asked to answer a question they skip around it and make the people ask even more questions.

they need to do a lot of work to win back the core gamers and e3 should be a start.
im still skeptical though they will deliver because i believe even they dont know how to address consumers concerns. they comitted themselves to rented games and drm policies and they have now seen the backlash.making changes is not as easy as it seems..

Typical-Guy4017d ago

No one knows how the system itself works.. Everything is ambiguous !

SilentNegotiator4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

We know this much from MS VP's comments:

1) There will be universal DRM.
2) Regular online checks, likely 24 hours.
3) It will 99% probably require people to pay to play used games (since playing a borrowed game without the original buyer's account requires this, and they have infinitely less reason to attack people borrowing than used sales).

They've said enough for me to absolutely never buy one. I had an okay experience with Xbox classic, a declining, faulty, but fun experience with 360, but I will have absolutely no experience with Xbox One and all of its BS.

cell9894016d ago

oh hell yes we do, based on all of the statements by MS employees. You must abide by the following rules:

DRM is a must
Internet connection is a must
Kinect always watching is a must
Used Games fees are a must

What else do you want to know that already doesnt turn you off to buy this BS console

DOMination-4017d ago

They definitely need to be more clear on... practically everything - but lets not also forget, Sony have been just as ambiguous on some of the same issues and they've had four months to clear up some of them as opposed to the two weeks MS has had. Both are guilty of this. MS more so for sure, but I think it's an important point to make.

nypifisel4017d ago

Sony never said anything they later retracted nor had different answers on the same question. If Microsoft didn't wanted to talk about it they just should've said so, like Sony did. It's not looking good. and even though Microsoft said E3 will be all about the games I seriously doubt it will all be about the gamer - I'm pretty sure there will be lots of less than stellar showings of Kinect.

Ausbo4017d ago

Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with thier contradicting answers. It wouldve been better to not comment on used games at all until they get thier act together. I hope they clear this up at e3

Gazondaily4017d ago

@ above

It doesn't change the fact that Sony have been just as ambiguous they does it, regardless of MS' supposed contradictions?

I'm just as confused about Sony's position regarding this as I am Microsoft's.

Boody-Bandit4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Sony WHAT?

Sony isn't using DRM.

You don't have to have the PSeye connected for the PS4 to work.

You can game offline with the PS4 and they don't require a constant internet connection. This whole 24 hour authorization is just a nonsensical way of saying you need a constant connection. Who turns on their gaming console every single day? I'm as hardcore gamer as one can be but I do have a life outside of gaming and go days if not weeks without powering my console. Therefore the XBOX ONE requires a constant internet connection.

Sony said they will support used games and rentals. Maybe the publishers and developers might charge something similar to online passes <- THAT is the only question we don't have a flat out answer concerning.

kreate4017d ago

I don't know how clearer Sony can get. They seem pretty clear to me. I understood everything they said at the conference loud and clear.

rainslacker4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Assume for a minute that Sony has just as many, or even some, of the same restrictions.

I say, "So the F*ck what?".

That makes MS no less culpable for their actions, and if Sony comes out and starts to be less clear, then have no doubt they'll have a major sh*t storm among gamers on their hands as well. Sony's slight ambiguity is nothing compared to MS constant confusion on the issue.

Basically, just because Sony might do it, doesn't make it OK for MS to do it.

Saigon4017d ago

I think people need to realize that MS is applying direct DRM to their console and not just the games. To me that is what makes me mad and should make most gamers mad also. The direct DRM applies that MS controls the content displayed on their console. Note that I said their console; I feel that way because if you purchase this system (XB1) MS controls the systems; you just play or use the purchased content. It's like you are renting the device. Sony however, decided to place the restriction or requirements on the publisher. So we could have instances where one publisher might apply DRM but another won't. I honestly think Sony's move was smart. Why? I technically believe the DRM rule is brewing another lawsuit. Seriously look at whats happening to EA with the online pass fiasco. It was smart by putting the pressure on the publishers and not Sony or the PS4. Lets say if Madden 25 has a DRM rule applied and you purchase it used for the PS4, EA is the ones to blame for the extra Money coming out of your pocket not Sony.

cell9894016d ago

to what I understood, which is a much more CLEAR answer than the politician-like responses we've been getting from MS. Sony wont be implementing DRM restrictions on their games, but at the same time it will allow publishers to do so if they prefer, just like they allow online passes on certain games, entirely up to the game publisher.

