Xbox One games are locked to Xbox Live accounts, but there's no "pre-owned fee" - report

You'll have to pay a fee to unlock the content for another user

004012d ago

"You won't, however, be able to share a single copy of a game with your friends."

No buy

completely stupid of MS.

Abash4012d ago

It's infuriating when companies want to screw over consumers just because they think they can. "Yeah they won't like it but they'll deal with it" is what they think, but I wont support a console that does this

FriedGoat4012d ago

Common guys, lets not get so angry about this yeah? Think of all that TV you can watch.

004012d ago

I was wrong but hopefully this bites them in the ass hard.

darthv724012d ago

is tied to your xbox account. how is that any different than what we have now? If you go to a friends house with your game, you can recover your gamertag and then play on that other system. you can also download any game or dlc you have tied to your account to that other system.

so with xbox one, it sounds like the same thing in regards to being able to access and play games based on your account. you just cant leave the game with your friend and let them continue to play.

The game becomes unplayable unless they continue to sign in as you??? And you could probably see if they are doing that like how the 360 tells you if you were signed in on another console previously.

Used games may suffer but if you are buying 'newer' used games from gamestop...you have been suffering already. their pricing sucks as its roughly only $5 difference between new and used.

So what would be the used fee from MS? If its $5 then you are better off buying new in the first place. Unless of course you only paid $20 or $30 for the used game, then that $5 (for example) fee isnt so bad when the new price is upwards of $50.

Root4012d ago

Shows you how much of a big head Microsoft have got

jetlian4012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

Well Thanks MS you saved me money!! The whole used games, and mandatory always on kinect equals no buy

ps4 only!! Actually the only way I would consider XB1 is if shenmue 3 was coming for it

And here's the biggest question: HOW MUCH will this fee be? I'm betting it will be at least 80% of retail, because otherwise friends can just pass a disc around, pay a much-less-than-retail fee, and install the game to their Xbox One and then keep passing the disc along.

This feature will possibly kill retail sales (by encouraging groups to buy one copy and pass it around) and definitely kill used game sales.

And you think Gamestop is gonna give you a premium spot in their stores like they did with the 360, Microsoft? Keep dreaming.

@ yugovega

Sorry, but Sony can't pay to advertise on Xbox Live. Advertisement isn't some-end all superpower that gets you whatever you want.

And if Microsoft aims to kill used games, you can bet that the higher-ups at Gamestop will not give the system very much shelf space. The Gamestop business model is sell console/game at almost no profit > buy used console/game for pennies > resell console/game for a huge profit margin.

If Xbox One is going to interfere with their business model, they won't give much support to it.

yugovega4012d ago

gaming companies pay for those spots inside gamestop. so if Microsoft wants the best space they can just buy it. and everyone know gamestop employees will push this for halo. as much as gamers hate it this system will sell.

HiddenMission4012d ago

So there is so much more here.

1. If you lend your buddy a game they have to pay a fee.

2. By paying that fee your friend can play the game because it's installed on their hard drive.

3. If the game is sold everyone who paid the fee will lose access.

Conclusion if the fee isn't cheap then not only has MS made a failed attempt at killing used games they will have failed at keeping customers happy. Think of it this way say the fee is $20, you lose touch with said friend. They sell the game, you turn on your console to play it and poof it's gone...and money down the drain right into MS's pocket.

This is a dirty tactic by MS to rape funds from consumers.

yugovega4012d ago

it's the way gamestop is run. every company pays for their spot in the store. or else you wouldn't have demo systems on the walls where they could have more merchandise and their wouldn't have new game spots on the wall. Nintendo doesn't sell at gs but yet thy have plenty of space because Nintendo pays for it. it's the way they company is ran. basically these companys rent out the spaces.

shadowraiden4012d ago

why should it matter.
why do console gamers still get all in a fuss over something that PC gamers are fine with for a long time.

theirs always bargain bins for games a couple of months old and good riddens their trying to get rid of the used market its hurt gaming more then people think it does.

004012d ago

the gaming industry makes billions of dollars each year, It makes more money then both the music industry and movie industry. if it's in trouble I want to know where the fuck is all that money going?

ooh wait it's going to all the greedy publishers who want the maximum amount of money with absolutely Zero effort made.

_-EDMIX-_4012d ago

Why should a company get paid twice for a game bought once? Is it worth $60 or is it?

Spare me with the "used game markets make this and that" How is that hurting any publisher in gaming?

