Adventure Gamer: Penumbra: Black Plague Review

Like a quick blast of Arctic air, Penumbra: Black Plague is both chilling and refreshing. It's a rather unconventional game; a horror-themed adventure that looks and controls almost exactly like a first person shooter. But don't let that put you off; although there is a dash of stealth gameplay, this is for the most part very much in the tradition of the adventure genre, even more than its predecessor.

The Good: Intense atmosphere; consistently clever physics-based puzzles and controls; chilling graphics and sound.

The Bad: Very short; the story is intriguing but sometimes disappoints; controls and stealth may put some players off.

Bottom Line: If you're in the market for a bite-sized chunk of the freshest horror adventure in years, play this game. It's unusual, smart, and above all, entertaining, if you can embrace the unconventional approach.

Well, it’s that time of the year again. Mentions of spooky ghosts and creatures of the night hang in the air, and unknown horrors lurk around every corner.

I know horror is subjective, but this is quite a .... strange selection of titles here. It seems a bit unfair to limit it to just 5 games.

0ne of the scariest games i have played recently is without a doubt Resident Evil 6.

I was terrified that i had wasted £40 on a crap game.

Spookily i waas correct.

snipab8t3852d ago

You think that's bad? Imagine my fear when I realized I paid $60 for Resident Evil Raccoon City :0

AnotherProGamer3852d ago

Slender wasn't really that scary

snipab8t3852d ago

It is when you're drunk at like 3am.

Plagasx3852d ago

Where the F*** is the Resident Evil Remake?

dillhole3852d ago

Slender is scary for the first few minutes. Then you see the guy and it kinda kills it. It's hard to be realistically scared in a game where you get to respawn each time you die. The reason films successfully achieve horror is that you connect with the characters and once they're dead, they're dead.

Yeah, but films aren't as scary as games. Games can still scare me. No movie even sort of scares me.

Letros4584d ago

Stalker is missing, typical bad list.

IrishAssa4584d ago

Yeah Stalker has some scary parts that far surpass almost every game on the list too

arnyftw4584d ago

Frightening? Lol left 4 dead 2 isnt frightening, its boring, I preferred l4d1

iNcRiMiNaTi4584d ago

Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 5? Really?
Where's Fatal Frame or Siren? Or since they have Doom 3 take it back to Silent Hill or something.