This is why I like SOny, theyve always been a way more open platform than XBOX, and its because XBOTS keep supporting MS that they keep trying to change the game, like charging for online play, implementing mandatory DRM, blocking used games, requiring internet connection, spying camera... all these BS requirements were non existent B4 MS entered the gaming console biz...

Saigon4016d ago

@ cell989

"all these BS requirements were non existent B4 MS entered the gaming console biz"

This statement, I have been saying for the last 2 years or so. We never had these requirements and MS is the one who brought these additions to the gaming world. Granted their methods changed the gaming world for the better in some areas, but for simplistic tools such as accessing the internet it was not needed. I don't understand why I have to pay for a service I already pay for through my ISP. What because I have to access your servers? Seriously, How many companies out in this world allow people to access their content for free for base services; well not MS. Methods like these are causing people to turn away from MS the next generation.

For example, My whole family all game on the X360, granted I have one, but my first console was a PS3. For years I didn't game with them because they were all on the X360. Before the new year I asked them all, what system they were going to get and they all stated they were sticking with Xbox. A month ago, before the reveal, they all changed their minds. Main reason, they didn't want to pay the additional money to game online. They said it was too expensive and the PS4 looks to be their console of choice.

In this case its not the message its the tactics.

"We Need To Do Better In Terms Of Being Clear"

What?!

Do they think all gamers are gullible kids?

Everything MS has done since the original xbox has been crystal clear to those who actually "think" analytically what kind of company MS is.

Better a formless and invisible ps4 where you can play actual games live than a visible plastic box from where you can play nothing live at all!
ROFL!
That xbox one box was just as good as paper weight right there on that show.

The joke is on you MS. You are fooling nobody but yourselves and your blind gulli-billies.

quenomamen4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Yea, you know you're in trouble when you start answering questions about a game console like you're on trial for racketeering or fraud, lol. Sammy the Bull on the witness stand was more forthcoming than these momos.

How about clearing things up... Instead of saying we need to clear things up.

DonFreezer4017d ago

I agree with most of your complaints but I have to add that the controller obviously looks much better than the ps4 one.The ps4 one looks like a cheap plastic pc gamepad. Disagree all you want ps drones I don't care since I know the amount of disagrees and bubble down votes before I make the comment on this site.

gman_moose4017d ago

The PS3 controller is perfectly fine, and from what I can tell they only improved it for the next gen. This is my opinion- I prefer the DS3 to the 360 pad.

I haven't gotten the complete details on how MS improved on theirs, but one thing they didn't do was give you a rechargeable lithium battery in it. How much more disrespect could they possibly show towards their customers? EVERYTHING uses an integrated battery now.

T24016d ago

you are an obvious troll. IGN website just did a poll and xbox even lost this category. And saying you slightly prefer xbox controller is one thing, but saying one is obviously better is obvious trolling.
For instance I prefer the sony controller because no stupid batteries, lighter, and i like the analog sticks better.
Xbox controller I like the trigger slightly better.
That's a real comparison.

MS stated it was JUST a console reveal and they did a brilliant job, much better than sony. However many seemingly gamers didnt hear console reveal and instead wanted games, well games is part 2
E3 next week.
Can we wait til E3 to see what MS and sony really have in store?

Yes, we have to.
Enough with the adlib BS

Hicken4016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

When you're revealing a video game console, games is part 1. That's why there was primarily gaming media present, and why the reveal was streamed to gamers through gaming websites.

