GiantBomb- Dead Island Riptide Review

GB:The first Dead Island was long on good ideas but short on skillful execution, and while there's still a truly great game lurking in there somewhere, Riptide is not it. It's a shame Techland didn't take this opportunity to take a step back and figure out how to properly evolve this formula before iterating on the franchise again. Maybe that truly improved Dead Island will still come along someday, but in the meantime, Riptide feels like a game that didn't really need to be made.

Was anyone really expecting a good game after that mess they called dead island?

coolbeans4039d ago

It seems like we're prone to let our expectations for the series run wild thanks to the trailers.

That CGI trailer for the game made me buy it and im still ashamed that they tricked me. Meanwhile i havent finished the game game on pc, and have just been punching zombies with ken fist of the north star mod(best thing about the game)

I never played the first so I was hoping this would be like a definitive version of the game with more features and improved gameplay...oh well.

Funny, I remember saying the same thing about L4D2 and that game was loved (I even heard tales of some folks marrying the game).

You know, more of the same.

But Dead Island does it and it gets raked over the coals.

Hmmm?

I think a key difference between those two was L4D wasn't "short on skillful execution," like this reviewer says DI was.

The real tragedy here is Techland worked on this for 1 1/2 years and never addressed any of the first games shortcomings, they just add some things that could have been dlc or an expansion.

Capcom has done it right with Dragons Dogma. They fixed many of the originals problems then added a whole new area with all new enemies, weapons, etc. and it only took them a year.

WTH Techland, this reeks of cash grab. No buy for me and I got the first one.