The game needs TO BE BOUGHT ONCE TO BE CONSIDERED USED, THE MORE USED GAMES, THE MORE NEW ONES WHERE BOUGHT! Its as if they keep making it sound like someone is stealing from them. Never mind that Assassin's Creed 1 a NEW IP sold 6 million, never mind that LA Noire A NEW IP sold 5 million, its as if no matter how much gaming does well "oh look, used games is making more money"

Cue violin theme! Da FUQ? The used car market is BOOMING, strange...when did Ford, or Nissan, etc go out of business?

Second hand goods are no companies business. They are payed for there goods ONCE, why should one pay a company twice for a single game? Why does EA or MS care that I gave my little brother a copy of Left 4 Dead 2 after I was done with it?

Oh so he should pay EA for a Game I JUST BOUGHT...AGAIN? 1 disk, price of 2? Oh really? LOL!

Please, I beg you to tell this to a person thats buying a used car and see if the Violin tune kicks in. Spare me.

It blocks used games, makes you pay a fee (from what I understand) to get them working on other accounts or systems. Even if they don't.....THATS WORSE! So they don't let you do a damn thing with the disk? Its just trash now? WOW!

T24012d ago

Edmix - great comment, bubble up for sure for that. Exactly what I have been saying all along. What does it hurt? Well nothing if the developer wants to sell way LESS games. Right now I have an arrangement with a friend, he buys and xbox game, then I buy one, and then we switch. No way in hell am I going to pay a fee to borrow a game. Would you borrow a movie from a friend and pay the studio again? If all consoles did this, I would simply buy less games overall. And I would certainly skip every game rated less than 9/10 (for an example)... No way in hell I am paying twice for a used game. say goodbye to the shit developers, or better yet, say hello to ps4

Double_O_Revan4012d ago

then maybe PC gamers need to wake up and realize they're getting Boned too. Just because they're 'ok' with it, doesn't make it Ok.

I bought it, it's mine, and I'll do whatever the hell I like with it.

aceitman4012d ago

so my question is , is that y ea dropped the online pass thing because they know ms is going to make us pay to play used games , is that y they are in a new partnership.dam those snakes

GameCents4012d ago

This and always online were my deal breakers.
Bright side, they're saving me money because that's one less console I won't have to wonder about buying.

I won't be buying the Xbox One, but I won't be trolling it or those that want it either. I hope the same applies to the SONY trolls.

gamertk4214012d ago

Nope, I plan to hate Sony hard, especially with this lot on n4g.

BlmThug4012d ago

PS4 is a confirmed day one purchase for me, with today being the confirmation. Only reason I would ever buy the Xbox One is for Forza 5, and that's because I am a massive racing fan

3-4-54012d ago

Instead of going to gamestop, you just sell your copy digitally via the code to somebody else and they then own the code and its removed from your Xbox One.

They are trying to get people to trade used games using their Xbox One rather than have to drive to gamestop to do that.

I wonder if they will allow users to choose their sale price or if it's set ? Also does it change and diminish in value over time ?

Excalibur4012d ago

I'm not paying anyone a fee to play a used game, no sale.

MasterCornholio4012d ago

I was hoping that this rumor would be false and the mandatory kinect one as well.

But sadly they are not. Hopefully Microsoft doesnt set a trend in the industry because that would be horrible.

shadowraiden4012d ago

set a trend that for PC has been implemented for years.

used games hurt gaming why shouldnt companies expect to get the money for games they developed and not shops that rip off customers who trade in games for others.

C-Thunder4012d ago

Used games do not hurt gaming. Every used game still has dlc to buy that goes to developers. It also allows people to try games they wouldn't normally due to low cost and the ability to sell back games. Think we'd have Dark Souls, let alone Dark Souls 2 without the used game market? Doubtful.

T24012d ago

@shadowraiden - you should work for car companies, convince them to add a licence fee to every car. Or how about movie companies, every blu-ray has a pay to play fee. How about clothing? perhaps you would like to charge poor people to buy used clothing as well? Maybe you should buy 2 xbox1 and pay twice to play the game you bought LOL.

Root4012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

So thats why they really got rid of online passes.....and we were all praising them.

Knew they were doing it for a better reason

EDIT:

You know this is probably why they've taken Microsofts side all of a sudden since this gen they've usualy sided with Sony.

Pintheshadows4012d ago

I said when that story came out that it was foreboding news and would bring something far worse. Well, here you have it. Never trust EA. Ever.

coolmast3r4012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

MS is greedy. They've just crossed the line.

shadowraiden4012d ago

same line that costs game companies millions.

blame companies like gamestop which have made millions from ripping off customers with trade value and then reselling.