There's no reason why we'd have to wait for E3. And Microsoft saying up front that there wouldn't be much in the way of games at the reveal doesn't make things better; it just gives us more indication of what they're doing with the Xbox One. Here's a hint: it's not gaming-related.

Not primarily, at least.

Sorry, but there's no way a console reveal that showed off almost NOTHING relating to what a video game console should do and be is better than a reveal that did everything gamers could have wanted.

Edit: You seem to have a problem comprehending most things. Here, and with the other comments, as well, you only respond to part of a sentence, or try to make some half-assed equation that makes NO sense.

It's pretty sad.

NO, showing off a few games doesn't change anything else about the console. And if those things don't change, why should anybody stop talking about them?

Who do you think you're fooling?

MikeMyers4016d ago

Hicken,

"Sorry, but there's no way a console reveal that showed off almost NOTHING relating to what a video game console should do and be is better than a reveal that did everything gamers could have wanted."

Fine. So after E3 we can expect you to talk about the games then right? It will be interesting after E3 how much of the discussion is about Xbox One games and not something else.

MikeMyers4016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

After all the complaints of no games for the hardcore on the Xbox 360, no new ip's from Microsoft, no focus on games at the Xbox One event, no gameplay shown at the Xbox One event, all that will now change once they do show games at E3 and the commentary from all those who never said anything good about the Xbox brand for years will simply focus on something else to complain about.

Exactly as I had thought. Like I said before, some people need to simply move on to greener pastures like Nintendo or what Sony is doing and stop bothering those who are actually interested in the Xbox or what Microsoft is offering.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF4016d ago

I find it funny that you people don't even consider that companies like this play dumb, and say and so something to get a public reaction to see what the affects will be. There is plenty of time to fix things.

I'm not a fanboy or anything, but everyone was pleased with the way Sony handled the PS4 reveal - it was games, games, games and a bit of tech to talk about how powerful it was. As far as consoles reveal go, I think that was one of the better ones.

But Microsoft didn't do enough to counter that. It should've seen what people reported on the PS4 - and how people responded - and done the same but better.

Instead it was TV, TV, TV, TV, TV, TV, COD dog.

And the people watching didn't care about that.

4017d ago Replies(1)
Ausbo4017d ago

I agree that sonys reveal was way better than microsofts. But arent you worried that sony might spend more time talking about the social aspect of ps4 and applications since they didnt touch on those features at the reveal?

Microsoft wanted to get thier hardware features out there and not have to worry about them at e3.

gman_moose4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

That's a cop-out. All the gaming media in defence of MS are saying this, but it's complete BS. Who the hell did they think they were presenting to? 90% of the crowd were gaming media... I would wager 99% of the people watching online were gamers. Showing some games may have been helpful. They could have shown a few gameplay demos, talked to celebrities about kinect less, and balanced it out at E3, but they clearly showed what they are all about.

As it stands now, there is no compelling reason to buy an Xbox one. That's what it's all about isn't it? As a gamer, which do I buy? The answer as of now is crystal clear. Announcing 15 exclusives including 8 new IP's is fantastic, but giving absolutely no detail on any of them makes the announcement irrelevant because we don't know what they are, or if they will appeal to anyone.

Zichu4017d ago

Well E3 is in 6 days. I hope they explain how it all works.
I also want to see the games, I mean some real games. Leave Kinect to the dashboard, but make it optional. The controller is where it's at for gaming and it has been since the beginning.

I don't want shooters, racing, on the rails, sports, etc. I want RPG's, action adventure, maybe some puzzles, etc.

RiPPn4017d ago

"I don't want shooters, racing, on the rails, sports, etc. I want RPG's, action adventure, maybe some puzzles, etc."

Then you want a PS4. :)

CraigandDayDay4017d ago

The PS4 will have both. That's the great thing about Sony: diversity.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies8d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX9d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody9d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP4d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_9d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga9d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie7d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly8d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga8d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit8d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_9d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21839d ago (Edited 9d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies8d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.
