XSEED: Localizing Senran Kagura a 'scary proposition'

Yesterday, Pandora's Tower publisher XSEED Games announced that it had acquired Atlus Online from Index Digital Media, integrating both companies under the common banner of Marvelous USA. Siliconera reached out to XSEED boss Ken Berry following the reveal to inquire if the move might lead to more Marvelous titles coming overseas.

“We are definitely interested in pushing the ‘Marvelous’ brand as much as possible," Berry said. But whether that interest will coalesce into a western release for Tamsoft's Senran Kagura series sounds dubious.

“It is something that we continue to look into because we know the demand is there as lots of fans have asked us about it,” Berry shared. “But it’s just such a scary proposition due to the subject matter and difference in attitudes between Japanese culture and the more conservative culture here in the U.S.”

There's one glimmer of hope though. Despite saying a physical release has "the potential for disaster," Berry entertained the possibilit...

Ugh, this kinda stuff is why I hate living in America at times... It's a game, there shouldn't BE any question as to how it conflicts with a certain culture. It's fictional, who the hell cares? Idiots that have nothing better to do than complain...

It's not just for this game, a lot of games over in Japan in general that we miss out on because of stuff like this.

From article: "There's one glimmer of hope though. Despite saying a physical release has "the potential for disaster," Berry entertained the possibility of a downloadable release."

Seriously hope they go through with it...

When these kinda games come out I normally buy them if I got the spare cash not because I like em but because I want to support them.

As mentioned above so many games from Japan are never released here because of stupid culture stuff that just flat out should not be such a big deal here. It's sad because every now and then comes a game in Japan that is genuinely good and it doesn't get released here because of being to racy or conflicting with culture or what have you. And honestly it's just not games from Japan. Countless other big games have never been released here or had to be altered to be released here. Indigo Prophecy springs to mind.

Japanese games - Why are they a rarity in Europe?

A lot of people who own a console or PC can´t get the thoughts of Japanese games out of their heads. And who can blame them? As we miss out on a lot of games. And Especially those of lewd nature. So these are my (Norman, TGG) thoughts on the matter.

Simon_the_sorcerer2823d ago

Well, as for the West...Both "Criminal Girls 2" and "Valkyrie Drive" got banned in Germany and Australia...

TGG_overlord2823d ago

I feel really sorry for the gamers that live in Australia and Germany :S

Littil_Devil2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

It´s not much better in South Korea either, as the whole country has gone full SJW mode.

Simon_the_sorcerer2823d ago

Yes...But I´m somewhat worried that this SJW cancer will spread all over the Western civilization. In other words, that the West will become like Germany -_-

Littil_Devil2823d ago

Now that I think about it, it would be really interesting to know how much German and Australian gamers spend on game imports? Furthermore, how many games they import per year? Quite a lot I bet.

TGG_overlord2823d ago

Hmm, good question. That might actually be worth looking into.

Darkwatchman2823d ago

Isn't the upcoming MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death also banned in Australia

TGG_overlord2823d ago

I think that´s correct, as "Criminal Girls 2" and "Valkyrie Drive" won´t be released there.

Littil_Devil2823d ago

That would be correct, and that´s also why a lot of games in the West gets either banned or censored on release.

Simon_the_sorcerer2823d ago

Some Australian friends of mine have to import games via New Zealand most of the time to avoid crap like that...

TGG_overlord2823d ago

I think Germany is the worst country in the whole world when it comes to censorship in video games. Hell, they even ban tons of games as well :S

Littil_Devil2823d ago

Didn´t a lot of Australian Gamers go over to New Zealand just so that they could buy GTA5?

"Yup. Country SJW rules"

No wonder why more and more people are buying games from Japan instead...
