Batman: Arkham Origins – Taking the Series in the Wrong Direction

'As you’ve no doubt heard by now, a new Batman game in the Arkham series is coming to current generation consoles courtesy of Warner Bros. Montreal. Rather than moving forward, the new team has decided to go for a prequel, a common direction choice this year, showing off Batman’s younger and less experienced side. While Warner Bros. Montreal’s Christmas Eve beatdown has potential, I can’t help but feel that the game is headed in the wrong direction.' - JPS

"But I can’t help but feel that Rocksteady’s loyal fans have been pushed to the sidelines. The community constantly dug for new Easter eggs and hints following Arkham City’s release. What came out of all the hard work was a handful of titillating discoveries and in-depth theories. Arkham Origins isn’t going to confirm or deny our predictions and explanations"

True....however I think it's been made not only as a filler game to squeeze some more money out of people while they wait for Rocksteadys new game but to close the "Arkham Trilogy". There wasn't really anything else Rocksteady could of done with Arkham unless they made it that all of Gotham was taking over but I don't see that happening. Hopefully with a new trilogy "Gotham City" they can push the open world themes of their Batman games and expand on what we've seen and want from the franchise...vehicles being one.

I'm scared though that Warner Bros are going to get greedy, if Origins gets amazing sales they'll want more and more Batman games which will make Rocksteadys new releases seem dull because we've been over exposed to the franchise.

I do want to see the Joker come back at the end of Rocksteadys next game...something dosen't feel right. In comics no one is dead forever.

maxcon4032d ago

Didn't Rocksteady already say that they are not making another Batman?

sarshelyam4032d ago

I'm of the mindset that this release truly does close the "Arkham" trilogy, while Rocksteady is devoting all of their time to a next-gen release. We've seen what they can do with this generation, any release would ultimately be compared to its previous iterations and, likely condemned for not pushing forward. WB Games can get away with this by releasing a prequel on current gen platforms while still maintaining interest in the brand until Rocksteady is ready to reveal their project/s.

stragomccloud4032d ago

It's kind of weird that it's only coming to one next gen console. PS4's PC based architecture should make porting the PC version a breeze.

Jek_Porkins4032d ago

Do you really want a port of what is basically a current generation game? You can just get it for a console you have now, also the game releases October 25th, which is probably a month before the next Xbox or PlayStation even release.

admiralvic4032d ago

You would have a point if I could play PS3 games on the PS4...

stragomccloud4032d ago (Edited 4032d ago )

Doesn't really matter. Port is better than no port. I'm probably going to get the Wii U version since the dev has experience with it and should be ground up, therefore look more like the PC version; however, a PS4 port should still be in the works. It's really not a stretch to make it work. It also helps devs get accustomed to new hardware.

That said, if given enough time for development. Both the PS4 and Wii U versions could support the PC versions high res textures and directX 11 features. I say features because technically neither Wii U nor PS4 support directx 11(It's a Microsoft thing, hence the name directXbox).

In the end, who cares if a new console gets late ports? It happens all the time. I think early adopters wouldn't mind waiting a month for some games they can play on their new hardware.

Bigkurz854032d ago

Wow I didn't know anyone actually had a Wii u

Rock Steady should really do a Batman Beyond game with Bruce guiding him in Neo Gotham & Terrys friend max doing Bat suit upgrades.

The best Batman Arkham game still isn’t on PS5, and that’s a problem

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is almost here, but I can't revisit the best Arkhamverse game on PS5 without sacrificing quality.

Not a fan of Orgins. Blame it on the absence of Conroy & Hamill. Blame it on the lack of atmosphere compared to Asylm. Hell blame it the devs thst dicked over Wii U owners like me that purchased the game only for support be dropped as a thank you to me. It's better than Knight but that's not saying much. I don't care for that entry either.

Rebel_Scum104d ago

tbh buying a game like that for WiiU should’ve been an obvious non-purchase when it existed on better hardware.

Cacabunga104d ago

Origins is amazing..
my favorite Batman is Batman and Robin on mega drive.. an HD REMASTER of that would still look glorious

ZeekQuattro104d ago

I got it launch. Kinda hard to go back. I'm supposed to know they were going to drop support months after the fact. 🤣

Exvalos104d ago

You sound like a salty fanboy, that it didn't come to your precious plastic of choice. It's not the developers fault Nintendo continues making underpowered hardware. It's our fault because we keep buying it. Yes I say (we) I'm part of the problem as well.

ZeekQuattro104d ago

I have a PS3 and a Wii U. How was I a salty fanboy? I bought the game on the system I wanted it for.

Rebel_Scum104d ago

Nah my comment has nothing to do with whether you’d know or not that they’d drop support.

Buying any AAA game of that era for a WiiU you should’ve known you’d be sacrificing graphics and load times.

LucasRuinedChildhood105d ago

It's solid but Origins is definitely not the best Arkham game.

LoveSpuds104d ago

Smacks of hyperbole to me, talk about clutching at straws to create some drama around PS5!!

Titles like these are designed to get you to come in, go to their comment section and tell them how they're so wrong so they can boost their numbers.

Phoenix76104d ago

Even though its not the best arkham game in the series, its still an enjoyable game in its own right. What it do really well at though, was the crime investigations scenes. Which imo, were the best of the franchise.

goldwyncq104d ago

I don’t know about best game but it definitely has the best story and boss fights.

boing1104d ago

Never played it and recently I've finally tried it via cloud on psn. It's not the best for sure, but it ain't bad either.

Batman: Arkham Origins - Open World Busy Work that Doesn't Hold Up 10 Years Later

Batman: Arkham Origins launched 10 years ago today, and sadly doesn't stand the test of time as well as its predecessors.

Petebloodyonion185d ago

I fail to grasp why this title is worse compared to Arkham City (according to the article) as the author didn't provide any argument to explain why aside from that it felt the bigger map compared to Arkham Asylum made the experience less tight.
More importantly, the author seems like he never played Arkham City since he described the game as linear (alongside Asylum).

The Unjustly Forgotten Batman: Arkham Origins Deserves A Resurgence

Despite certain flaws, Batman: Arkham Origins is a splendid entry in the legendary Arkham series and deserves better than being forsaken.

lellkay298d ago (Edited 298d ago )

It's the worst of the three in my opinion, but still really enjoyable. Definitely underated and gets far more crap that it deserves.

Should be included with the other Arkham games in the bundle.

Demetrius298d ago

I'm honestly enjoying it alot, my first time playing since I just decided to get a Xbox 360 slim for 65$, I cop some other gems too tho, I went into Arkham origins not expecting better than Arkham city but it does deliver plus the guy who voices batman did a good job aiming for the young Bruce impression
