Top 5 “Black Sheep” Games

BT writes: In the current generation of gaming, there are more than a few long-running series to be found across the different consoles. Of course, considering how companies often don’t like to give up on a basic formula that works and sells, it’s an understandable aspect of any medium. However, despite the similarities between almost all the games in any given series, circumstances can sometimes be very different. Occasionally, a series will take a sharp turn from the norm and produce a game quite different from the standard format. These “black sheep” of the series are often seen as inferior due to those major differences, but they can often be just as good as the standard for the series. So, to give credit to these much maligned games, I’m listing my top “black sheep” games here. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Majoras Mask is very much on par with OoT IMO, in fact I sometimes find myself feeling that it's the better of the two, either way the darker tone, the foreboding apocalypse, the fleshed out characters, the great soundtrack, and all the great masks to collect, all of it made Majoras mask one of the best games I have ever played.

Majoras Mask as awesome. This game really needs a reboot. So many haven't played it. So odd as it's one of the best Zelda's ever.

@zero. A 3DS port would be fine. It's not that the game needs a remake, just it didn't get the recognition it deserved. It came out and just kind of fell off the map.

I really hope it gets a 3DS makeover like OoT at the very least.

But a console reboot of Majoras mask would be amazing!

@NukaCola

Yeah, I completely agree with you there and a 3DS port would be ideal, I don't find many people who have played it and didn't thoroughly enjoy it though.

yeah that's a good one

I completely agree with Deadlocked. I loved Deadlocked.

I would have to also add the original Maniac Mansion. It seems that everyone always talks about Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island, but Maniac Mansion doesn't get any love. It was an amazing game.

probably the reason I havent played majoras mask is my friend told me theres no Gannon, Zelda, Triforce, or hyrule. The only thing connecting OOT to Majoras mask is link. But, ppl claim Majoras mask is one of the best zeldas so it must have amazing gameplay.

Xof4127d ago

...Those are pretty lame reasons for not playing it.

Do people think it has amazing gameplay? Yes. It has the -best- implementation of time-manipulation mechanics I've ever seen in a game. But it also has some fantastic ambiance, a compelling story with the most mature theme Zelda (or any other Nintendo franchise) has seen, and a -lot- of subtlety and depth.

Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game. :O
Despite the lack of Ganon, Zelda, Hyrule, etc it has one of the best and most character-driven plots in any Zelda game, imo. The game is darker and more mature than OoT, and the constant eerie feeling of dread and foreboding is just amazing. I only wish the next Zelda game was more like MM, but on a grander scale.

I completely agree! When I 1st saw TP I thought great! a darker, more eerie Zelda game, may be it's gonna like Majoras Mask... sadly TP was a bit of a let down.

I Would love to see a Zelda game try to match Majoras mask in darker tone and all the other aspects you mentioned.

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

Back when video rental was a thing, I rented out Majoria's Mask, I never finished it though. I did buy the 3DS version before the eshop shutdown, so maybe one day I'll finally play through the whole thing, it's amazing how well these games hold up though. I briefly played Ocarina of Time for a while and it was really fun.

23 Years Ago, Nintendo Unleashed the Riskiest Zelda Sequel Ever

'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask' is a testament to Nintendo's game development skills.

This game is so trippy when one considers Link is dead, and tripping in limbo or something.

ill never forget my first experiences with MM, and its why its my favorite zelda title

luckytrouble363d ago

Majora's Mask, a major oddity in the series as the game is shaped around the story rather than the story being shaped around the game as Nintendo usually does. It wants you to be invested in saving the world and all the unique individuals in it. The game was made so fast too, this is really its saving grace. Certain aspects of the original game technically are a bit rough (poor Z targeting getting made into jank), and the boss fights just generally aren't good in either the original or the remake. The dungeons themselves are generally actually pretty interesting, but the true draw is everything that happens outside of them ultimately.

AuraAbjure341d ago

Such a gnarly game! The gameplay is so varied because Link can transform into totally different characters. Swimming around as a Zora was so chiilll
