Microsoft Xbox One 'a let down,' says Steven Butts of IGN

“As a gamer, I was a little let down,” Steve Butts, editor in chief of gaming website IGN, told FoxNews.com.

After seeing Microsoft's trailer for the ONE it's evident that they've lost their focus. The 360 showed Microsoft's serious side to gaming, and it was a good one as it gave gamers what they wanted; an intuitive online system, access to all of the best multiplatform games all binded together with a low asking price. However, after seeing the ONE Microsoft have tried to innovate, and failed.

Where do I begin? Well, maybe I should begin with this abomination:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Just watch it yourself. In a video that is 1:41 long(M:SS), only 7 seconds - yes, SEVEN SECONDS - are dedicated to gaming. That's 1/5 of the video made to sell a games console focused on actual games. Don't believe me? Count yourself. Now, call me old fashioned but I personally believe that to be atrocious, is the XBOX even a gaming machine anymore?

So yes, I believe Steven Butts hit the nail on the head. The ONE is a letdown because it has lost the core of the traditional gaming console: a concise focus on games.

Microsoft have lost their focus and unless they revert their tactics back to the ways of old they're going to quickly become irrelevant in the gaming industry.

I know this has been said before, but I can honestly see both Nintendo and Sony topping Microsoft in the generation to come. Of course, we'll see people buy the ONE just because it has the name "XBOX" on it (probably the children and casual gamers who have little education on what the system is and what's inside it), but we all saw how the WII U's sales skyrocketed after the disappointing ONE reveal. This will probably become a trend.

Nintendo and Sony, prepare to embrace top position again. It seems Microsoft have killed themselves in the gaming department. It's nice to see the company that separated in 1994 (Am I right on that) finally have an equal share of the gaming industry.

Games? What are those?

Microsoft always knows what's better for you and what you really want and will ram it down your throat whether you want it or not.

I guess that's why the xbone has a Blu-ray drive.

LAWSON724015d ago

They try to ram it down your throat, but the problem is you cant keep the crap down because you realize the competition has better products you already own.

horne2424015d ago

Close, the "Nintendo Play station" partnership fell apart spectacularly in 1991. But you're right, it would be pretty cool to see them both atop the market.

@Cam977

Very well said. Microsoft has definitely lost sight of whats important.

They have disregarded the gamer and chosen a more casual approach.

On top of disregarding the gamer, M$ are making anti consumer decisions.

No one should have to deal with any of the following

Mandatory online checks, mandatory kinect, no upgradeable hardware, indies gotta find publishers, mandatory hard drive installation, paid online play, used game fees and it won't allow use of xbox 360 headsets

Its sad when you see M$ giving the middle finger to the people who made xbox what it is.

I hope Sony and Nintendo both succeed this generation and I hope the xbox does not due to its practices.

Lol, wow even IGN knows Xbox One is a huge mistake for MS. Not looking good.

"Microsoft said the One was four years in the making -- is expanding into those areas due to a shrinking hardcore gaming market, and in an effort to expand the device’s reach."

MS is so out of touch, It's painful to watch seriously.

Retroman4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

X1 was the BIGGEST let down in gaming his-tory gamers history Dreamcast history.

maxgamehard4015d ago

The xbox one has got to be the biggest let down in xbox history.

Mandatory online checks, mandatory kinect, no upgradeable hardware, indies gotta find publishers, mandatory hard drive installation, paid online play, used game fees and it won't allow use of xbox 360 headsets

Its really sad when you look at what they are doing.

Don't worry Sony and Nintendo will take care of our gaming needs at E3.

Here are a couple of funny yet relevant links that should get a few laughs.

It may have been 4 years in the making...but I suspect it may not have been the last 4 years.. :/

I just wonder why would Microsoft be so cheap with their console. It's called a competition.

Or maybe it's like Battlefield vs COD

Battlefield being the PS4 and COD being the Xbox One

Battlefield focuses on true gameplay, immersion in game.

COD gives you all of these gimmicks and lights and flashes to make the game look good. Arcadey?

Anyway, PS4 looks like a purchase for people who wants the best GAMING experience.

creized14015d ago

I still can't believe people will be still be buying this console.
Even some of my not so close friends saying they will go with it.

ThatCanadianGuy5144015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

Everybody i know is furious and hates nextbox.Every comment i read, on damn near every site agrees.Nexbox is garbage in every aspect and would rather go with PS4.

The only ones i see defending it are user comments on Kotaku, and a few guys here on N4G.Everybody else has had enough with MS.

Who ever will support Microsoft this Gen, is clearly retarded, dumb as F*ck and really close minded.
Thankfully for us, we can see reality my friend.

LAWSON724015d ago

All my damn xbox fanboy friends wayched and they said it was awesome, mentioning sports and tv, and/or I am so excited for new cod it blew my mind. No I am not joking alot of my friends will probably buy it around launch. Man, do I need new friends, lol

creized14015d ago

I know exactly how you feel man haha,
It is like damn open your f*cking eyes xD

SHORYUKEN4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

Yeah I know how you feel.

My closest friend and really I know him all my life from when I was 6 year old till now. He is sinds the xbox thing totally xbox minded.

That went on almost 7 years. I bought the first xbox first and a month later he bought it to. But I already owned a PS2 that time so I was not impressed with the xbox.

My buddy just bought the PS3 3 years ago and still he is an xbox fanboy.

I am sick with this stupid fanboy thing. Microsoft start this console war and separate gamers. I hope Microsoft will jump out the gaming business soon.

IBleedXbox4015d ago

it is a disappointment to the gaming community. the want us to take all their shit and deal with it. they are the ones the are gonna deal with it when it launches.

Ashlen4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

I read this, and I feel for me they missed the point. I could care less about the TV stuff that's fine what ever. It's the DRM, and the proprietary stuff as well as the privacy issues. That is the reason i'm not interested.

It was remade last year for PC , Now released and OPTIMIZED and PORTED for/to Xbox and PS5, not “remade” just for consoles.

“it follows a critically acclaimed release on PC back in 2023” that’s because it’s the same work/game. it’s not following/follow up or a continuation. Author Sounds like they are taking a stab at an article and don’t know the product-line lineage and release history/ hierarchy they are attempting to inform you about.

More appropriately: System Shock was first rereleased in 2023 on PC, System shock is now available on PS5 and Xbox.
