Things I Don't Want To See Next Generation

Torrence Davis of STFUandPlay writes, "The next generation of console games is upon us. This year Microsoft and Sony will bless us with new hardware, faster networks and a more streamlined Eco system. After the many pains of this 7th generation of consoles, I’m hoping that they’ve learned from their mistakes and are planning on treating us like gamers and not fast food addicts. I’ve come up with a list of things I don’t want to see in generation 8. Rest assured, if I feel like I’m getting screwed over in generation 8, I’ll sell my consoles and stick to mobile and PC gaming. The hardware faults were there because Microsoft and Sony tried to stuff hot hardware into a small case. They needed to make the case small for the hardware to satisfy their customers because a lot of the customers want small and fancy. There wasnt enough room for the fans to move air to cool the hot hardware. Another reason for some of the failures was some people were putting the consoles into spaces where there wasnt enough cool air getting to the console.

Things I don't want to see

1. Faulty hardware.
2. Online fees just to access multiplater.
3. Consoles with no hard drives.
4. Games running below 30fps.
5. Games below native 1080p.
6. Prices higher than $60.
7. Consoles with no backwards compatibility.
8. Prices higher than $500
9. Lack of new ip's.
10. No 3rd party exclusive deals unless they are co-publishing the game.

zebramocha4125d ago (Edited 4125d ago )

@mike 1 is impossible because different manufacturing processes or components may lead to faulty products,2 are you talking about online pass?that's there to recoup money from second hand sales, though they should have trial thing for mp after the games release,4,5devs choice,6 I assuming but if games are not flying of the shelves at $60,than a increase would not help,7 companies choice,8,hard to say as the transition from this gen to next should be easy unlike last gen,9,devs/ people choice to support or make it happen,10 don't mind if it's a new ip and the content shouldn't effect the game over all.

guitarded774125d ago (Edited 4125d ago )

Hardware faults were too high in the beginning of this gen, but the author wants below 1%... I don't know if that can happen on such a complex machine as a console. 6-7 years ago when the 360 and PS3 came out, we were very early into the current model of processor architecture (multi-core). Processors produce heat... the more switches a processor has, the more heat produced... it's just the way it works. The 360 had a fatal flaw in design, and had to redesign the chipset to fix the problem with heating. The first generation PS3 had a huge case and a huge fan, so I don't think it was a matter of enough room or fans. It also had a lower failure rate, and produced less heat... I'm guessing due to the chip design.

Anyway, point is... the three biggest enemies of any electronic device are dust, liquid and heat. Heat is the only one engineers have a direct influence on. Modern chip architecture is designed with multi cores, and it allows engineers to design a machine from getting too hot. I don't think we'll see the same problems that plagued the beginning of last gen because engineers are very knowledgeable on modern design and architecture.

JoySticksFTW4125d ago

Tor's list was good; I think MikeMyers nailed it.

I would add...

- crappy ports and
- Japanese devs "westernizing" their games
- good devs closing & losing their jobs
- devs afraid to take chances because of above, so clone popular games / game mechanics (i.e. COD clones)

morkendo234125d ago

10 games i dont want to see next gen.

1.mass effect
2.resident evil
3.metal gear rising
4.walking dead

Thats only half of it though. Another big problem was the soldering they both did on the CPU and GPU. For whatever reason, this generation they chose lead free soldering on those chips. Lead free soldering is just not durable enough to withstand constant heating and cooling. And this was the main culprit for the PS3's YLOD and the 360's RROD issues. The new consoles need lead soldering, not lead free because lead soldering is much more durable.

Kyosuke_Sanada4126d ago (Edited 4126d ago )

I agree with this list completely. I would also like to add no day one patches and no DLC for characters and skins unless it is an expansion that is worthy to enough to played separately. Fighting games should never have DLC only unlockables and patches for balancing.......

animegamingnerd4125d ago

chances are very unlikely but the only thing i don't want to see next gen is all of the problems DLC has caused

bozebo4125d ago

Hardware faults is the only one on the list that isn't guaranteed to happen.

gamedebater4125d ago

I want to see More LUSH enviorments. Not this static BS that looks like HD ps2 games.

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai1d 3h ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga18h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

ravens5222h ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_17h ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM17h ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka1h ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_17h ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 1h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos15h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb3314h ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC5h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

ChasterMies19h ago

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear2113h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

jwillj2k41d 10h ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot1d 9h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC5h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon6158614h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k49h ago(Edited 9h ago)

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k49h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody1d 9h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead23h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage16h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast1d 9h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19791d 8h ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel1d ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn197913h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage16h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

Jin_Sakai3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

“Bond adds that they will start on the web”

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead3d ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Good luck with this even it might not succeed.
