Midway Q4 Losses Rise Nearly $28 Million

Publisher and developer Midway has released the results of its holiday quarter and full year, showing Q4 sales falling to $77.6 million, and losses rising considerably from $2 million in 2006 to $29.7 million, with execs saying the company has "overcome many of [its] technology hurdles" for a "smoother" 2008.

The company did trumpet the achievement of its Epic co-release of Unreal Tournament 3 for PC and PlayStation 3, which it notes has shipped over a million copies worldwide, and took home a number of awards, as did its The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.

In all FPS you need split screen 4 player.. in Unreal console gaming its unheard of

Mattearl5896d ago

well.. hopefully 2008 will be more beneficial to them... UT3 is awesome by the way!

Most of that money was lost in Stranglehold. That game was a big let down. I was really hyped about till I played the demo, then I just forgot about it completely.

I did buy the PS3 collector's edition when it dropped to $30 on Amazon.

and Blacksite: Area 51. Blacksite was a real stinker. UT3 was awesome!

They shouldn't have made 3 different and expensive games with a single engine in 1 year. Hour of Victory, Stranglehold and Blacksite. Hour was a disaster, Blacksite was disappointing and Strangehold wasn't that big even though it cost more than $30 million. They should have spend much less money on them instead focused on their main franchise: Mortal Kombat. Put the 30 million into making it and with 2-3 years of developement it could have been a big hit like MK2.

Totally agree, Stranglehold was a huge bet which they lost. Keeping successful franchises alive like Mortal Kombat would be a good way to edge their bet.

By the way, does MK in MK_Red stand for Mortal Kombat?

MK_Red5896d ago (Edited 5896d ago )

True.

And yes, it does :)

I have Fallout's Vault Boy as my avy but MK is my real obsession :D

Yeah, but with the previousl released of MK games, they have each added severe disapointment onto the series overall: They should never have branched out into the adventure game field.

BUT, as much as I like mortal kombat, is there really a big enough fanbase to warrant a big budget sequel - I mean there are few beat'em ups that capture the masses: Vitual Fighter, Tekken and DOA and the up coming SF$4 seems to be gathering momentum. Most of those games are incredibly deep and rewarding once you have got the play mechanics right. MK, IMO just doesn't have that kind of depth. It is mindless fun, yes, but I don't think that mortal kombat is the franchise to ressurect Midway from finacial problems.

As The 17th Anniversary Approaches, Lord Of The Rings Online Details 2024 Plans

New raids, class updates, festivals and more are on the calendar.

Now this makes me feel old! I remember playing the beta while I worked at Gamestop. I honestly didn't even know this game was still online! A quick search showed that it's even F2P now, so I may check it out for nostalgia's sake.

I only subbed at launch for 1-2 months bc I was already caught up in WoW at the time. I love the LotR universe though and would like to see how it's being handled these days.

Middle-earth Enterprises sends cease-and-desist letter to LOTRO rogue server project

From MMORPG: "Some Lord of the Rings Online players may have been aware of an unofficial rogue server project that was set to release this month called Echoes of Angmar. Aiming to create a true vanilla version of LOTRO, trait lines and map-less Old Forest and all, the server ran the real risk of drawing legal ire down on its head because of the unlicensed use of a very much still-operating and still-in-development MMO.
